PS Executive Series Utilities Installation
Overview
This file is divided into three sections:
- Introduction to PS Executive Series Utilities
- Detailed instructions for installing the utilities on your PC
- QMS customer support
We recommend that you print a copy of this file before you begin
the installation.
Introduction
PS Executive Series Utilities is a collection of programs that
enhance your QMS printer's potential. These easy-to-use, menu-driven
programs provide a quick way to configure your printer to suit your
system and printing requirements. This section lists some of the
features of the utilities as well as the hardware requirements, and it
provides information on working with the keyboard and a mouse.
Features
The utilities offer the following features for DOS-based systems:
- Menu selection of printer options
- Serial and parallel communication setups
- Printer emulation selection
- Printer resolution selection (multi-resolution models)
- Paper tray selection (multiple-tray models)
- Page size selection (adjustable tray models)
- PostScript font downloading
- Printer hard disk utilities (for models with internal and/or
external disks)
- Print screen utility
- Screen angle (halftone) selection
- Black overprint
- Windows 3.x PostScript driver
NOTE: Features and options vary according to the type of QMS printer
you select to use with the utilities. Options not applicable to or
not available on your printer are either grayed-out on-screen or not
listed at all.
The main PC utilities are on both 5.25" and 3.5" disks marked "MS-DOS
format." (You also have two disks labeled "Windows Driver" which you
may set aside for now. They are covered in the "Windows 3.x PostScript
Driver" file WINDRV.TXT.)
Hardware Requirements
The installation program copies the utilities to your computer and
prepares your printer and computer to communicate. To install and use
PS Executive Series Utilities, you should have a basic operating
knowledge of your computer. You must also have
- An IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/1, PS/2, or 100%-compatible system
- DOS (ver. 2.1 or later) or OS/2 (ver. 1.2 or later)
- 512 KB of available RAM
- A hard disk (1.5 MB or more available space)
This software fully supports the following:
- MDA, CGA, EGA, or Hercules Graphics Card
- Monochrome or color monitor
- Bus or serial mouse
NOTE: With the exception of the Executive Print Screen utility, PS
Executive Series Utilities are also compatible with VGA and Super
VGA monitors.
Working with the Keyboard and a Mouse
Before you begin installation, take a few minutes to become familiar
with how to work with the PC utilities. The two main ways are to use
either the keyboard or a mouse. Also, you may use a combination of
both.
Using the Keyboard
The keyboard user-interface design is based on new and emerging
industry standards. One major change is the Enter key. In the
past, often Enter was used throughout programs to confirm
individual choices, such as within windows, menus, and boxes. In
these utilities, Enter has two main functions:
- To confirm all choices on the screen as one group and move to
the next screen.
- To end text entry in a field or select drives and subdirectories
from lists.
Use other keys in the following manner:
- Tab: To move from field to field.
- Spacebar: To activate buttons or toggle check boxes on and
off.
- Arrows: To move within lists and menus.
- Escape: To cancel and return to the previous screen.
- F1: To obtain general help on the utilities from the
main program screen, starting at main menu levels
and allowing selection of menu options. Many other
screens have Help buttons to specific information.
- Accelerator To provide keyboard shortcuts. For example, to
Keys: choose an option, hold down the Alt key and press
the key that corresponds to the highlighted letter
in the selection's name.
Using a Mouse
Instructions for installing and using the utilities are written for
the keyboard. It is assumed that you know standard mouse procedures
and can substitute them for the keyboard instructions, if you want
to use a mouse. If not, check your mouse documentation.
The program MOUSE.COM must be loaded into memory for the mouse to
work in the PS Executive Series Utilities. Also, on a multiple-
button mouse, use the left button.
NOTE: If you try to run a DOS application that requires the DOS
mouse under Windows 3.0, Windows uses its own mouse capabilities.
The mouse moves, but you cannot click on anything. In this case,
you must use the keyboard and accelerator keys to work in that
application. (See the following section for more information.)
Installation
This section discusses the preparation necessary before beginning the
installation, describes the available programs and configurations, and
then provides detailed installation instructions.
Before You Begin
Before installing the utilities, do the following:
1. Turn on your computer and printer. Your computer and DOS must be
running to install PS Executive Series Utilities.
2. Print a status or start-up page on your printer. (See the
printer user's guide for instructions.) This page outlines the
printer's serial, parallel, and AppleTalk communication settings.
You may need to know these settings during installation.
3. Make a backup copy of the program disks and label them exactly as
the originals. Store the originals in a safe place and work with
the copies. (See your DOS documentation for disk copying
instructions.)
Available Programs and Configurations
The PS Executive Series Utilities include a variety of programs
that may be installed. The following list describes the programs and
optional methods of installing or configuring them.
NOTE: Features and options vary according to the type of printer
selected through the utilities. Options not applicable or not
available to your printer are either grayed-out on-screen or not
listed.
- Install All
This selection allows you to have all the utilities installed on
your system without having to choose each program individually.
During installation, prompts appear for you to enter information,
such as host setup or printer type, which is needed for the
programs to run correctly.
- Installation Program
This selection installs the installation program on your system
for later use, such as for reconfiguring the main program,
changing the password, or turning on or off password protection.
The program's flexibility allows you to configure your host port
or load individual programs. If you decide not to use this
program, you may still install the utilities from the program
disks. However, working from floppy disks is slower and may
require disk changes.
- PS Utilities, Main Program
The main utilities program contains most of the functions to
customize your printer. The software includes parallel and serial
communication setup for the host and printer. This program also
has options such as choosing paper trays; changing the printer
name, emulation, or resolution; re-allocating printer memory;
resetting to factory defaults; downloading fonts; and printing.
- PSFont, Font Downloader
This is a separate program for downloading fonts. Use the PSFont
download program from the DOS command line to add fonts to those
resident in the printer. If you do not wish to use this program
now, you may install it later. Font downloading is also a
feature of the main program. To get help using PSFont after it
is installed, at the DOS prompt type psfont -? and press Enter.
- PSPrint, Text Print Utility
This is a separate program for printing text from the DOS command
line. PSPrint allows you to print a straight text file (a program
not generated by an application and which is straight ASCII
text). It may be useful if you program or want to print a text
file from the DOS prompt. To get help using this program after
it is installed, at the DOS prompt type psprint -? and press Enter.
A list of options displays on the screen. Text printing is also
a feature of the main program.
- Configure Only
This selection allows you to reconfigure options for utility
programs already installed on your system. It does not install
the utilities on your system.
- Miscellaneous Utilities
This collection of files is for technically advanced users to
modify or create PostScript configuration files outside of the PS
Executive main program. Most of the files duplicate other program
functions. However, several unique files are available only in
the Miscellaneous Utilities files.
The Miscellaneous Utilities include a Microsoft Word driver for
dual-tray configuration.
Several files are included for network users. The QMS Crown
Network Notes manual contains information on these network files.
- PostScript Samples
These PostScript Sample Files allow you to see some of the
capabilities of your printer. For example, they demonstrate
resident typefaces, forms, and graphic art samples.
- Executive Print Screen
This program allows you to capture what you see on the screen
and print it in PostScript mode. It is useful for printing
directory listings, short Edlin files (such as AUTOEXEC.BAT), and
text and graphics screens when your printer is in ESP or
PostScript mode. For more details on Executive Print Screen, see
PRTSC.TXT file.
A file's content must be fully displayed on the screen. To print
longer text files, use the PSPrint program.
Installation Instructions
To install the utilities, use the following procedure:
NOTE: Select the Help button for help during installation. As the
program installs, various message screens inform you of the progress.
1. Place the copy of program Disk 1 in drive A. At the DOS C> prompt,
type

9. If you want the utilities settings to be password protected,
select Access Code Required. Then enter an access code
password up to 20 characters in length (the default access
code is PSEXEC).
NOTE: Make a note of your access code. It can be changed only
by the installation program.
This password limits access to main program options which
change printer default settings (such as paper trays, printer
emulation, and printer resolution). We recommend using the code
for security on networks to prevent anyone without the code
from changing persistent printer parameters.
Select Continue when you are done. A Language Level screen
appears.
10. Select the PostScript level you want the utilities to support.
Level 2 works for PostScript Level 2 files and most PostScript
Level 1 files. Level 1 B/W and Level 1 Color are only for those
Level 1 black-and-white or color files that are not compatible
with Level 2.
NOTE: This selection only designates the PostScript level the
utilities are to support. It does not change the PostScript
level setting on the printers.

QMS Customer Support
Several sources of help and information are available, depending on
the type of help you need:
1. Your QMS vendor
Your local vendor (the one from whom you bought the printer) may
be best equipped to help you. Your vendor has specially trained
service technicians available to answer questions, and the
equipment to analyze your printer problems.
2. Your application vendor
Often, "printing" problems have more to do with the application
being used than with the printer. In this case, the application
manufacturer is the best source of help.
3. Q-FAX
Q-FAX, a QMS information retrieval service, provides application
notes, technical support notes on common printing problems, and
information about printer specifications, options, accessories,
consumables, and prices.
In the United States and Canada, call (800) 633-7213 to reach
Q-FAX. In all other countries, call (205) 633-3850. Have your fax
number handy when you call (or place the call from your fax
machine's handset). You can choose to have either a directory (a
list of currently available documents on a particular topic) or a
specific document sent to you. The first time you call, request
the directory (press 2 on your phone or fax keypad when prompted).
Then call back to request specific documents. You can order up to
three documents per call.
4. The QMS Corporate Bulletin Board System (BBS)
The bulletin board contains technical support notes, application
notes, drivers, patches, and utilities, and you may leave
technical questions not requiring an immediate response on
electronic mail for the Sysop (System Operator). The bulletin
board [(205) 633-3632] operates at 1200/2400 baud, 8 data bits,
no parity, 1 stop bit, with XMODEM and YMODEM capabilities.
Contact QMS Customer Technical Support for more information about
the bulletin board.
5. CompuServe
Through CompuServe, you ask general (non-technical) questions,
share information with other users, and access printing
information and programs. When you use CompuServe, type one
of the following commands:
go dtpven takes you to the DTP Vendor forum; QMS is
section 3 of that forum
go qmsprint takes you directly to the QMS library
section
The QMS library section contains application notes, printer
drivers, utilities, technical information, and announcement
files.
6. QMS Customer Technical Support
In the US, QMS Customer Technical Support is available from
8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Central Standard Time, at (205) 633-4500.
You can also fax questions to CTS at (205) 633-3716. Please
indicate whether you would like a faxed or a phoned reply.
If you call for assistance, have the following information ready
so our technicians can help you more quickly:
- Your phone number, fax number, and shipping address
- A description of the problem
- The printer model
- The type of host computer you are using
- The type and version of operating system you are using
- The interface you are using, and, if serial, the protocol
- The application and version you are using
- The emulation you are using
- Your printer firmware version (listed on the status and start-up
pages)
