Overview

This document contains information about installing the Radeon 9800 Pro 128-megabyte (MB) and Radeon 9600 Pro in Windows XP and Windows 2000.  It is certified with Microsoft WHQL.  


Identification

Identification in Windows XP

1.  From the Start menu, click Control Panel.

2.  In Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance.

3.  In Performance and Maintenance, click System.

4.  In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

5.  In Device Manager, double-click Display adapters.

6.  Under Display adapters, if Radeon 9800 Series or Radeon 9600 Series is listed, this is the correct driver.


Identification in Windows 2000

1.  From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2.  In Control Panel, double-click the System icon.

3.  In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

4.  In Device Manager, double-click Display adapters.

5.  Under Display adapters, if Radeon 9800 Series or Radeon 9600 Series is listed, this is the correct driver.


Installation 

Download the file to the desktop, and then perform the following steps. 

1.  Double-click the 9524858.exe file.

2.  The Win-Zip Self-Extractor window opens, and the files are unzipped to the C:\Cabs\9524858 folder.

3.  Close all open programs.

Note: The rest of the installation consists of two procedures.  The first is for installation of the ATI Radeon 9800 video driver.  The second installation is for the ATI control panel, which installs advanced options such as TV-OUT options.


Driver Installation

1.  From the Start menu, click Run.

2.  In the Run dialog box, type: C:\Cabs\9524858\Driver\Setup.exe.  Click OK.

3.  In the Welcome to ATI Install Wizard dialog box, click Next.

4.  In the License Agreement dialog box, after reading the agreement, if you agree to its terms, click Yes. 

5.  The driver is copied and installed.

6.  When complete, to restart the computer, click Finish.


ATI Control Panel Installation

1.  From the Start menu, click Run.

2.  In the Run dialog box, type: C:\Cabs\9524858\Cpanel\Setup.exe.  Click OK.

3.  In the Welcome to ATI Install Wizard dialog box, click Next.

4.  In the License Agreement dialog box, after reading the agreement, if you agree to the terms, click Yes.  

5.  In the ATI Control Panel Setup, click Next.

6.  The control panel files are copied and installed.

7.  When complete, to restart the computer, click Finish.


Removal

1.  Open Control Panel.

 a.  In Windows XP, from the Start menu, click Control Panel.
 b.  In Windows 2000, from the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2.  In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs. 

3.  In the Add or Remove Programs window, select ATI Control Panel, and then click Change/Remove. 

4.  In the ATI Control Panel Setup dialog box, select Remove, and then click Next. 

5.  In the Confirm File Deletion dialog box, click OK. 

6.  ATI Control Panel is removed.

7.  When complete, select No, I will restart my computer later, and then click Finish.

8.  Return to Add or Remove Programs.  Select ATI Display Driver, and then click Change/Remove. 

9.  In the ATI Uninstall dialog box, select the Radeon 9800Series or Radeon 9600 Pro check boxes, and then click OK. 

10.  The driver is removed.

11.  When complete, to restart the computer, click Yes. 


Troubleshooting

If you have difficulty during driver installation or after, perform the following troubleshooting steps. 

1.  Ensure that all cables are securely connected.  

2.  Ensure that the video card is fully seated in the AGP slot.

3.  Set your display adapter to Standard VGA by using the removal process.  After restarting, in the Found New Hardware Wizard dialog box, click Cancel.  Reinstall the driver using the steps in the Installation section of this document.  Ensure that you perform each step.  


Reason for Update

This is the updated video driver for the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and ATI Radeon 9600 Pro.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
