1.0  General Information on the Motorola Point Enabler

Q:  What is a Point Enabler?

A Point Enabler is a driver that configures a PC Card for
use by your computer system.  This is an alternative to
configuring your card using Card and Socket Services.
Card and Socket Services either comes with your computer
or can be loaded by installing CardWizard provided to you
with the Motorola.

Q:  What is Card and Socket Services?

Card and Socket Services software serves as an interface
between PC cards and your computer. Socket services software
is hardware specific to the PCMCIA chipset that is used in
the computer to control the sockets. Card services provides
a universal software interface that is independent from
the hardware that controls the PC Card socket. Card
Services allows for the registration of PC Card clients.

Q:  How do I install the Point Enabler?

The Motorola Point Enabler is called MOTPE.EXE and can be
added to the autoexec.bat file or loaded manually from
the DOS prompt.


Q:  What are the advantages and disadvantages of using the
Point Enabler rather than Card and Socket Services?

Advantages:
    Point Enablers require a smaller memory footprint -
    Programs that require large amounts of memory may
    require the memory taken by Card and Socket Services.
    To allow these programs to run correctly, you must
    minimize the memory resident programs on your system.
    One of these programs is Card and Socket Services.
    Replacing Card and Socket Services with the point
    enabler can save you up to 100K.  The point enabler
    can be loaded into memory as a "one shot" which
    consumes little to no memory.


Disadvantages:
    Point Enablers don't support other cards - Card and
    Socket Services software allows multiple cards to be
    plugged into your computer system. This allows usage
    of modem cards, memory cards, SCSI cards,and many other
    types of cards to be used at the same time.  When a
    Card and Socket Services software is not used, a point
    enabler for each card being used will have to be loaded.


Q:  What operating systems can I use Point Enabler with?

Win 3.1, Win 3.11, DOS.
Cannot use the Point Enabler with Win95 and Win NT.

Q:  How do I use the Point Enabler?

1. Load the Point Enabler by running the program MOTPE.EXE
either from DOS prompt or autoexec.bat file. Make sure
to load the Point enabler before the network drivers.
You can type in MOTPE -? from DOS prompt for a list of
the available options.

2. Make a note of the allocated resources such as Modem I/O
base as reported by the Point Enabler. The default Modem IRQ
used is: COM1/COM3 - 4, COM2/COM4 - 3

3. If using Windows, load the Point Enabler before loading
Windows.

4. Make sure that the required memory window has been
excluded in the CONFIG.SYS file.
Example:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=D000-DBFF


Q:  Is the Point Enabler Compatible with my system?

The Point Enabler has been designed to work on the majority
of computer systems available.  It works with any system
that uses a Intel compatible PCIC PCMCIA controller.  These
include controllers from Intel, Vadem, ASCII,Cirrus Logic,
and others.  This version of the point enabler does not work
with Databook controllers or any non-Intel compatible types.


2.0  TroubleShooting

1. You can type in MOTPE.EXE -? from DOS prompt for a list
of the available options.

2. The default Modem IRQ used is:
COM1/COM3 - 4, COM2/COM4 - 3

3. If using Windows, load the Point Enabler before loading
Windows.

4. Make sure that the required memory window has been
excluded in the CONFIG.SYS file.
Example:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=D000-DBFF

5. Make sure to remove the Card and Socket services before
loading the Point Enabler.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
