  Getting Started
  ---------------
  The followin example illustrates the installation of the FA312 adapter
  card.  The sample procedure also applies to the FA311 adapter card.

  Installation Procedure
  ----------------------
  1.  The Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM or diskettes are needed for the following
      procedure.

  2.  Insert the FA312 network adapter into your computer and power up your
      Windows NT 4.0 system normally.

  3.  After the system boots up properly, double-click on "My Computer" on
      the desktop.

  4.  In the System window, double click on the "Control Panel" icon in the
      system window.

  5.  In the Control Panel window, double-click on the "Networks" icon.

  6.  Select the "Adapters" menu tab. Click on the "Add" button.

  7.  Click on "Have disk".

  8.  Insert the driver disk into the floppy drive.  Enter the drive leter
      where the Drivers and Diagnostics disk is inserted.

      Enter "A:\" if the drive letter for the floppy drive is A.

  9.  Select the "NETGEAR FA311/FA312 PCI adapter".

  10. Windows NT will copy the driver files from the driver disk.  It also
      will pop up with the Configure Network Adapter window.  You can change
      the "NetworkMedia" and "RxBufferCount" parameters.

      For "NetworkMedia", choose the "AutoSense" option. The driver will
      auto-detect the media that is connecting to the adapter.
      
      Other possible connection type selections are "10Base-T", "10Base-T
      full_duplex", "100Base-TX", and "100Base-TX full_duplex".
      
      Caution: Unless necessary, do not modify the NetworkAddress field.
      The driver will use the default unique Ethernet address contained in
      the serial ROM on the adapter.       

  11. After completing the file copy process, Windows NT will prompt you for
      reboot the PC.  Click on YES to restart the system.


  Make Installation Startup Disk set from Windows NT Server
  ---------------------------------------------------------
  1.  Copy all files from the \CLIENTS directory in the Windows
      NT Server CD into the hard disk of the server.  In the example
      below, we assume that all files are copied into the \CLIENTS
      directory.

  2.  Remove the Read-only file property of the WCNET.INF file and modify
      it as below (It should be at the path "\CLIENTS\MSCLIENT\NETSETUP"):

      a. Find the section listed below

      b. Append the following line
  
      -----------------------------------------
      FA312="NETGEAR FA31X",999,ndis,ethernet,0x01,FA31x,FA31x_nif
      -----------------------------------------

      c. Find the section listed below

      -----------------------------------------
      ;
      ; Netcard Install and Protocol Sections
      ;
      -----------------------------------------

      d. Append the following two sections 

      -----------------------------------------
      ; NETGEAR FA31x
      [FA31x]
      ndis2=1:FA31x.dos

      [FA312_nif]
      drivername=FA31x$
      -----------------------------------------

  3.  Remove the Read-only attributes of the WCSETUP.INF file and modify
      it as below  (It should be at the path "\CLIENTS\MSCLIENT\NETSETUP"):

      a. Find the section listed below

      -----------------------------------------
      [netdrivers]
      -----------------------------------------

      b. Append the following line at the end of the section

      -----------------------------------------
      1=,FA31x.dos,,FA31x.dos,
      -----------------------------------------

  4.  Copy the NDIS2 for DOS driver "FA31x.DOS" at the root directory of
      the driver disk "A:\" to the same "\CLIENTS\MSCLIENT\NETSETUP"
      directory.

      Now file modification and addition are complete.

  5.  From the Windows NT Server desktop, open the Network Client
      Administrtor.

      Click on "Start" from desktop, highlight "Program", highlight
      "Administrator Tools" and "Network Client Administrator".
  
  6.  Click the "Make Network Installation Startup Disk", then click "OK".

  7.  In the "Target Workstation Configuration" dialog box, select the 
      "Network Client v3.0 for MS-DOS and Windows" item of the "Network
      Client" list box.

  8.  Select the "NETGEAR FA31x" item of the "Network Adapter Card" list box.
      Then click "OK" button.

  9.  Insert a MS-DOS bootable floppy diskette to the drive A:.

  10. In the "Network Startup Disk Configuration" dialog box, specify the
      settings of your startup diskette.   Then click "OK".

      The possible settings are computer name, DHCP/TCP/IP settings, etc.

  11. Now, the system will copy the related files to the floppy diskette.

      The creation of "over the network installation disk" is complete.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
