HP TopTools for Notebooks Agent software INTRODUCTION Welcome to HP TopTools for Notebooks Agent, Hewlett-Packard's client manageability software based on the Desktop Management Interface (DMI). The DMI standard -- defined by the Desktop Management Task Force (DMTF) committee of which Hewlett-Packard was cofounder -- has now been adopted by all leading manufacturers of personal computer systems. Hewlett-Packard has developed a number of extensions to DMI to allow the enhanced features of Hewlett-Packard personal computers to be managed with DMI. These extensions include: - Administrator and user passwords. - Tattooing: a string of characters that uniquely identifies each computer. - The ability to enable or disable flexible disk drives. - Keyboard, mouse, power-on, and reset buttons. - Remote booting from a server (models with integrated LAN connection). - Remote upgrades of system BIOS and drivers - Remote installation of diagnostics software packages - Hardware monitoring WHAT'S NEW IN RELEASE 4.1 - User interface look and feel similar to that of the web-based TopTools for Desktops Device Manager - A new Support tool has been introduced, which provides hyperlinks to a web page containing support information for your PC. By default, this will point to Hewlett-Packard's Support web (requires Internet access). The Support URL (web address) can be customized, for instance on multiple PCs simultaneously by using the TopTools for Desktops Device Manager. - Support of DVD-ROMs. However, these drives will be reported as CD-ROM drives. - The following functions are available from the TopTools Desktops management console: - Remote driver updates on some PC models supporting TopTools 4.1 Agent - PC Year 2000 compliance report REQUIREMENTS This HP TopTools client software package can be used with many recent Hewlett-Packard personal computers. Please consult the support matrices on the Web under http://www.hp.com/go/manageability for details. - 6 Mb free disk space on your PC (12 Mb is needed temporarily during the installation process). - 800*600, 256 color display or better. - Microsoft Windows NT(R) 4 SP3 or higher, 95 OSR 2.1 / build 1214 or higher, or 98. INSTALLATION Proceed as follows: - Start Windows, if it is not already running. - If the TopTools software has been pre-loaded on your disk: - Open the "HP TopTools for Notebooks" program group. - Double-click on the SETUP program icon. - If the software has been downloaded from the Web, or is on a CD, run the executable file provided and follow the instructions given - If distributed in any other form, run the program SETUP.EXE By default, TopTools is installed under C:\DMI. There are two optional software packages that you may choose to install. The installation program will ask whether they should be installed: - HP SMS MIF generator - Crash Monitor (if chosen, by default it is installed under C:\Program Files\McAfee\Crash Monitor) Notes: - Installation will launch software agents used to make the PC manageable remotely. For remote management, you will need either a TCP/IP or a IPX network stack with the RPC service. - SMART hard disk measurements are initialized when installing TopTools Agent on a PC. CONTENTS OF THIS PACKAGE The HP TopTools for Notebooks Agent software and associated documentation is supplied either pre-loaded on your computer's hard disk drive, on a CD, or from the HP Web site. The contents of the package are the same in all cases, although the packaging may vary slightly. Since the information accessed by DMI is specific to each computer, you must install it on each managed PC separately. Note: You must run the installation program even if the HP TopTools client software has been pre-loaded on your computer, otherwise the software will not work correctly. The following software is supplied: - Management Information Format (MIF) files. These files contain information about the elements of the computer that can be controlled using DMI facilities. The MIF files are initialized during installation. - A component code, which instruments DMI attributes. - A management application for the local PC, TopTools.exe. - Microsoft Windows-compatible DMI 2.0 Service Provider software, which controls access to the DMI interface. - SMS integration (optional) - Crash Monitor (optional) The following documentation is also provided: - This file, README.TXT. - A Windows online help file, TOPTOOLS.HLP - User's Guide for Crash Monitor (in C:\Program Files\McAfee\Crash Monitor\doc\manual\crashmon.pdf if Crash Monitor was installed in its default location) - SMS integration README file. LAN cards and video cards OEM:ed by HP may also have their own DMI instrumentation. This software may be either be incorporated into the corresponding driver, or available as a separate package from the HP support web site (see section "Obtaining Support" below). Either way, this DMI instrumentation needs to be installed separately on Desktops. RUNNING THE MANAGEMENT APPLICATION To run the local TopTools application: - Open the "HP TopTools for Notebooks" program group created during installation. - Double-click on the "HP TopTools" program icon or select the "HP TopTools" menu item. IMPORTANT NOTES - The installation program and the DMI Service Provider do not support the extended character set. Use only standard US characters -- do not use accented characters or symbols or the installation might not complete correctly. - Security Tool, Settings & Actions tab: Whenever "Floppy Disk Drive enabled", "Serial Port A Enabled", "Serial Port B Enabled", or "Parallel Port Enabled" are changed (checked or unchecked), you must restart the target PC to activate the changes. - When the DMI database file (SLDB.DMI) is created for the first time, do not shut down or reset your PC. This database file may be lost if your PC is not shut down correctly. - The Uninstall program may not remove all traces of TopTools Agent from your system. You may need to manually remove some items from your system (directories, temporary files). These are located under C:\DMI\WIN32 by default. - The Uninstall program running under Windows NT may sometimes appear to hang for around 5 minutes. It is trying to stop some of the services installed with the TopTools Agent. This operation is sometimes very slow. - To perform certain operations, such as restarting the PC, or updating the BIOS, you will need to enter the Administrator password of the PC first (this is one of the BIOS-level passwords, also known as DMI passwords, which can be maintained using either the BIOS Setup program or HP TopTools). - When changing the passwords, only use English language alphanumeric keyboard characters to maintain consistency with the system BIOS. - Update Tool: When updating the BIOS, the PC screen might: 1) go black with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner, or 2) show the Windows screen for several seconds. This is normal. The PC will restart automatically when the flash operation is completed. - If your OpenView Server fails to detect your OmniBook, import the registry file C:\DMI\Win32\Bin\CLIIP.REG by double-clicking the file in Windows Explorer. (\DMI is the default TopTools directory.) Then reboot to start CLIIP32.EXE and allow your OmniBook to be detected. SILENT INSTALLATION If you want to install the TopTools package on a client machine without user intervention, use the following procedure. Copy the uncompressed software files to the target PC. Use the file DMISETUP.INI to configure the mute setup. Edit that file and run installation. The file has 3 sections: - [SetupInstall] to set the installation parameters. - [Action] to describe the actions allowed during the mute setup. - [GeneralInfo] contains default values used by the batch installation process for some DMI attributes. * The Installation Section [SetupInstall] This section contains 3 items: - InteractiveInstall Possible values are 1 or 0. If set to 0, SETUP runs in batch mode (without user inputs). All files must be copied into a single directory. If Mute Setup is not used, parameters from section [Action] and section [GeneralInfo] will not be used. Example: InteractiveInstall=1 - InstallCrashMonitor Possible values are 1 or 0. Crash Monitor will be installed if InstallCrashMonitor=1 (default). Note 1: when installing Crash Monitor on Windows NT 4, a dialog box may appear on the target PC. This occurs if you are have an early revision of certain DLLs, e.g. MSVCIRT.DLL. It will not occur if you have installed, for instance, MS Office 97. Note 2: for Crash Monitor, the file PCMCRESP.INI may be modified to match your specificities. - InstallDir Installation directory (full path). Character string, maximum size 64 characters. Example: InstallDir=C:\DMI Implementation * The Action Section [Action] This section describes the actions allowed during SETUP. It contains 3 items: - Insert Possible values are 1 or 0. If set to 1, SETUP will overwrite the installation directory if it already exists. Example: Insert=0 - Update Possible values are 1 or 0. If set to 1, SETUP will destroy the obsolete version of DMI components if they are detected. Example: Update=0 - Reboot Possible values are 1 or 0. If set to 1, the computer will reboot at the end of the installation. Example: Reboot=0 * The General Information Section [GeneralInfo] This section contains default values used by the batch installation process for some DMI attributes. The values for all of these attributes, except PCSerialNumber, can be changed after the installation process. PCSerialNumber is automatically updated during installation if the system supports it. MonitorSerialNumber is automatically updated under Windows 95 if the monitor and the BIOS support DDC calls. - SystemUserPhone User's phone number. Character string, maximum size 64 characters. Example: SystemUserPhone="user telephone number" - SystemPhysicalLocation Short description of the location of your HP OmniBook PC. Character string, maximum size 64 characters. Example: SystemPhysicalLocation="where the system is" - PCSerialNumber PC serial number, written at the back of your HP OmniBook PC. Character string, maximum size 64 characters. Example: PCSerialNumber="serial number of the HP OmniBook PC" Remember: this field is not needed if the serial number can be obtained automatically. - PCAssetNumber If your company uses asset numbering, asset number of your HP PC. Character string, maximum size 64 characters. Example: PCAssetNumber="asset number of the system" - MonitorSerialNumber Monitor serial number written at the back of your monitor. Character string, maximum size 64 characters. Example: MonitorSerialNumber="serial number of the non DDC monitor" Note: this field is not needed if the monitor and the BIOS support DDC calls if running Windows 95. - MonitorAssetNumber If you company uses asset numbering, asset number of your external monitor. Character string, maximum size 64 characters. Example: MonitorAssetNumber="asset number of the monitor" MORE INFORMATION - OBTAINING SUPPORT If you require further assistance or information, please refer to the HP Support Web site at http://www.hp.com/go/vectrasupport for Vectras, http://www.hp.com/go/kayaksupport for Kayaks, or http://www.hp.com/omnibook/support for OmniBooks.
