Gateway 850 SCSI JBOD
SAF-TE controller non-clustering firmware
version 2.00

Note: This firmware should only be used with the non-clustered version of the 850 SAF-TE controller.

The following information describes the procedures to upload new firmware to the SAF-TE controller card. The firmware can be uploaded in a "live" environment. There is no need to turn off the enclosure to perform this function. However, the SAF-TE controller does reboot at the end of the update process. It is recommended to stop any disk activity before beginning the update.

These instructions are written using Windows Hyperterminal. If you are using a different terminal emulation program, refer to that program's documentation or help files for information on transferring files.

To upload new firmware:

1. Connect one end of a null-modem RS-232 cable to the SAF-TE Service port located on the rear panel of the enclosure.
The cable is a DB-9 null-modem serial cable.

2. Connect the other end of the cable to either a host system's serial communication port or a VT-100-type terminal.

3. On a host system, run a terminal emulation program (such as Hyperterminal) or start the terminal.

4. Verify the communication parameters are as follows:
  9600 Baud (optional 19,200)
Baud rate set by Switch 6 – up for 19,200 and down for 9,600 (verify the setting by pressing the Alarm Reset button and noting the condition of the Drive Status LED for Drive slot 5).
  8 Data bits
  1 Stop bit
  None (parity)
  Flow Control Off

5. At the cursor, press CTRL+E. The Enclosure Terminal Utility menu appears.

6. Press "5" to select the option "Firmware Upload".

7. Press "u" (must be lowercase) to start the upload. "Transfer the load now" appears on the window.

8. Using the mouse, click Transfers, and then click Send File.

9. Click Browse, locate the new firmware file, select it, and then click Send. The firmware file will have an ".S3R" extension. Make sure that the protocol "Xmodem" is selected. From the Xmodem send screen, you can monitor the progress of the upload. You can safely stop the transfer without affecting your existing firmware any time during the transfer until it has been completed. If you choose to stop an upload while in progress, make sure that the stop (abort) command was completed by pressing CTRL+X at the cursor.

10. After the upload completes, the Upload program updates the second SAF-TE processor. A progress status screen appears. The upload takes several minutes to complete.

11. When the upload program has verified the new firmware has successfully loaded, type CTRL+E to exit.

12. Press the ESC key to return to the Main menu. The firmware update is now complete.
