IV) Troubleshooting

------------Paper/Media
- Paper does not feed straight / Image is skewed on paper.
Solution: Verify that the paper guides are properly set at the edges of the
paper.

- Paper is loaded into the paper feed tray but does not feed into the
printer.
Solution: Reload the paper feed tray after fanning the paper, then press and
release the Resume/FF button on the printer.

- Image does not print on Envelope as selected in the print driver.
Solution: Some applications have media settings which will override the
settings in the print driver. Ensure that the media type is set in the
application prior to printing.

- Jam occurs when adding paper to tray.
Solution: Do not attempt to add paper while the printer is printing; wait
until it is idle. To clear the jam, press and hold the Resume/FF button on
the printer for two seconds to eject the paper.

- Paper does not eject completely.
Solution: Load only one paper type at a time into the feed tray.

------------Fonts
- Text is missing / wrong color, size or font.
Solution: Ensure that the necessary fonts are properly loaded on the PC.

- Text prints too small.
Solution: If too many fonts are loaded on a PC running Windows '95, text may
appear reduced in size on output. Unload some fonts not required for the
print job.

- Fonts print incorrectly from Microsoft Mail.
Solution: Windows font management is responsible for the font used to print
from MS Mail; font substitutions performed by the operating system may
produce undesirable results; see Microsoft Knowledge Base articles Q123000 and
Q86100 for more information.

------------General
- "Printer not ready" message or no print received.
Solution: Ensure that the green Power LED is on. If bi-directional
communication between the PC and the printer is disrupted, reboot the PC and
then turn the printer off and back on.

- "Out of Memory" error appears on PC when trying to print.
Solution: Delete all files from the C:\temp and C:\windows\temp directories;
increase available RAM; use a Print Quality mode other than High Quality;
close unused application windows to free up memory.

- Error when attempting to Print to File.
Solution: When creating a .PRN file, make sure that the file is being placed
on a drive other than the A:\ drive; using Print to File onto a floppy disk
is not recommended.

- Job stops printing.
Solution: Do not open the Print Setup window while a job is processing, either
through the application or via the Control Panel; do not close the Printer
Services or Spool Manager window while a print job is processing.

- "Error while spooling" message appears when attempting to print.
Solution: Verify that the printer is mapped to the correct local port, not a
network device; close windows to free up memory on PC; ensure that only one
device is mapped to the port; do not use a switchbox to connect the printer to
a PC; do not use a port sharing device between the PC and printer.

- Installing the print driver via the File Manager or Program Manager in
Windows 3.1x causes the driver to be mapped to the wrong port.
Solution: Install the driver using the Control Panel - Printers - Add option;
correct the connection via the Control Panel after installing the driver.

- The ink levels shown in the Printer Services window do not accurately
  reflect actual ink levels.
Solution: Do not print with the cover open, as this can affect the ink sensing
mechanism; do not replace ink cartridges before receiving a Low or Empty ink
message.

- Print takes too long to process.
Solution: Deselect the Automatic Image Enhancement (AIE) option in the print
driver (though this may affect print quality, it will reduce the amount of
time needed to process the job); close the Printer Services window and/or icon
between print jobs.

- Print job is collated or not collated, contrary to driver selection.
Solution: Some applications' Collate option will override the setting in the
print driver. Ensure that the Collate option selection is consistent between
the application and the driver.

- Printing via DOS unsuccessful.
Solution: Try mapping the printer to the LPT1 port; ensure that the Spool
Manager and Printer Services windows are closed (if printing from a DOS
window); in Windows 95 use Shutdown and Restart in MS-DOS Mode.

------------Image Quality
- Smudges on edge of print.
Solution: Load only one paper type at a time into the feed tray; increase the
bottom margin of the file.

- Border lines around imported images do not appear on print.
Solution: Depending on how the original image was created, parts of the border
may not print; if a border is desired, create one around the image using the
application's lines / borders option.

- Postscript fill patterns / textures do not print properly.
Solution: Postscript fill patterns may not print correctly on a non-postscript
printer; select a different fill pattern.

- Shading of scanned images is incorrect / patterns appear in shaded areas.
Solution: Scanned images originally produced using a halftone process may
display an interference or moire pattern when printed due to a secondary
halftone being applied by the printer; importing the image into an image
processing application and changing the halftone frequency before printing can
minimize the problem.

- Imported graphics files do not appear on print.
Solution: verify that all necessary linked objects are present prior to
printing.

- Part of the image is cut off.
Solution: Verify that the page orientation is set properly in both the
application's page setup and in the print driver; ensure that the margins
(including headers and footers) for the page are within the printable area for
the printer; see the User Guide for margin guidelines.

- Stray dots or lines appear on print.
Solution: Try Print Quality mode Fast or Normal, or try a different Halftone
mode; match the media type selection in the driver to the media type being
used.

- Colors on output are too dark.
Solution: Try using Print Type mode Auto, Photo or Graphics.

- Light colored areas are missing when printing a color document in Black and
   White mode.
Solution: Some light colors may map to white in monochrome mode; try using
Print Type mode Auto, Photo or Graphics; use a darker color on the document.

- Dark colored areas are black when printing in Black and White mode.
Solution: Some dark colors may map to black in monochrome mode; try using
Print Type mode Auto, Photo or Graphics; use a lighter color on the document.

- Patterns do not appear on output or print incorrectly.
Solution: Try using Print Type mode Auto, Photo or Text, or select a Halftone
mode other than Fine Dither when using Print Type: Graphics.

- Text appears fuzzy or blurry.
Solution: Try using Print Type mode Auto, Graphics or Text; see the User Guide
for recommended media types.

- Text underlines do not print the same color as the text.
Solution: Try using Print Type mode Photo.

- Colors are the wrong shade.
Solution: Experiment with the various Print Quality, Halftone, Intensity and
Media options to create acceptable output.

- Selecting Automatic Image Enhancement (AIE) in the print driver does not
produce noticeable improvement on the output.
Solution: AIE may not function on large images due to system memory
limitations. Try saving images as .BMP or .TIF files, and close unnecessary
applications prior to printing.

- Choosing a Halftone mode of <None> does not produce the desired result.
Solution: This option is effective only with Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow,
Red,Green and Blue; other colors will not be affected.

- There is no apparent difference between certain media / print modes.
Solution: This is expected behavior; some print options may produce similar
output depending on the types of images being used.

- Changing the Intensity setting does not affect certain colors.
Solution: Saturated colors (nearing 100%) may not be affected by this option.
