HP OmniBook 5000
Installing MS Windows NT 3.51 Workstation

System Installation Requirements

1. HP OmniBook 5000
2. 16MB of RAM, preferrably 24-32MB
3. SCSI CD ROM drive & cable or access to a CD ROM drive via a
   network connection
4. HP OmniBook 5000 drivers for sound, video, & pcmcia
5. MS Windows NT Workstation ver. 3.51 (this application note
   assumes CD ROM version)
6. Floppy disk (to create recovery boot disk during install)

Note: For simplicity, MS Windows NT Workstation ver. 3.51 will be
referred to as Windows NT for the remainder of this document.

Preparation for installation of Windows NT:
HP OmniBook 5000 driver library
The following resources are available to the user to obtain the
HP OmniBook 5000 pcmcia, sound and video drivers for Windows NT:

1. HP OmniBook 5000 hard drive in the c:\omnibook\drivers\nt\sound,
\...\nt\video subdirectories. These files are available after
completing the selection of Windows 95 or Windows for Workgroups.
Note: The pcmcia.sys driver is not yet available on the harddrive.

2. External HP FTP site
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/mobile_computing/software

3. External HP web site
ftp://ftp.hp.com/html/omni600.html

4. External HP BBS
(208) 344-1691

5. America On-Line
Keyword: HP

6. CompuServe
Go hpomni

Note: The sound and video files should either be copied to separate
floppy diskettes or accessed from a directory on the harddrive.
By default the HP OmniBook 5000 provides a library of drivers
      in the c:\omnibook\drivers\nt subdirectories \sound, \video.
The pcmcia driver can be placed in a subdirectory on either the
sound or video floppy diskette. If the user chooses this file
can also be placed on the harddrive and copied from the hard drive
      to the appropriate subdirectory.

Steps to installing Windows NT
Installation using a distribution share (ie Network installation)
Windows NT utilizes a file called dosnet.inf and a choice of either
the winnt or winnt32 utilities to install this operating system from a
network share. The share is called a distribution share and essentially
contains all of the files found on the Windows NT CD ROM. IT organiz-
ations may choose to modify specific .inf files within the NT file
structure to determine what groups, icons and options are installed.

HP OmniBook 5000VL (ie no SCSI on board) owners will need to install
either from a network, use an HP OmniBook 5000 docking station or use
the Windows NT floppy disk set.

To find out more about this installation option please refer to the
MS Windows NT Resource Guide within the MS Windows NT Resource Kit.
Specifically, Chapter 3 "Customizing Windows NT Setup" for more information.

This installation option will require the same HP OmniBook 5000 driver
changes listed under the section "Installation using the Windows NT
CD ROM and 3 floppy disk set" listed below.

Installation using the Windows NT CD ROM and 3 floppy disk set
Preparation Checkpoint:

Check to insure the HP OmniBook 5000 specific driver sets are ready on
floppy to be used during this installation. The required drivers are
for pcmcia, sound and video. If these drivers are not ready on floppy
please refer to the previous section of this application note, titled
"Preparation for installation of Windows NT".

At this point in the installation it is assumed that either the hard
drive is blank and has been formatted for a FAT file system or contains
a resident operating system of MS Windows for Workgroups or MS Windows 95.

Note: It is recommended that the user stop at this point and make any
backup necessary of critical data. When making changes to the harddisk
either by changing the file system or Operating system, it is always
advisable to first backup the system to prevent data loss of any critical
files.

Begin installation:

1. Close down Windows (if applicable and turn off the computer).
2. Connect the SCSI CD ROM drive to the HP OmniBook 5000 and insert the
Windows NT CD ROM into the CD player and insert the disk titled
"Setup Boot disk" into drive a: Check to be sure the CD ROM player
is turned on as well and has power.
3. Connect the HP OmniBook 5000 AC adapter to the unit to insure no
   interruption of power during installation.
4. Using a pen, press the reset button on the HP Omnibook 5000 (recessed
area below the AC adapter) to reboot the computer.
5. The setup program will then prompt the user for Setup Disk #2, insert
   it and press Enter.

Begin installation(cont'd):

9. Setup begins a detection process to determine what type of SCSI drivers
need to be loaded. Depending on whether the SCSI device is detected or
not, the user should follow the applicable instructions on screen. The
default is pressing Enter because the SCSI device is recognized and the
   device drivers are loaded.
10.When prompted for type of installation (ie CD ROM or floppy) press
Enter to choose CD ROM installation.
11.Setup requires the user to choose between installing on one of the
following drive spaces. For this application note, the assumption is
either press Enter or D, depending on whether the user would like a
dual boot or an NT only drive.
   * To Install Windows NT on the highlighted partition or unpartitioned
     space, press Enter
   * To create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press C
   * To delete the highlighted partition, press D
12.Setup will ask the user whether they want to upgrade in the c:\windows
directory. Press Enter to accept or N to change the directory.
13. Setup requires the user to make a file system type selection of
   * Format the partition using the FAT file system
   * Format the partition using the NTFS file system
   * Convert the partition to NTFS
   * Leave the current file system intact (no changes). This is
highlighted and takes effect by pressing Enter.

Note: For a detailed discussion of FAT, HPFS and NTFS file systems, please
refer to the "MS Windows NT Resource Guide within the MS Windows NT
Resource Kit". Specifically Chapter 5 "Windows NT File Systems and
Advanced Disk Management".
