Installation Guide for the Windows for Workgroups ---------------------------------------- The Windows for Workgroups *.386 file supports all Adaptec PCI single port adapters. You may use any of the following drivers for Windows for Workgroups: DOS ODI DOS NDIS 2.0 Windows 32-bit *.386 file (NDIS 3.0) The OEMSETUP file located in the \WINDOWS subdirectory supports installation and configuration of any of these three drivers. For best results, use only one NIC per workstation. To Install and Configure the Windows for Workgroups Driver ---------------------------------------- Follow the instructions below to install the Windows for Workgroups driver for your Adaptec PCI adapter. 1. Go to the Main program group and double-click on the Windows Setup icon. From underneath the Options menu, select Change Network Settings. 2. From the Network Setup dialog box, click on the Drivers button. 3. Choose the Add Adapter button. 4. From the list of adapters provided, select Unlisted or Updated Network Adapter. Choose OK. 5. Select the drive where your Adaptec driver diskette is located and select the \WINDOWS subdirectory as the install path. Choose OK. 6. Select your Adaptec PCI adapter from the list of adapters provided, and then choose OK. Note that you can select either to use the NDIS 3.0 (32-bit) driver, or the DOS ODI or DOS NDIS driver from the driver installation pick list. NDIS 3.0 ------------------- If you want to use the NDIS 3.0 driver, you should choose the NDIS 3.0 selection from the driver installation pick list. NDIS 2.0 and DOS ODI ------------------- If you want to use the NDIS 2.0 or DOS ODI driver, you should select the NDIS 2.0 or ODI driver options from the driver installation pick list. After deciding upon your selection, choose OK. 7. After choosing OK, you can highlight your Adaptec adapter in the list of network drivers, and then choose setup, to edit the network adapter settings (see details on the NDIS 3.0 parameters below). For the non-NDIS 3.0 drivers, use this setup option to select between DOS ODI and DOS NDIS. The Driver Type option at the bottom of the Setup window allows you to choose between NDIS and ODI. 8. After making any driver setup changes, choose Close to go back to the previous window. Click OK again to exit from the network driver install window. At this point, any necessary drivers will be copied to your system from the Windows for Workgroups diskettes and your Adaptec diskette. 9. You will be prompted to reboot for your new driver to take effect. To Configure the DOS NDIS Driver ---------------------------------------- To complete installation of your DOS NDIS driver, you may need to edit your PROTOCOL.INI and CONFIG.SYS files using a text editor. Some products automatically add the appropriate lines to these files when the DOS NDIS driver is installed. When your Adaptec driver is installed, several lines are added to your configuration files. 1. In PROTOCOL.INI: [ADPT$EMPCI1] DRIVERNAME=EMPCI$ 2. In the protocol section of PROTOCOL.INI: BINDINGS=ADPT$EMPCI1 3. In CONFIG.SYS after the line which loads the protocol manager: DEVICE=C:\'path'\PROTMAN.DOS DEVICE=C:\'path'\EMPCI.DOS Where 'path' is an optional parameter indicating the location of the DOS NDIS driver. In Windows for Workgroups 3.11, the EMPCI.DOS driver loads from the SYSTEM.INI file, rather than the CONFIG.SYS. Customizing Adaptec PCI NDIS 3.0 Parameters ---------------------------------------- Your Adaptec adapter will run well using the default values for the parameters that follow. The NDIS 3.0 EMPCI.386 driver supports the parameters below. If you are using the NDIS 2.0 or DOS ODI driver with Windows for Workgroups, see the files DOSODI.TXT and NDIS.TXT in \README for parameter information. ---------------------------------------- Connection Type This parameter determines the type of cable to be used with the Adaptec adapter. Default: Defaultsense Range: As follows Defaultsense Autosenses line speed and cable type InitSense Detects the line speed (10 or 100 Mb/s) when the adapter initializes. ActiveSense Detects the line speed (10 or 100 Mb/s) when the adapter initializes and continues to check to see if the line speed has changed. 100 Mbps/Half Duplex Sets speed to 100 Mbps manually (10/100 models only) 100 Mbps/Full Duplex Sets speed to 100 Mbps manually with FDE activated (100 TX and 10/100 TX models only) 10 Mbps/Half Duplex Sets speed to 10 Mbps UTP manually (10 and 10/100 models only) 10 Mbps/Full Duplex Sets speed to 10 Mbps UTP manually with FDE activated (10 and 10/100 models with RJ- 45 port only) THIN Sets cable type to BNC Thinnet manually (Combo and BNC models only) THICK Set the connection type to "THICK" if you have an adapter that has an AUI port and you will be using that port. This is a 10 Mb/s Half Duplex only connection. TX Sets cable type to RJ-45 twisted pair - 10 or 100Mb/ps T4 Sets cable type to RJ-45 T4 twisted pair - 10 or 100Mb/ps **Make sure that you have selected the appropriate connection type for your network. Also make sure that both failover ports have been configured to use the same connection type.Download Driver Pack
