The firmware should be flashed if: 1. You have an NEC DVD-RW/+RW drive, part number 5502922. 2. You are experiencing problems reading the Works Suite 2004 DVD. 3. A Gateway technician has told you to flash or re-flash the computer. Identification The model of the NEC DVD drive is listed as "_NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A" in the BIOS Setup utility and in Device Manager. 1. Open Control Panel. From the Windows XP default Start menu, click Control Panel. From the Windows XP classic Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2. In Control Panel, open the System Properties dialog box. If the computer is in Category View, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. If the computer is in Classic View, double-click the System icon. 3. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager. 4. Device Manager opens. In the Device Manager, click the plus (+) sign next to DVD/CD-ROM drives. "_NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A" should be listed under DVD/CD-ROM drives. Installation Download the firmware file to the desktop, and then perform the following steps. Because many programs can affect the way this firmware flash is completed, it is critical that all programs are closed. 1. On your screen, double-click the firmware update file that you downloaded. 2. The files self-extract and copy into the C:\Cabs\9528682 folder. 3. From the Start menu, click Run. 4. In the Run dialog box, type: C:\Cabs\9528682\NECND13_172.exe. Click OK. 5. In the NEC Firmware Flash Utility for ND-1300A window, select the NED DVD_RW ND-1300A drive from the Selected Drive pull down menu and then click Flash. 6. The firmware is flashed. When finished, click Power Off to turn off the computer. 7. Turn on the computer. 8. From the Start menu, click Run. 9. In the Run dialog box, type: C:\Cabs\9528682\NECND13_172.exe. Click OK. 10. In the NEC Firmware Flash Utility for ND-1300A window, verify both the Current Version and New Version are 1.72. If both are 1.72, click Cancel. If the Current Version is not 1.72, click Flash and repeat steps 6 through 10. Removal The firmware cannot be removed. Troubleshooting If you have trouble flashing the firmware, try the process again following the steps listed in the Installation section of this document. If you are still unable to flash the BIOS, check the following: 1. Verify that the drive has power by opening and closing the drive door. 2. Reseat the IDE cable. 3. Reseat the power connector on the back of the drive. 4. Verify the jumper setting and cable configuration. 5. Re-download the file and try running the firmware flash again. 6.
