Voice features require a voice modem. Speakerphone features require support from the modem (recommended). ======================================================================= Installation Issues ======================================================================= FaxTalk Communicator 4.5's installation program automatically installs the correct set of files and features depending on the modem selected during installation. Depending on the type of modem selected you may notice differences in the appearance of features, menus and dialogs. This is perfectly normal, as the software will only present the options available to the specific modem. To use all of the features found in the FaxTalk Communicator program it is recommended that you use a fax/voice/speakerphone modem. Manually Selecting a Modem The installation program automatically queries the modem to determine what features the modem supports. If for some reason the installation program cannot query the modem or if you want to manually select the modem you can use the "Don't query the modem ======================================================================= General Issues ======================================================================= Caller ID and Distinctive Ring Services --------------------------------------- Caller ID and Distinctive Ring services are fully supported by FaxTalk Communicator. In general, FaxTalk Communicator 4.5 uses Windows TAPI to handle all modem communications and relies on the Windows operating system to provide Caller ID and Distinctive Ring information. If you want to use Caller ID and/or Distinctive Ring with FaxTalk Communicator 4.5 the following must occur: - You must subscribe to a Caller ID and/or Distinctive Ring service from your phone company. - You must be running Windows 95 or Windows 98. Microsoft NT 4.0 does not offer TAPI based support for Caller ID or Distinctive Ring services. - You must have the proper TAPI files installed under Windows 95 or Windows 98. For Windows 95 users, Microsoft included support for Caller ID and Distinctive Ring in a TAPI driver update called UniModemV. For more information on installing the correct version of TAPI under Windows please contact Microsoft. - You must have the proper .INF configuration file for your modem. Contact your modem manufacturer regarding acquiring, installing, and using a Caller ID and Distinctive Ring enabled .INF configuration file. Automatic loading of FaxTalk CallControl ---------------------------------------- Once FaxTalk Communicator 4.5 is installed on the computer the FaxTalk CallControl program will automatically load each time you start Windows. This can sometimes cause problems for older 16-bit programs such as AOL when they try to access the modem. You can close FaxTalk CallControl by right-clicking on the FaxTalk CallControl icon and selecting Exit. This will permit older 16-bit applications to use the modem until the next time you start Windows. If you want to prevent FaxTalk CallControl from automatically loading Windows you can disable the setting on the General tab in the Program Configuration. With the setting disabled FaxTalk CallControl will only load when you manually double-click on the FaxTalk CallControl icon or when generating an outbound operation. TAPI Dialing ------------ FaxTalk Communicator 4.5 uses the Windows Dialing Properties when making dialing requests to the modem. This allows FaxTalk Communicator to use the same dialing characteristics such as long distance calls and credit card dialing as the Windows operating system. There are times when the Windows Dialing properties can cause problems with dialing numbers that are local but treated as long distance. You can disable FaxTalk Communicator 4.5's use of the Windows Dialing properties by enabling the "FaxTalk should always dial numbers exactly as entered" option on the Modem tab in the Program Configuration. When this option is enabled only the numbers entered in the FaxTalk Communicator software will be used when dialing. Scanning Documents ------------------ Due to the nature of faxes and the fax resolutions supported by fax machines, you must make sure that when scanning documents to fax you select a black and white or line art setting at a resolution of 200dpi. Other settings such as 4, 8, or 24-bit color and resolutions such as 72, 150, 300 or 600 dpi will cause scanning to fail or the scanned images to appear incorrectly when faxed. Notification Settings --------------------- When you install FaxTalk Communicator 4.5 with voice support over an existing fax only installation of FaxTalk Communicator 4.5 the previous fax and pager notification settings will be lost. This occurs because of the differences in how notification is handled between fax only and voice installations. You will need to re-enter your notification settings. Screen Calls ------------ FaxTalk Communicator includes an option to enable the ability to screen incoming calls by listening the the playback of the greeting and the caller leaving a message. The Screen Calls feature requires that your modem include specific support for this ability. If your modem does not support the ability to screen calls, the option will appear disabled in FaxTalk Communicator and you will not be able to select the feature. ======================================================================= Technical Support ======================================================================= The following technical support options are available for FaxTalk Communicator 4.5: - Contact the technical support department of the manufacturer of the modem that included FaxTalk. - Visit the FaxTalk World Wide Web site at http://www.faxtalk.com.
