The Desktop Management Interface for HP OmniBook NoteBook PCs
    =============================================================
    Welcome to Hewlett-Packard's enhanced implementation
of the Desktop Management Interface (DMI).

The DMI standard--defined by the Desktop Management
Task Force (DMTF) committee of which Hewlett-Packard
was a co-founder--has now been adopted by all leading
    manufacturers of desktop computer systems.

DMI is basically a set of rules on how to access
information about your personal computer. Using the
DMI interface, a local or remote application program
can check what hardware and software components are
installed on your computer, how well they are working,
    and whether any needs replacing.

Hewlett-Packard has developed a number of extensions
to DMI to allow the enhanced features of HP personal
computers to be managed with DMI. These extensions
    cover:

    - Administrator and user passwords.

    - Tattooing: a string of characters that uniquely
      identifies the computer.

    - The ability to enable or disable flexible disk drives.

    - Keyboard, mouse, power-on, and reset buttons.

    - Remote booting from a server using a boot ROM (with
      integrated LAN connection).

Note: This DMI software package can only be used with
your HP OmniBook NoteBook PC and some features may not
be available at this time such as:

    - Boot ROM support

    - BIOS Upgrades

    - Some Security features such as tattooing, administrator
      and user passwords.

    Contents of the DMI Package
    ---------------------------
The DMI software and associated documentation is
supplied either pre-installed on your computer's hard
disk drive, or on two flexible disks. If a Recovery CD
was supplied with your computer, the DMI package may
also appear on this CD-ROM. The contents of the package
is the same in all cases.

Since the information accessed by the DMI software is
specific to a particular computer, you must install it
    on each computer separately.

    The following software is supplied:

    - A Management Information Format (MIF) file. This file
contains information about everything on the computer
that can be controlled using DMI facilities, and is
      initialized during installation.

    - A component code, identifying the version of MIF file
to use for specific models of HP OmniBook NoteBook PCs.

    - A PC Management Application, TOPTOOLS.EXE, to demonstrate
the advantages of Hewlett-Packard's implementation of DMI.

    - Microsoft Windows(TM)-compatible DMTF Service Layer
software, which controls access to the DMI interface.

    - A Windows utility, SETUP.EXE, to install and initialize
      the DMI software.

Note: You must run SETUP.EXE even if the DMI software
has been pre-installed on your computer; the software
    will not work correctly otherwise.

The following documentation is also provided:

    - This file, README.TXT.

    - A Windows online help file describing Hewlett-Packard's
implementation of DMI (group and attribute definitions).
Since not all Hewlett-Packard enhanced features are
supported on all models, this document also describes any
      restrictions that apply.

Installing the DMI Package from Windows 95
    ------------------------------------------
    Proceed as follows:

    - Start Windows 95, if it is not already running.

    - If the DMI software has been pre-installed:
      * Open the "HP DMI" program group
      * Double-click on the SETUP program icon.

    - If the DMI software has been supplied on flexible disks:
      * Insert floppy disk #1
      * Select Run from the File menu of File Manager
      * Type A:SETUP.EXE and press Enter.

    - If the DMI software has been supplied on the Recovery CD:
      * Insert the Recovery CD in the CD-ROM drive
      * Select Run from the File menu of File Manager
      * On the Recovery CD, Browse \OMNIBOOK\DRIVERS\WIN95\DMI\DISK1
      * Double-click on the SETUP program icon.

    Running the PC Management Application
    -------------------------------------
For an introduction to the facilities provided by DMI:

      * Open the "HP DMI" program group created during
        installation
      * Double-click on the TOPTOOLS program icon.

    Important Notes
    ---------------
      * The Setup program and the DMI Service Layer do not
support the extended character set. Use only standard
US characters -- do not use accented characters or symbols.

      * ProtectTOOLS, Security tab/Multiset tab:
Whenever "Floppy Disk Drive enabled", "Serial Port A Enabled",
"Serial Port B Enabled", or "Parallel Port Enabled" are
changed (checked or unchecked), you must restart the target PC
        to activate these changes.

      * When the DMI database file (SLDB.DMI) is created for the
first time, do not shutdown or reset your PC in an improper
manner. This database file may be lost if your PC is not
        shutdown correctly.

      * The DMI Uninstall program does not remove all traces of the
DMI program from your system. You may need to manually remove
        some items from your system.

      For Windows 95 only:

      * The Setup program window must not be reduced to an
icon (minimized) during the installation procedure.

      * ConfigTOOLS, FlashTOOL tab:
During the flash operation the PC screen might either:
        1) be black with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner, or
        2) show the Windows screen for several seconds.
This is normal. The PC will restart automatically when the flash
        operation is completed.

    Tip
    ---
      For Windows 95 only:

      * To enable remote access from the Server using the TCP/IP
network protocol you should ensure that default
protocol is set to TCP/IP on the client PC.

To set the default protocol to TCP/IP, follow these steps:
        1. Open the Network control panel. (Click Start > Settings
           > Control Panel and then double-click on Network.)
        2. Click on the Configuration tab.
        3. In the network components list, double click
           on TCP/IP.
        4. In the TCP/IP Properties window, click on
           the Advanced tab.
        5. Ensure that there is a check in the "Set this
protocol to be the default protocol" box.

Uninstalling the DMI Package from Windows 95
    --------------------------------------------
    Proceed as follows:

    - Start Windows 95, if it is not already running.
      * Open the "HP DMI" program group
      * Double-click on the UNINSTALL DMI program icon
      * Reboot the PC

    Using the DMI Interface
    -----------------------
To develop application programs that use DMI, you need
to obtain the DMTF Software Development Kit (SDK),
    available from:

    Desktop Management Task Force
