TechJET Color Plotter Firmware Upgrade Instructions Using The Parallel Port:
Technical Support Hot Line (800) 451-7568 Updated: 05 April 1996
Hardware Connection Requirements:
PC Host Computer with a working parallel port (i.e. lpt1).
Parallel cable, Centronics connector.
CalComp 53xx Plotter must be connected to a PC directly for this
configuration.
NOTICE:
* If installing flash firmware version 1.42 or higher, a Berg jumper
must first be installed on the parser board (location W3 BTWREN).
Once installed, the jumper should not be removed.
* Some plotters may already have a jumper on this location. Models
5324GT, 5336GT, 5336GT/PS and TechJET 175i are shipped with this
jumper in place.
~ These models do not require a visual inspection and you may safely
upgrade the firmware.
~ The MINIMUM firmware version for these models is 1.42.
Do NOT attempt to download prior firmware versions to these models.
* For other TechJET Color 5324 and 5336 series plotters, visually
confirm that the jumper is in place prior to upgrading the firmware.
Failure to perform this step will corrupt the boot code program
rendering the plotter to be unusable.
Procedure for Installing/Confirming that the Berg Jumper is installed:
Note: The following step-by-step instructions are also available
with illustrations on the CalComp FaxBack document retrieval system
(714/821-2914). Request document number 4020.
* Power off the plotter. Unplug the AC power cable and host interface
cable.
* Raise the dust cover, pull out the plunger on the left side of the
dust cover and remove the dust cover.
* Remove the four screws from the right and left rear and the two
screws from the right and left front of the carriage cover (two in back
and one in front on each side). Remove the carriage cover.
NOTE: If the plotter does not have the two screws in the front of the
carriage cover, then tilt the rear cover up and forward to free the
front lip from the endbell and remove the cover. Be careful to not
scratch the endbell.
* Remove the two screws from the top rear and the two screws from the
bottom front of the right endbell. Lift the right endbell up and unplug
the control panel cable from the control panel (3M type connector with
plastic side latches). Remove the right endbell.
NOTE: If the plotter does not have the connector on the control panel
board, then disconnect the cable from the engine controller board.
* Touch the metal surface of the plotter to prevent ESD damage.
* Locate W3 BTWREN on the parser board.
* If a jumper is NOT installed at this location, then install the Berg
jumper at the W3 BTWREN location.
NOTE: There should be a spare jumper on the parser board (location
W17). If not, then either contact CalComp Technical Support (1-800-
451-7568) and ask for a Berg jumper to be sent to you, or pick up a
two position Berg jumper at any local electronics store.
* After the jumper has been installed (or visually confirmed that it
has already been installed), reassemble the plotter in the reverse order
of disassembly.
~ Connect the control panel cable and install the right endbell.
~ Install the carriage cover and dust cover.
~ Connect the AC power cable and host interface cable.
Procedure for Upgrading the Firmware After Installing/Confirming that the
Berg Jumper is installed:
* Put the plotter into download mode by pressing and holding the + and
- keys while turning the power on the plotter. Hold the two keys until
the plotter initializes. The plotter will display "Awaiting download
file".
* Install the floppy diskette containing the firmware in the disk
drive.
* At the DOS prompt, type the appropriate drive designation, either A:
or B: and press enter.
* At the DOS prompt, type:
UPGRADE 1 <Enter> (if the plotter is connected to LPT1).
UPGRADE 2 <Enter> (if the plotter is connected to LPT2).
UPGRADE 3 <Enter> (if the plotter is connected to LPT3).
