Overview

This file is used to fix "Trapped Exception in TPKCOPYFORM" errors that may occur with the Gateway Update Utility, version 3.2.0.8, in Windows 98.


Identification

1.  Use this fix if you receive "Trapped Exception in TPKCOPYFORM" errors when running the Gateway Update Utility, version 3.2.0.8.

2.  Supported operating system is Windows 98.


Installation

1.  Remove the Gateway Update Utility and Gateway Drivers and Applications Recovery from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

 a.  From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
 b.  In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
 c.  In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, select Gateway Update Utility (if listed), and then click Add/Remove.
 d.  In the Uninstall dialog box, click Yes.
 e.  Files remove.
 f.  When complete, click OK.
 g.  In Add/Remove Programs Properties, select Gateway Drivers and Applications Recovery (if listed), and then press Add/Remove.
 h.  In the Uninstall dialog box, click Yes.
 i.  Files remove.
 j.  Removal completes automatically.
 g.  Close all programs.

2.  Delete the contents of the C:\Program Files\Gateway\HPA and C:\Program Files\Gateway\SRCD folders from the hard drive.

 a.  From the Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
 b.  In the Exploring – (C:) dialog box, double-click the (C:) folder, double-click the Program Files folder, and then double-click the Gateway folder.
 c.  In the Gateway dialog box, select the HPA folder, and then from the File menu, click Delete.
 d.  In the Confirm Folder Delete dialog box, click Yes.
 e.  Select the SRCD folder, and then from the File menu, click Delete.
 f.  In the Confirm Folder Delete dialog box, click Yes.
 g.  Close all programs.

3.  Locate and double-click the gtwupd.exe file that you originally downloaded from the Internet.  Files are extracted to the C:\cabs folder.

4.  Run the Gateway Update Utility to install and test for error messages.

 a.  From the Start menu, click Run.
 b.  In the Run dialog box, type: C:\cabs\gtwupd\gwmeinst.exe.  Click OK.
 c.  If Trapped Exception error messages re-appear, close them, and then continue to the next step.  If there are no error messages, run the Gateway Update Utility by using the Gateway Update Utility Program Use procedure following step 10.

5.  Download GUU98FIX.EXE from Gateway.com. 

6.  Locate and double-click the downloaded GUU98FIX.EXE file.  Files are extracted to the C:\cabs\GUU98FIX folder.

7.  From the Start menu, click Run.

8.  In the Run dialog box, type: C:\cabs\GUU98FIX\FIXGUU.exe.  Click OK.

9.  Files are extracted to the C:\Program Files\Gateway\HPA and C:\Program Files\Gateway\SRCD folders.

10.  Run the Gateway Update Utility by using the Gateway Update Utility Program Use procedure below.


Gateway Update Utility Program Use

The GW Recovery Program launches Gateway Recovery and Update, which can be used to update drivers.  To start the GW Recovery Program, use the following steps.

1.  From the Start menu, point to Programs, Gateway Utilities, and then click GW Recovery Program.

2.  In the End User License Agreement dialog box, select Yes, I accept it to accept the terms of the EULA, and then click Continue.

3.  In the Gateway Update dialog box, click the Web Updates tab and then click Check Now.

4.  In the Connect dialog box, select one of the following options:

   * If Internet access is already installed and working on the computer, connect to the Internet, and then click Continue.
   * If there is not an Internet connection, click Direct Dial.  Wait while the Internet Connection Wizard appears and the computer connects.

5.  Based on the computer hardware IDs, the Gateway Update Utility locates the files needed for updating, and then displays the list.  In the Gateway Update dialog box, select a driver to be updated, and then click Install.

6.  In the file Download dialog box, select either Download (only) or Download and Install, and then click Continue. The preferred method is to click Download and Install because it is completely automated.  If there are several files to download, click Download only.  Note the location where each executable file is saved on the hard drive.  After all files are downloaded, install each file individually by locating it on the hard drive, and then double-clicking it.


Removal

This fix is removed when the Gateway Drivers and Applications Recovery is removed from Add/Remove Programs.

1.  From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2.  In Control Panel, double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.

3.  In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, select Gateway Drivers and Applications Recovery, and then click Add/Remove.

4.  In the Uninstall dialog box, click Yes.

5.  Files remove.

6.  Removal is complete.  No further removal steps are necessary.


Troubleshooting

If you have difficulty installing this file, perform the following troubleshooting steps. 

1.  Review the preceding software installation procedure.  Ensure that you did not miss any of the steps. 

2.  Restart the computer and then launch the GW Recovery Program again.

3.  Verify that your operating system is Microsoft Windows 98 as this fix is only functional in this operating system.

4.  If you still have difficulties installing this file, download the file again, and then verify that all instructions in this document are followed.


Reason for Update

This fix resolves "Trapped Exception in TPKCOPYFORM" errors that may occur with the Gateway Update Utility, version 3.2.0.8, in Windows 98.
