Pantone* (R) Color Calibration Files for the magicolor (R) 2350 Print System

Introduction
The PANTONE Color palette files on this disk can be read directly into commonly used applications, so you can have printer-calibrated versions of all PANTONE Colors. These files have been calibrated by a color scientist at Pantone, Inc. specifically for the magicolor 2350 Print System.

When a Pantone color scientist calibrates a printer, they develop a custom CMYK combination for every color in the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM (coated stock only) except metallics, fluorescents, and double impressions. This calibration is done visually because this method is more accurate than automated color matching routines. For example, a mathematically generated PANTONE Color simulation may look fine under incandescent light but wrong under fluorescent light.

Since every printer can not image every PANTONE Color, the color scientist finds the closest possible simulation of each color. For this reason, the PANTONE Color simulation files on this disk are calibrated only for the magicolor 2350 Print System.

NOTE: If you plan to create color separations, you must recolor your graphics using the built-in PANTONE Color tables supplied by your application. These PANTONE Color files, provided by MINOLTAÐQMS, Inc., are used for proofing only.

This readme file explains how to install the PANTONE Color files from the .zip file on Software Utilities CD-ROM, describes the contents of the files, and also provides application notes.

If you require the PANTONE Color files on disk instead of on CD-ROM, contact your vendor for purchase information. You can also download these files via the World Wide Web at http://www.minolta-qms.com.

Contents
A folder is created called 'magicolor 2350 PANTONE' that contains the following folders and files:

Application Support (Folder)
Color Charts (Folder)
HowToPan.pdf (PANTONE readme file)
Instructions.txt (This file)

Application Support Folder
This folder contains the color palettes for the supported desktop publishing applications. The instructions on loading these palettes into the applications are included in the 'HowToPan.pdf' document. In addition to following these general guidelines, refer to the manuals that came with the other applications for detailed information about loading and using color palettes.

Color Charts Folder
This section provides support for other applications that are not mentioned in the above sections. Some applications can import a variety of file types that allow you to incorporate the PANTONE Colors for the magicolor 2350 Print System into your documents.

Adobe Acrobat
1. Copy the 'Minolta-QMS magicolor2350.pdf' file to an appropriate folder on your Macintosh's hard disk. The 'Minolta-QMS magicolor2350.pdf' document is located in the Adobe Acrobat folder inside the Color Charts folder.

2. Double-click the file in order to launch Acrobat Exchange or Acrobat Reader. A 53-page PostScript color chart will be displayed.

3. You can view or print individual pages of this chart or a range of pages.

EPS Charts
Sometimes there is not a way to display the name of a selected PANTONE Color swatch due to limitations of some applications. To work around this problem Pantone has created a set of EPS charts that contain all of the PANTONE Colors in the PANTONE Process Color Imaging Guide. You can use these charts in any image processing application that supports EPS files.

1. Copy the EPS files to an appropriate folder on your Macintosh's hard disk. These files are named according to the pages where you can find the PANTONE Colors in the PANTONE Process Color Imaging Guide. For example, 1-11.eps contains the PANTONE Colors that are included on pages 1-11 of the PANTONE Process Color Imaging Guide. The EPS files are located in the EPS Charts folder inside the Color Charts folder.

2. Open the appropriate EPS chart in your application as you would any EPS file.

Text
The 'Minolta-QMS magicolor 2350.txt' file, located in the Text folder inside the Color Charts folder, is used as reference CMYK values used for the PANTONE Colors. This file can be opened using any common text editor or word processing application.

TIFF
The .tif files have been created for other graphic applications that do not support loadable palette files or libraries. TIFF files are bitmap graphic files that can be imported, opened or printed. When a .tif file is opened in an application, you can sample the correct PANTONE Color by using an eyedropper or similar tool that allows the user to load specific colors into their applications color palette.

HowtoPan.pdf
This file contains further information provided by Pantone on how to use the palette files for the magicolor 2350 Print System. This .pdf file can be read with Adobe Acrobat Reader.
