Overview

This is the updated BIOS for the Profile 4, version 03PB.20021113.2529.HJU.

Identification

If you have a Profile 4, this BIOS is listed as the current BIOS as of December 5, 2002.

Installation

The BIOS should be updated if:

1. A Gateway technician has told you to update (flash) or re-flash the BIOS.

2. Your computer has demonstrated reasons for concern. Consult a Gateway technician before updating the BIOS.

Use the following steps to update the BIOS.

Note: Because this update is performed within Windows, before beginning this procedure, close all programs and disable any active virus scan software. Close programs with icons in the systray, by right-clicking the icon, and then clicking Disable, Exit, or Close. If no option of this type is available, skip to the next icon in the systray.

Verify that all programs are closed because many programs can affect the update.

1. On your screen, double-click the BIOS update file that you downloaded.

2. The files self-extract and copy into the C:\Cabs\9521512 folder.

3. From the Start menu, click Run.

4. In the Run dialog box, type: C:\Cabs\9521512\Profile4.exe. Click OK.

5. In the flash utility window, after verifying that all programs are closed, click Next.

6. The erasing and writing of files to the BIOS is displayed on the screen. When finished, the computer restarts automatically.

7. As soon as the computer restarts, begin pressing the F2 key in one-second intervals. If you perform this step correctly, the BIOS Setup Utility opens. If Windows loads normally, restart the computer, and repeat this step.

8. In the BIOS Setup Utility, use the RIGHT ARROW key to select Exit.

9. Use the DOWN ARROW key to select Load Default Settings, and then press the ENTER key.

10. When prompted to Load Default Settings, press ENTER.

11. Use the DOWN ARROW key to select Exit Saving Changes, and then press ENTER.

12. When prompted to Exit Saving Changes, press ENTER.

Removal

A computer must have a BIOS to operate, therefore, there is no removal procedure.

Troubleshooting

1. If the BIOS is not reset on the first restart after the update, a "CMOS Checksum bad" message appears. Follow steps 7-12 of the Installation instructions.

2. If after updating to this BIOS version, your computer acts incorrectly or differently than before the update, and all the BIOS settings are the same, contact Gateway technical support.

3. If the computer is not logged on locally with administrator rights, you may not be allowed to perform this update. Please contact your network administrator or your I.T./I.S. support.

Reason for Update

This BIOS provides support for Intel(r) processors with Hyper-Threading Technology.
