Installing the Windows Driver
 for CalComp Raster Plotters

1. The drivers are installed by running the SETUP executable on the distribution disk. To execute SETUP,

	- Run Windows.

	- Select RUN from the Program Manager's File menu.

	- Enter A:SETUP or B:SETUP in the Command Line dialog.

	- Insert the CalComp distribution disk in the A: or B: drive.

	- Click the OK button or press <ENTER>.

2. Select your printer model when prompted. Single or multiple models are selected by clicking on the model name.

The CalComp TechJet Designer 5424+ and CalComp TechJet Designer 5436+ may be selected for TechJet Designer with firmware revision of 1.20 or later. The firmware supports an advanced capability which allows the driver to automatically set the plotter's resolution without any manual changes from the plotter's control panel. The plotter's firmware version is displayed on the control panel following the plotter power-on initialization.

During SETUP, the required files are copied to your hard disk and all needed modifications are made to your Windows Initialization files. By default, the driver is connected to LPT1 and the last chosen printer is chosen as the default printer. If these settings are not acceptable, proceed with step 3 once SETUP exits. If your plotter is connected to LPT1, the driver is ready for use.

3. From the "Main" group in the "Program Manager" window, double-click on the "Control Panel" icon, or select it and press <Enter>.

4. From the "Control Panel" window, double-click on the "Printers" icon, or select it and press <Enter>.

5. To change the port that the plotter is connected to or to save the plot data to a file, select "Connect..." or type <ALT-C>.

6. In the "Ports:" list select the appropriate port or "FILE:" to output to a file. If you select "FILE:", you will be prompted for the file name when you print from your application.

For best overall performance, CalComp recommends that a parallel "LPT" port be used to send the raster data to the plotter, and that you select the "Fast Printing Direct to Port" by clicking in the small box or typing <ALT-F> until the "X" is shown.

Click on "OK" or press <Enter> when the connection information is correct.

7. To change other driver settings such as the default paper size, click on the "Setup..." button, or type <ALT-S>.

8. To set the default paper size, click on the down arrow along the right edge of the "Paper Size:" value, or press <ALT-Z> then press the down arrow and up arrow keys to select the desired paper size. If you select "User Defined Size..." you will be shown another dialog box to allow you to specify other paper sizes.

9. You can also change the "Orientation" by selecting either "Portrait" or "Landscape" or typing <ALT-P> or <ALT-L>, respectively.

NOTE:

By Windows definition, "Portrait" orientation means that the page is
taller than it is wide when you view text upright and "Landscape"
means the page is wider than it is tall. To conform with this definition
you must load the media with the shorter media dimension across
the plotter.

Since the pinch roller of the TechJet cannot handle media
less than 11 inches wide, the "Letter", "Legal", "ARCH 1" and "A4"
sizes must be loaded with the longer dimension across the plotter.

In driver releases prior to 1.17, whenever the longer media dimension
was loaded across the plotter, the "Portrait" and "Landscape" definitions
were reversed. This meant you selected Portrait to plot Landscape
orientation and Landscape to plot Portrait orientation. In driver revisions
1.17 and later, this anomaly is corrected internally for all applications
excepts Microsoft Word for Windows.

10. To examine or change other driver parameters, select the "Options..." button or type <ALT-O>.

The default "Dithering" is set for "Line Art" (Fine for the TechJet Color). This setting is good for typical CAD drawings. You can change the "Dithering" by clicking on the corresponding radio button, or typing <ALT-T>. You may wish to experiment with other settings of "Dithering" or the "Intensity Control".

11. If you select the "About..." button (or type <ALT-A>) the version and copyright information will be displayed.

12. Click on "OK" or press <Enter> to return to the "Options" dialogue window.

13. Click on "OK" in the "Options" dialogue to return to the "Printers" window.

14. Select "Close" or press <Escape> when you are finished with the driver changes.

Setting Up the
TechJET Plotters

The TechJET menu is entered by pressing the MENU button. Use the UP and DOWN arrow buttons below the display to move from a menu item to the next or previous item.

1. Some complex pages will require that Windows process the data for the printer in "bands". It is important that the TechJET does not interpret delays between bands as the end of the page.

Move to the menu item "EOP timer:", and press the "+" or "-" keys until "Disabled" is displayed.

2. In order to print actual size, move to the menu item "Input Resolution". Press the "+" or "-" keys until "360 DPI" is displayed.

Note:

This step is only required if you are using the 5424 or 5436 plotter that has firmware version earlier than 1.20.

If you have the TechJET connected via a serial port (RS-232C)...

3. Using a serial port is NOT recommended since the data transfer times are so much slower, but if you need to connect using a "COM" RS-232C serial port then both Windows and the plotter need to be set up correctly.

a. On the Windows "Connect..." dialog box, select the appropriate "COM" port for the connection (for example, "COM2:".) The "Settings..." button will now be enabled.

b. Click on "Settings...", or type <ALT-S>.

c. Click on "Baud Rate:" and select "19200", or type <ALT-B> and press the <up-arrow> key until "19200" is shown.

d. Similarly, set the "Data Bits:" to "8", set the "Parity:" to "None", set the "Stop Bits:" to "1", and set "Flow Control:" to "Xon / Xoff".

e. On the TechJET control panel, press "MENU" to enter the menu, and move to the "Port Type:" menu item. Press the "+" key until "RS-232C" is shown.

f. Move to the "BAUD Rate:" menu item and press the "+" or "-" key until "19.2K" is displayed.

g. Move to the "# of bits-Parity" menu item and press the "+" or "-" key until "8-None" is displayed.

h. Move to the "Handshake:" menu item and press the "+" or "-" key until "XonXoff" is displayed.

Using the Windows CCRF Driver
 for
 CalComp Raster Plotters

Print.

Using the Windows CCRF Driver For CalComp Raster Plotters is the same as for any other Windows printer driver. Simpy select "Print" from the "File" menu of your application.

Printer Setup.

Some applications also display a "Setup..." button on the "Print" dialog box, or may have a separate "Print Setup..." selection on the "File" menu that allows you to change the paper size, the resolution of the plot, the dithering and the intensity from within the application.

Other simpler applications, such as Microsoft's "paintbrush" accessory, don't have a way to access the driver "Setup" from within the application. If the application does not have a "Printer Setup" function, all of the TechJET driver features can still be changed using the "Control Panel" "Printers" tool that is a standard part of Windows.

Refer to the "Installation" sections 9 through 11 for instructions on using the "Printers" tool to change to printer settings.

Loading Paper.

Load the paper in the TechJET with the shortest paper dimension across the plotter for all paper sizes with a short dimension of at least 11 inches.

The "A Letter", "Legal", "ARCH 1", and "A4" sizes must be loaded with the long paper dimension across the plotter. Note that "Legal" size paper can be used on the 36 inch wide model 5436 TechJET , but not on the 5424 24 inch wide model.

Margins.

The entire page is printable on all CalComp Raster Plotters models except the TechJet models.
The TechJET has .5 inch margins on three sides of the paper, and a 1.5 inch margin on the fourth side (2 inches for the color models). The 1.5 inch margin is along the "Top" for "Portrait" printing and long the "Left" for "Landscape" printing. These margins are provided to the application, so many applications will automatically set the margins or will issue a warning if the plot will not fit within the area that is inside the margins.

Some applications will automatically change the image to fit the printable area of the paper when the paper size is changed and some applications will require you to select a "Fit" or "Repaginate" menu item. There is no strict standard that is used among Windows applications. The printable area for the 16 paper sizes is given below.

Type	Size Printable Area

Troubleshooting the TechJet plotters

"CCRF Error" Displayed on Control Panel
This message is most likely the result of the TechJET processing data after "EOP Timeout" has occurred. Make sure that the "EOP Timer:" on the plotter control panel is "Disabled".

If you are connected to the TechJET using a serial RS-232 port, then
you may have the "COM:" port settings or the plotter control panel settings set incorrectly. Refer to "Setting Up the TechJET Plotter" above.

Nothing Printed
If the "Input Resolution" is set to a value other than "360 DPI" and the "5424+"
or the "5436+" driver is being used with a TechJET with firmware revision prior to 1.20, the the plotter will show "Online +", but will not plot anything. Change to the "5424" or the "5436" driver, or make sure that the "Input Resolution" is set to "360 DPI" on the plotter control panel.

Information Missing at Plot Margin
"Plot Clipped" Displayed at Control Panel
If plot data is missing ("clipped") along the edges of the plot, this is due to data that is too large for the paper size. Some applications, such as Microsoft "Write" require that you "Repaginate" in order to adjust the length of the page to the printable area of the paper.

Wrong Size Plot
The TechJET automatically scales the incoming data assuming that the "Input Resolution" setting describes the resolution of the input data. If the "Input Resolution" is not set to "360 DPI", then the plot will be the wrong size.

For example, if the "Input Resolution" is set to "2032 DPI", then the plot will be about 1/5 of the correct size.

If you have a TechJET with firmware version 1.20 or greater, then you can use the "5424+" or the "5436+" driver which automatically sends a command to the plotter to set the input plot resolution to 360 dpi without requiring any manual control panel setting.

Testing the Hardware Connection.

The driver diskette contains a file of data that was created from the CalComp Windows Driver using the Windows "Write" Accessory. This file can be sent to the plotter in order
to verify that:

	1) the port on your computer is working properly,
	2) your cable is working,
	3) the plotter control panel settings are correct for the type of connection.

There is also a file on the driver diskette that can be used to output the data to the plotter called "TJ_TEST.BAT". This file will automatically send the test data file "TJ_CCRF.CRF" to the TechJET plotter.

Note:
If you are using a serial port at a Baud rate other than 19,200 Baud, you will have to edit the "TJ_TEST.BAT" file to change the "MODE COMx:..." parameter. Refer to your DOS help for how to use "EDIT" under DOS and information on the "MODE" command.

Test output to the TechJET using the following steps.

1.	From the DOS prompt (usually something like "C:\>"), type:
A: <Enter> if the driver diskette is in the "A:" drive
				, or,
B: <Enter> if the driver diskette is in the "B:" drive

2.	Type the following command to begin the test:

	TJ_TEST <Enter>

3.	Enter the number for the Port corresponding to the plotter connection,
then press <Enter>. For example, to send the test output to the TechJET
attached to "LPT1:", type the following:

	1 <Enter>

The plot that is produced should look like this page of the printed document.

Known Problems (mono 1.22, color 1.25)

1. Incorrect output with Page Maker 5.0

Symptoms: Incorrect output is produced when the following media sizes are selected,

	A1 (594 X 840 mm)
	A2 (420 X 594 mm)
	ARCH1 (9 X 12 in)
	ARCH2 (12 X 18 in)
	ARCH3(18 X 24 in)
	ARCH4(24 X 36 in)

Workaround: Specify the required page size with the User defined media size.

2. True type fonts are not output with Art and Letters 3.12.

Symptoms:True Type font text does not print.

Workaround: Use Art and Letters fonts

3. Wrong colors are output with CorelDraw 5.0

Symptoms: CorelDraw 5.0 files are plotted in two colors (typically red and black).

Workaround:

 - Restart Windows (exit Windows if in use then run Windows).

 - Run the Windows Control Panel.

 - Select the Calcomp color plotter you wish to use.

 - Click the Setup... button.

 - Click the Option... button.

 - The Fine dithering option should be highlited. Select the Coarse dithering option.

 - Exit the driver setup dialog and the Control Panel. This procedure updates
your win.ini file. From that point on, the Fine dithering option may be reselected
    if desired.

CorelDraw 5.0 files should plot correctly.
