   Windows 98SE

   Introduction:
   -------------
   The Gigabit driver don't support Windows98,only support Windows 98SE.
   This document describes the procedure to install Windows 98SE
   driver for Realtek RTL8169 PCI Gigabit Ethernet adapter.

   Location of Driver :   \Win98\RT8169N5.SYS

   Installing driver procedure on Microsoft Win98 SE :
   -------------------------------------------------------------------
      Before you start with the installation process, make sure that your
      adapter should be properly installed in your PCI bus slot.
      Executing Win98SE, it will auto-detect your system configuration
      and find the adapter hardware.  

      1. When Windows 98SE prompts with "PCI Ethernet Controller" in
         "New Hardware Found" dialog box, click the "Next" button.

      2. Select "Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended)"
         form the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box, then click the
         "Next" button.

      3. Insert the Realtek RTL8169 driver disk into drive A and specify
         the setup file pathname A:\Win98, then click the "Next" button. 

      4. Windows 98SE will prompt with "Realtek RTL8169 Gigabit Ethernet
         Adapter" in the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box.

      5. Click the "Next" button in the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog
         box,then Windows 98SE will copy the driver(.sys) from A:\Win98
         to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and the driver(.inf) from
         A:\Win98 to the C:\WINDOWS\INF directory.

      6. When Windows prompts with "Realtek RTL8169 Gigabit Ethernet
         Adapter" in the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box, click
         the "Finish" button.

      7. Win98SE will finish the other installation procedure
         automatically, then you restart the system.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
