Further information is available in the README.TXT provided with Service Pack 5 2) RELEASE NOTES / KNOWN LIMITATIONS ================================= Supported Environments ---------------------- With this release, the following environments are supported: -NDIS3 Driver for Microsoft Windows NT (Ver. 3.51, 4.0) and Windows 95 (CEM33XPS.SYS) -DOS ODI Driver (XPSODI.COM) -DOS NDIS2 Driver (XPSNDIS.EXE) -Packet Driver (XPSPD.COM) -Diagnostic test program (XPSTEST.EXE) -Modem test program (MDMTESTW.EXE) -Modem Enabler (CMENABLE.COM) -Novell LAN driver (XPSODI.LAN) -OS/2 ODI driver (XPSODI.OS2) -OS/2 NDIS driver (XPSNDIS.OS2) The following features are available in this release: -Support for unattended installation to a domain server under Windows NT. For specific instructions on how to implement this feature, please refer to the Readunat.txt file located in the \NT40 directory on the Win95/NT installation disk #1. In some cases it is necessary to install the CEM33-10BT while installing networking for the purposes of joining a Domain. This is true in the case of an unattended installation to an NT domain server. In such cases, download the latest version of PCMCIA.SYS (pcmfix-i.exe). At the time of this publication this file can be obtained at the following URL: ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/usa/nt40/ hotfixes-postSP3/pcm-fix/ Rename the existing PCMCIA.SYS located in the \I386 directory. Copy the updated version to the \I386 directory. See the On-Line Help file for additional information. In a case in which Windows NT has already been installed but networking has not and the need exists to join a domain in this manner, overwrite the PCMCIA.SYS file that currently exists in the \%systemroot%\system32\drivers directory with the new one. You should then be able to install the CEM33-10BT while installing networking without difficulty. -HotSwap support on the Siemens Scenic Mobile Pro 700 P5-133 -Updated XPSOS2.NIF file that includes support for all CEM33-10BT configuration parameters -Support for Network Associates (Cinco) NetXray Network monitoring application has been added with this release Known Limitations ----------------- -When using the XPSODI.COM driver with any laptops using the TCIC/Databook chipset, we recommend that you copy over the XPSODI.COM driver located in the TCIC directory. -When used with Lanalyzer v. 2.2, XPSODI.LAN will detect oversized packets of greater than 5Kb as "jabber" errors rather than as oversized. -When using IBM's EZPLAY Card and Socket Services (CS/S), an IO address must be specified in the NET.CFG, PROTOCOL.INI or on the command line. -Under OEM Service Release Version 2 of Win95 (OSR2) or Windows 98, the multi-function parent device may be displayed under the Modem category in addition to the modem device. The modem device string is: "Modem of Xircom CreditCard Ethernet+Modem 33.6". The other device listed represents the parent multifunction device. -When using QmodemPro in DOS with XPSODI.COM in SHAREIRQ mode, modem performance will be slow. Xircom recommends using MODE IO to improve performance. -Using NT 4.0 with Service Pack 1 may cause some portable PCs to lock up on Shutdown or Restart. Updating to Service Pack 3 resolves this issue. -If you experience intermittent times where the modem will not respond to an AT Command while running CMENABLE.COM on a portable that uses the TI1130 PCMCIA Controller, run XPSTEST and choose the test function to determine the IRQ the card is using and run CMENABLE COMIRQ=x where x is the IRQ determined by XPSTEST. See the User's Guide for additional information on using XPSTEST. -The COM Port Monitor Utility (XCOMMON) must be launched prior to any communication applications in order for it to function. 3) CXCFG.EXE CONFIGURATION UTILITY =============================== In the past, Xircom has provided a file called CXCFG.EXE that is used in conjunction with 16-bit drivers. With this release, CXCFG.EXE is no longer required. Xircom has provided a "dummy" CXCFG.exe for users who just "copy over" files. CXCFG.EXE can be removed from your system when using drivers from this release. 4) SPECIAL CONFIGURATION NOTES =========================== Memory Managers --------------- When using a memory manager, be certain to exclude the memory range being used by the CreditCard adapter. An 8K range will need to be excluded within C000 to EF00. example: device=c:\dos\himem.sys device=c:\dos\emm386.exe x=D200-D3FF This example excludes 8K starting at the D200 segment for use by the CreditCard in a default configuration. If the CreditCard is configured for a memory address different from the default, be certain to exclude the appropriate memory address range. Memory Range Notes ------------------ -The CreditCard Ethernet+Modem 33.6 does not support the memory range D000-D0FF. -On some machines D600-D6FF is not supported. -The CreditCard Ethernet+Modem 33.6 supports only "even" IO addresses (example: 240, 260, 280, 300, 320, 340, 360). If you use an "odd" IO address (example: 310, 330, 250), the adapter will fail to initialize. COM Port Assignment Notes ------------------------- -In Windows 95 or Windows 98 the CEM33-10BT is configured to install the modem at I/O address 02E8 on COM4 by default. In some computers other hardware or virtual ports are already installed that are using these resources in some manner, and the presence of these devices will cause the modem to install on COM5. Some applications may not be able to access the modem in such cases. In order to correct this and move the modem to a conventional COM port location (COM1 through COM4), try the following: Solution 1 If your computer contains an Infra-red serial port or a standard serial port that is not being used, disable this device in both the computer's system BIOS and in Windows via the Device Manager. Then reboot the computer. In many cases, Windows will then re- assign the modem to the resources that are now open (typically I/O address 02F8, COM2) and the situation will be corrected. Solution 2 If you are unable to disable such devices or Windows fails to re-assign the port used, implement the following procedure: 1. Go to the Device Manager. Locate the "Multifunction Parent" device entry for the CEM33-10BT (this may be located in either the Modems group or the Multifunction Adapters group). Double click this entry. 2. Click the Resources tab. Uncheck the box labeled "Use Automatic Settings". 3. Note the Basic Configuration number the adapter is assigned to (in most cases this will be 0000). Choose a different Basic Configuration number to assign the modem to the port desired according to the following scheme: Basic Configuration 0005 - I/O address 03E8, COM3 Basic Configuration 0006 - I/O address 02F8, COM2 Basic Configuration 0007 - I/O address 03F8, COM1 We have found the first option (0005, 03E8, COM3) to be the best choice in most instances. 4. Once the new configuration is selected, click OK. A warning message will be displayed indicating you have made manual changes and asking if you wish to continue. Click Yes. After a few seconds the modem will be assigned to the new settings and the problem will be resolved. Full Duplex Notes ----------------- To utilize full duplex capabilities, your network must have full duplex hardware in place and enabled. If your network connection does not have full duplex and you use the FULLDUPLEX option, your network will become unusable due to excessive collisions. 5) MACHINE SPECIFIC NOTES ====================== ThinkPad 760ED -------------- Xircom recommends disabling the IR port and built in modem, then using interrupt 9. ThinkPad utilities that aid in configuring the 760ED are available from IBM's web site. ThinkPad 760XD -------------- Xircom recommends disabling the IR and Serial ports, then using COM1 for the Xircom modem and interrupt 9. IBM's internal MWave modem should be placed at COM2. Toshiba Portege 660CDT ---------------------- All Xircom references under CardWork in the Registry and all Tranxit references in the SYSTEM.INI must be removed for proper installation using the CEM33XPS.SYS. Card and Socket Services (CS/S) must also be removed from the CONFIG.SYS. Panasonic CF-62 --------------- When using XPSODI.COM or XPSNDIS.EXE in DOS/Win 3.x environments, C/SS needs to be loaded in order for the Adapter to be recognized. When using CEM33XPS.SYS under NT 4.0, the driver fails to initialize. NEC 6050 -------- When using XPSODI.COM or XPSNDIS.EXE in DOS/Win 3.x environments, Xircom recommends adding the keyword MODE IO in the PROTOCOL.INI or NET.CFG. NEC 2400 -------- When using CEM33XPS.SYS under Windows 95 or NT 4.0, the Plug & Play setting in the BIOS must be set to: NO. NEC 6000 and 6030 ----------------- Xircom recommends disabling the IR port. When using the XPSNDIS.EXE or XPSODI.COM under Windows 3.x with CS/S, Xircom recommends going to the CardWiz directory, executing CONFIG.EXE, selecting Modem Card Configurations, and changing the interrupt number of com4 (currently 11), to int=9. When using the XPSNDIS.EXE or XPSODI.COM under Windows 3.x without CS/S, Xircom recommends setting the Modem to load at com4 in the PROTOCOL.INI or NET.CFG. Sharp 9020 ---------- When using CEM33XPS.SYS under Windows 95, remark out the Tranxit references in the SYSTEM.INI. Also, remove the SXIRC027.INF and NETXIR.INF from the \windows\system\inf directory. Sharp PC-8650 ------------- When using XPSODI.COM in DOS/Win 3.x environments, C/SS needs to be loaded in order for the driver to initialize. CMENABLE.COM will not load. 6) MODEM ===== We recommend that you update your modem firmware for the best connectivity and performance. Firmware upgrades are available on the BBS, CompuServe and World Wide Web. See "Xircom Customer Support" below for more information. General Information About 33.6 Kbps Connections ----------------------------------------------- -A 33.6 kbps connection requires near perfect conditions. Items that contribute to a lower connection rate are: -Noisy line conditions on individual calls -Dirty or faulty wiring -Poor connection ability of the modem/fax machine on the other side -The Bulletin Board Service, Internet Service Provider or On Line Service Provider may be forwarding the call to another location (long distance) to extend their local calling areas. To improve the likelihood of 33.6 kbps connections, try connecting to and from different locations. Other Tips ---------- -Fax compatibility depends on what kind of fax you are communicating with. Some faxes work better when communicating in Class 1 mode, others when communicating in Class 2 mode. If you experience any difficulties in faxing, try switching between Class 1 and Class 2 modes. 7) INSTALLATION PROGRAM ==================== DOS 6.x Startup Menu Notes -------------------------- The Xircom CreditCard Ethernet+Modem 33.6 requires an 8K range of your PC's memory. If you are using a memory manager such as EMM386 or QEMM, the installation program requires an 8K memory range. If you have a memory manager definition in each of your startup (boot) sections, the installation program will display a message which will ask you whether you would like the program to exclude this memory range in each of your startup options, or save the recommended changes in a separate file so you can make changes only to the startup option or options you wish. Previous Installations ---------------------- If you have existing Novell network drivers loaded in your CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT, the Installation Program will attempt to remove (REM) the entries since these entries could conflict with the Xircom installation. If the installation program cannot remove these entries, you will be prompted to REM or remove them yourself. After you remove or REM out the existing driver entries in your system files, re-run the Xircom installation program in order for configuration to be completed correctly. 8) XIRCOM CUSTOMER SUPPORT ======================== To obtain customer support for your Xircom product, please call or send a facsimile to the appropriate number listed below.
