General Information

Firmware Upgrades
===================

The FlashROM utility upgrades the firmware on the 3Com 3C562 LAN/Modem
adapter and displays the current firmware version of the 3C562. In DOS,
the FlashROM utility works with Card Services or an Intel PC-Card
controller or Intel compatible PC-card controller. In DOS, you must have
the 3Com Configuration Manager, 3CELCM.EXE, loaded to enable the modem.
In Windows 95, Windows NT, or OS/2 you must have the NDIS or ODI network
driver loaded to enable the modem.

The latest version of the firmware can be obtained from the 3Com
bulletin board.

To display the current firmware version execute "flashrom version"
with the 3C562 adapter in the PC. It is a good practice to run
"flashrom version" before attempting the firmware upgrade to assure
the FlashROM utility can talk to the 3C562 Modem. If the version is
not displayed, reconfigure the card and try again. Do not attempt to
upgrade the firmware if you can not display the firmware version.

To upgrade the firmware on your 3C562 adapter, copy the new firmware
image file (for example, V205.ROM) to your hard disk in the same directory
as the FlashROM utility. The upgrade will take about one minute to
complete, depending on the speed of the PC.

WARNING: Once the upgrade starts do not disrupt the process in any way
(powering down the PC or removing the 3Com PC Card from the machine).
If the firmware upgrade is aborted during the writing to the flash
memory the card will have to be returned to 3Com for repair.

     DOS procedure: The Configuration Manager 3CELCM.EXE must be loaded
     to enable the modem. If you leave the network driver loaded, the
     adapter cables should not be plugged in when running the FlashROM
     utility. If the laptop does not have an Intel PC (or compatible)
     Card controller, Card Services must be loaded.

     For users with Windows 95 or Windows NT, you may want to use
     our WinFlash graphical utility. This utility is not provided
     with this product, but will come with any firmware image file
     you will receive or download from 3Com.

     Windows 95, Windows NT procedure: The network driver must be
     loaded to enable the COM port. Because the driver is loaded,
     which is for both network and modem, the cables should not be
     plugged in during the firmware upgrade. The IRQs supported
     are: 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 15.

     OS/2 procedure: From an OS/2 window, run 3SWITCH and enable
     the modem function. From a DOS window run the FlashROM utility.

After upgrading the firmware the PC must be rebooted before using the
3C562 adapter.

Problems and Solutions
======================

Problem: Error message appears as the driver loads.
          Message: "Error: configuration manager is not running, run
                    3CELCM.EXE first"
Solution: Make sure that the 3CELCM.EXE entry appears before the driver
          name, and that the 3CELCM.EXE is located in the directory stated
          in the path. (The file is available in the root directory of the
          3Com EtherDisk diskette.)

Problem: Install/Diagnostics hangs at "Please Wait..." prompt.
Solution: In order to run the Install/Diagnostics you must have at least
          480K of conventional memory free. (You can check how much you
          have using the MEM command at the DOS prompt). If you have less
          than 480K, you can comment out items from the CONFIG.SYS or
          AUTOEXEC.BAT files to free up memory. Make sure that Card
          Services remains loaded. Another option is to reboot, and click
          on F8 when the "Starting DOS" message is displayed. A prompt
          appears telling you which items to load, and which items not to
          load.

Problem: Install/Diagnostics program seems to run slowly.
Solution: Installing a memory manager will increase performance.

Problem: The modem fails to dial or function.
Solution: Make sure that the configuration manager (3CELCM.EXE) is loaded
          and that your application is set to the same COM port as the
          configuration manager.

          1. The Configuration manager automatically attempts to allocate
             a free COM Port. However, because of machine incompatibilities,
             it is sometimes unable to do so. If the Configuration Manager
             (3CELCM.EXE) loads successfully and there is still a problem,
             add COM=X to the existing Configuration Manager (3CELCM.EXE)
             entry to specifically designate a COM Port assignment. The
             Configuration Manager entry is either in the AUTOEXEC.BAT,
             STARTNET.BAT or CONFIG.SYS (depending on your NOS). (To change
             COM Port assignment for Windows For Workgroups, see Problems and
             Solutions below)

             The entries should look similar to the following:

                    3CELCM.EXE COM=1
                 or 3CELCM.EXE COM=2
                 or 3CELCM.EXE COM=3
                 or 3CELCM.EXE COM=4

             If one COM Port assignment doesn't work, try another.

          2. Make sure the SYSTEM.INI file in your WINDOWS directory
             contains the required COMxBASE= and COMxIRQ= statements in
             the [386Enh] section, as follows:

             [386Enh]
              :
              :
             COM1BASE=03f8
             COM2BASE=02f8
             COM3BASE=03e8
             COM4BASE=02e8
             COM1IRQ=4
             COM2IRQ=3
             COM3IRQ=4
             COM4IRQ=3
          3. If the modem still fails, try changing COMM.DRV=XXXX
             to COMM.DRV=COMM.DRV.

          4. Remove any

                     device=SSVCD.386
                  or
                     device=PCMVCD.386

             from the [386Enh] section of SYSTEM.INI

          5. Make sure that

                     device=*vcd

             is in the [386Enh] section of SYSTEM.INI

Problem: Need the Configuration Manager (3CELCM.EXE) to select a specific
          COM Port assignment in Windows For Workgroups environment. (In
          other words, override the Configuration Manager's ability to auto-
          detect free COM Ports and use them).
Solution: Edit SYSTEM.INI and in the "[network drivers]" category delete
          the "3CELCM.EXE" from the "netcard=" entry so that it looks like
          this:
                 netcard = elpc3x.dos.

          Edit your CONFIG.SYS and add the following line:

          device=c:\[subdirectory where 3CELCM.EXE resides]\3CELCM.EXE COM=1
                or
          device=c:\[subdirectory where 3CELCM.EXE resides]\3CELCM.EXE COM=2
                or
          device=c:\[subdirectory where 3CELCM.EXE resides]\3CELCM.EXE COM=3
                or
          device=c:\[subdirectory where 3CELCM.EXE resides]\3CELCM.EXE COM=4

          depending on which COM port you want to use. (If the modem does
          not dial using one COM port setting, there might have a conflict
          with another device, so try another COM port assignment).

Problem: Windows reports that the COM port is not valid.
Solution: Make sure the SYSTEM.INI file in your WINDOWS directory
          contains the required COMxBASE= and COMxIRQ= statements in
          the [386Enh] section, as follows:

            [386Enh]
               :
               :
            COM1BASE=03f8
            COM2BASE=02f8
            COM3BASE=03e8
            COM4BASE=02e8
            COM1IRQ=4
            COM2IRQ=3
            COM3IRQ=4
            COM4IRQ=3

          If the problem still occurs, try changing COMM.DRV=XXXX
          to COMM.DRV=COMM.DRV (also in your SYSTEM.INI file).

Problem: When running installation on the IBM Thinkpad 755Cs or IBM 750
          machines with Card Services loaded, a message "Card services not
          detected" is displayed.
Solution: In the CONFIG.SYS file, comment out the
          "device=c:\thinkpad\autodrv.sys" and reboot prior to running the
          install\diagnostics.  After running the Install\Diagnostics,
          uncomment that line in the CONFIG.SYS file and reboot.

Problem: Inconsistent IRQ options between the Install/Diagnostics and
          user guide.
Solution: IRQ 4 is also available for LAN + Modem operation. Install\
          Diagnostics program does not allow you to set IRQ 4 as an option.
          In order to use IRQ 4 for COM port, add COM=1 or COM=3 to the
          Configuration Manager (3CELCM.EXE) entry in either AUTOEXEC.BAT,
          STARTNET.BAT, or CONFIG.SYS.  (i.e: 3CELCM COM=3).

Problem: PROCOMM PLUS will hang if Windows is loaded twice. (Scenario:
          Load Windows; run PROCOMM PLUS; exit Windows; Load Windows again;
          Run PROCOMM PLUS)
Solution: Make sure the SYSTEM.INI file in your WINDOWS directory
          contains the required COMxBASE= and COMxIRQ= statements in
          the [386Enh] section, as follows:

            COM1BASE=03f8
            COM2BASE=02f8
            COM3BASE=03e8
            COM4BASE=02e8
            COM1IRQ=4
            COM2IRQ=3
            COM3IRQ=4
            COM4IRQ=3

          If the problem still occurs, try changing COMM.DRV=XXXX
          to COMM.DRV=COMM.DRV (also in your SYSTEM.INI). Another
          solution is to install Windows For Workgroups instead
          of Windows 3.1.

Problem: When running AutoLink, you get the following error:
                Not ready reading drive F:
                Abort, Retry, Fail?
Solution: AutoLink will try to connect to your Novell network server using
          drive F: as the first network drive. You may have a program
          that assigns drive F: as a local drive (e.g. RAMDRIVE.SYS,
          SRAMDRV.EXE, etc.). Either configure the program to assign a
          different drive, or comment out the program that assigns
          the logical drive and reboot.

Problem: When running PC AnyWhere the PC locks up or the network connection
          is lost.
Solution: PC AnyWhere can not work simultaneously with the Network running.
          The 3C562 uses one shared interrupt between the LAN and the modem.
          The solution is to NOT load the LAN drivers. This will allow PC
          AnyWhere to work on the laptop in modem only mode.

Problem: Windows NT hangs at boot up when running on an HP 4000C.
Solution: The HP 4000C handles the 300-30Fh address range in a
          non-conventional manner. The adapter must be configured to
          not use I/O port 300 (which is the default for the Windows NT
          driver).

Problem: The FlashROM utility displays the error message when the
          Configuration Manager is loaded, "Can't find initialized COM port.
          Make sure the 3Com driver is loaded."

Solution: The modem function didn't work because the built-in COM1(IRQ4)
          was present and the IRDA port was assigned on Com4(IRQ3). Run
          the BIOS configuration utility to assign the IRDA port to COM3
          to free IRQ3 for the FlashROM utility.
