Driver Installation Readme for Windows NT 3.51 Workstation or Server 

Section 1 ..........Instructions for driver installation when 
                    networking is currently setup on Windows NT.

Section 2 ..........Instructions for driver installation when 
                    networking is not currently setup on Windows NT.

Section 3 ..........SNMP Management Station - Files needed to manage
                    the ANA-6911
 
NOTE:   If you plan to use TCP/IP, you will need to obtain your IP 
        address and subnet information prior to installation.  You
        may have a DHCP server that will provide the IP information
        automatically.  If you are not sure if you have a DHCP server
        or what IP address to use, contact your network administrator.

** SECTION 1 ***
Driver installation instructions for Windows NT 3.51 Workstation or
Server when networking has previously been setup
**********************************************************************

1.  Place an Adaptec PCI adapter (such as the ANA-6911A/TX) in the
    system.

2.  Boot your system with Windows NT 3.51.  (If you are using Windows 
    NT version 4.0, please refer to the NT40.TXT file for Driver
    installation instructions).

3.  Open the "Main" Program Group in Program Manager.

        **** REMOVING EXISTING ADAPTEC ETHERNET DRIVERS ****

NOTE:  If you do not currently have Adaptec or Cogent PCI drivers 
       installed, please skip to step #9.

4.  Open "Control Panel".
 
5.  Open the Network Setup Applet.

6.  In the "Installed Adapter Cards" section of the Network Settings
    screen, remove all Adaptec or Cogent PCI adapters by highlighting
    them and then clicking "Remove".  Repeat this step until you have 
    removed all of the Adaptec or Cogent PCI adapters.

7.  Close  the Network Settings dialog box and allow the system to reboot.

NOTE:
    When restarting Windows NT, you may get message from the Service 
    Control Manager that a service failed during system startup.  This 
    message is a result of all adapters being removed in the previous 
    steps.  This message will go away after adding the new drivers in
    the following steps.   Click "OK" to continue.

8.  Log back on to the Windows NT system.

9.  Open "Control Panel".
   
10.  Open the Network Setup Applet.

11.  Click Add Adapter... in the Network Settings window.

12. At the "Add Network Adapter" window, select "<Other> Requires disk
    from manufacturer" from the drop down list and then click Continue.

13. You are now prompted to "Insert disk with software provided by the 
    software or hardware manufacturer."  Insert the disk with the 
    Windows NT driver.  Be sure to enter the path to the directory
    where the driver and OEMSETUP file is located. Click OK.

        **** DRIVER CONFIGURATION ****

14. From the "Select OEM Option" window, Choose the model of your 
    Adaptec network adapter.  Click OK.  

15. The driver configuration window is now displayed.  You may
    change the connection type in the drop down list to match your 
    needs. The options are:

    Autodetect Default Connection 
	Detects the cable type and optimal line speed for the 
	specific Adaptec PCI adapter model in use. This is the
	default and recommended connection type to select.
	Refer to the NT Help file in the adapter configuration
	screen for the specific default settings for a given adapter.

    InitSense/Half Duplex	
	Detects the line speed (10 or 100 Mb/s) when the adapter
	initializes and is set for Half Duplex mode.

    InitSense/Full Duplex
	Detects the line speed (10 or 100 Mb/s)  when the adapter
	initializes and is set for Full Duplex mode.

    ActiveSense/Half Duplex
	Detects the line speed (10 or 100 Mb/s) when the adapter
	initializes and continues to check to see if the line speed has
	changed.  The adapter will be configured for Half Duplex mode.

    ActiveSense/Full Duplex
	Detects the line speed (10 or 100 Mb/s) when the adapter
	initializes and continues to check to see if the line speed has
	changed.  The adapter will be configured for Full Duplex mode.

    10 Mbps UTP/Half Duplex	
	Forces the connection to 10 Mb/s in Half Duplex mode.

    10 Mbps UTP/Full Duplex
	Forces the connection to 10 Mb/s in Full Duplex mode.

    100 Mbps/Half Duplex	
	Forces the connection to 100 Mb/s in Half Duplex mode.

    100 Mbps/Full Duplex
	Forces the connection to 100 Mb/s in Full Duplex mode.

    THIN
	Use this when connecting to the BNC port of a Combo adapter.  
	This is a 10 Mb/s Half Duplex only connection.

    THICK
	Set the connection type to "THICK" if you have an adapter that 
	has an AUI port and you will be using that port.  This is a 
	10 Mb/s Half Duplex only connection. Make sure to select the 
        appropriate cable type for your network. 
	
    TX                 
        Sets cable type to RJ-45 TX twisted pair - 10 or 100Mb/ps
	  
    T4	
        Sets cable type to RJ-45 T4 twisted pair - 10 or 100Mb/ps
	
	** Make sure to select the appropriate cable type for your network. 
	Also, make sure that both failover ports have been configured to use
	the same connection type.

16.  After choosing your connection type click "Continue".

17.  Repeat steps 15 and 16 for each Adaptec adapter installed in your 
     system.  NOTE: Each adapter can be identified by its unique 
     PCI Bus/PCI Slot number.

18.  If SNMP has not been setup on this computer you will receive the
     following Setup Message:
	
       "! SNMP Service is not installed. To activate SNMP and Adaptec 
       network management features on this system, install the NT SNMP 
       Service. On the network management station, use the configure 
       option to configure Server related MIBs." 

     This is not an error, it is an information dialog. 
     Click "OK" to continue.

NOTE:  This section assumes that you have already installed the desired
       protocols.  If you have not installed a protocol see section 2,
       "Driver installation instructions for Windows NT 3.51 Workstation
       or Server when networking has NOT previously been setup."

** SECTION 2 ***
Driver installation instructions for Windows NT 3.51 Workstation or
Server when networking has not previously been setup-
***********************************************************************

1.  Place an Adaptec PCI adapter (such as the ANA-6911A/TX) in the
    system.

2.  Boot your system with Windows NT 3.51.  (If you are using Windows 
    NT version 4.0, please refer to the NT40.TXT file for driver 
    installation instructions).

3.  Open the "Main" Program Group in Program Manager.

4.  Open "Control Panel".
 
5.  Open the "Network"  applet.

6.  Networking was not previously setup so you will get the following
    message: "Windows NT Networking is not installed.  Install it now?
    Select "Yes".

7.  The Windows NT Setup Screen will appear prompting you to enter
    the path of the Windows NT distribution files. Place the Windows
    NT CD in the CD ROM drive of your computer and at the prompt type:
    D:\I386  (this is assuming D:\ is you CD ROM drive).  If your I386 
    directory or installation files reside in another location, specify
    the path to that location.  Now click Continue.

8.  Click Do Not Detect in the screen titled "Network Adapter Card 
    Detection". 

9.  A new dialog box will appear with the message, "Setup did not 
    detect a network card."  Click Continue.

10. At the "Add Network Adapter" window, select "<Other> Requires disk
    from manufacturer" from the drop down list and then click Continue.

11. You are now prompted to "Insert disk with software provided by the 
    software or hardware manufacturer."  Insert the disk with the 
    Windows NT driver.  Be sure to enter the path to the 
    directory where the driver and OEMSETUP file is located.  
    Click "OK".

12. From the "Select OEM Option" window, Choose the model of your 
    Adaptec network adapter.  Click "OK".

    10 Mbps UTP/Half Duplex	
	Forces the connection to 10 Mb/s in Half Duplex mode.

    10 Mbps UTP/Full Duplex
	Forces the connection to 10 Mb/s in Full Duplex mode.

    100 Mbps/Half Duplex	
	Forces the connection to 100 Mb/s in Half Duplex mode.

    100 Mbps/Full Duplex
	Forces the connection to 100 Mb/s in Full Duplex mode.

    THIN
	Use this when connecting to the BNC port of a Combo adapter.  
	This is a 10 Mb/s Half Duplex only connection.

14.  After choosing your connection type click Continue.

15.  Repeat steps 13 and 14 for each Adaptec adapter installed in your 
     system.  NOTE: Each adapter can be identified by its unique

16.  If SNMP has not been setup on this computer you will receive the
     following Setup Message:

	"! SNMP Service is not installed. To activate SNMP and Adaptec 
       network management features on this system, install the NT SNMP

     This is not an error, it is an information dialog. 
     Click "OK" to continue.

        **** PROTOCOLS AND NETWORK SERVICES ****

17.  Select one or more of the following protocols:
	NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport
	TCP/IP Transport (default)
	NetBEUI Transport
     After selecting the protocol(s) you want to use, click "Continue".

18.  If in the previous step you selected TCP/IP Transport as one of 
     your protocols you will need to select any additional TCP/IP services 
     you wish to use and then click "Continue".
	  
NOTE:  Some of the TCP/IP services require additional configuration.  
       Please refer to your Windows NT documentation on configuring 
       these options.

19. Once protocol configuration is complete, you can close the Network
    setup applet and allow the machine to reboot when prompted.

SNMP Management Station
***********************************************************************

For SNMP Management Station:
1.  The following MIB files need to be compiled on the SNMP Management
    station in order to manage the Adaptec product:
	
        A.   ADPTDMI.MIB - Adaptec Ethernet DMI/SNMP MIB
        B.   FAILOVER.MIB - Adaptec Duralink Failover MIB

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
