Overview

This is the updated BIOS for the Profile 4, version 03PB.20021119.2530.HJU.


Identification

If you have a Profile 4, this BIOS is listed as the current BIOS as of 04/23/2003.

The BIOS should be updated if:

1.  A Gateway technician has told you to update the computer's BIOS.

2.  If your computer has demonstrated reasons for concern, consult a Gateway technician.


Installation

Perform the following steps to update the computer's BIOS.

1.  Download the BIOS update file, and then double-click the file name. 

2.  The needed files self-extract and copy into the C:\Cabs\9523063 folder.

3.  Close all running programs and disable any active virus scan software.  Verify that programs in the Systray, where the time is displayed, are also closed.  To do this, right-click (secondary click) on each icon in the Systray, and then click Disable, Exit or Close, if applicable.

4.  From the Start menu, click Run. 

5.  In the Run dialog box, type: C:\Cabs\9523063\winphlash.exe, and then click OK. 

Note: While the BIOS update is running, do not use any other programs or power down the computer.  Doing so can result is damage to the computer resulting in the need to service it.

6.  The flash utility window prompts you to close all other programs.  After verifying all programs are closed, click Next.

7.  Files are erased, new files are written, and then the computer automatically restarts.  

8.  As soon as the computer restarts, begin pressing the F2 key at one-second intervals.  If you perform this step correctly, the BIOS Setup Utility opens.  If Windows loads normally, restart the computer, and then repeat this step. 

9.  In the BIOS Setup Utility, use the RIGHT ARROW key to select Exit. 

10.  In the Exit screen, use the DOWN ARROW key to select Load Defaults Settings, and then press the ENTER key.

11.  At the prompt to Load Default Settings, press ENTER. 

12.  Use the DOWN ARROW key to select Exit Saving Changes, and then press ENTER.

13.  At the prompt to Exit Saving Changes, press ENTER.


Removal

A computer must have a BIOS to operate, therefore there is no removal procedure.  


Troubleshooting

1. If the BIOS is not reset on the first restart as described in step 8 of the installation instructions, a "CMOS Checksum bad" message appears.  Perform steps 8-13 again to setup default settings.

2. If after flashing to this BIOS file, your computer acts incorrectly or differently than before the flash and all the BIOS settings are the same, please contact Gateway technical support.

3. If when connected to a network, the computer is not logged on Locally with Administrator rights, you may not be allowed to perform this update.  In this case, contact your Network Administrator or your I.T./I.S. support.
