***************************************************************************** ** Release Notes for the Kodak 450GL Printer ** ** Software (Driver) for Windows, 1.01 ** ***************************************************************************** Drafted: February 18, 1993 Modified: August 4, 1993 This "Read Me" file is a collection of tips on using the printer software for the Kodak 450GL Digital Color Printer; more complete information on using the printer software can be found by referring to Appendix B of the Kodak 450GL User Manual. The information provided here has been divided into two sections: - Quick Info: This section highlights a few details about using our software. - Application Tips: This section offers tips on working with various applications. ***************************************************************************** ** Quick Info ** ***************************************************************************** - Many applications assume that a halftone image should be generated (for those not familiar with halftone output, imagine a print looking like a photographic image displayed on an EGA or VGA monitor: instead of continuous color, a smaller range of colors is mixed to produce a speckled, grainy approximation of the real full-color image). Since the Kodak 450GL printer supports full (continuous) color, halftone output should be disabled. In many applications, disabling halftone output is represented by the option "Use Printer's Halftone." See the "Application Tips" section for more detailed information on each application. - Most applications have a Copies setting in their print dialogs which overrides the Copies setting in our Printer Setup dialog in most cases. - Appendix B in the User Manual (in the section "Connecting the software") indicates that the Transmission Retry value should be raised. This setting affects how long Windows will wait before deciding that the printer is not responding; a higher Transmission Retry value forces Windows to wait long enough for the printer to finish without putting up a dialog box saying that the printer is "not responding". If the "Fast Printing Direct to Port" feature is used, the Transmission Retry value gets ignored. The solution is to open the win.ini file with a text editor and look for the section of settings starting with "[windows]". In this section, increase the value of the setting "TransmissionRetryTimout" to 60 (seconds) or higher. Information on "Fast Printing Direct to Port" and "Transmission Retry" is provided in the Windows User Manual. - The page dimensions for the printable area of this printer (in Portrait mode) are 4.6 inches (512 pixels, 111dpi) long by 3.4 inches (468 pixels, 138dpi) wide. The actual physical paper size is 5.5 inches by 3.9 inches, so the printer margins are 0.45 inch on top and bottom and 0.25 inch on left and right sides. ***************************************************************************** ** Application Tips ** ***************************************************************************** - Micrografx Designer 3.1: + If the Copies setting is one (1) in the print dialog, the number of copies printed is equal to the number of copies specified in the Printer Setup dialog. Specifying (in the print dialog) any number of copies beyond one single copy overrides whatever value has been set in the Printer Setup dialog. - Corel Draw 3.0: + TrueType fonts do not print correctly (i.e., too little or too much spacing between characters) unless a setting is changed in a Corel Draw initialization file. To change the setting, use a text editor to open "coreldrw.ini" inside the "draw" directory (which resides in the directory where all of the Corel applications are installed). In this file, look for the section of settings starting with "[CDrawConfig]"; one of the settings is "FontRasterizer=1" -- change this to "FontRasterizer=0". Remember to save the file to make this change permanent. The change will take effect the next time Corel Draw is started. - Arts and Letters 3.1.1: + We recommend using Arts and Letters version 3.1.1 or later. - Image-In-Color 3.0: + Initial settings cause monochrome prints. To fix: Select the "Use Color" checkbox in the print dialog. + Initial settings cause prints to look washed out. To fix: Click on the "Tone Curves" button in the print dialog. In the dialog that appears, click on the "Reset" button and then on the "OK" button. - Aldus PhotoStyler 1.1a: + We recommend using PhotoStyler version 1.1a or later. + Before each print, PhotoStyler warns the user about the printer's aspect ratio. Follow the directions given there to avoid getting distorted output. - Halo Desktop Imager 2.0: + Images are speckled or grainy (halftone). To fix: Select the "Use Printer's Halftone" checkbox in the print dialog. + There is apparently a bug in Halo Desktop Imager 2.0 which causes the left side of the image to be repeated one or more times across the page. This should only occur if there is not very much memory (less than 4 Mb available); try printing from a machine with at least 4 Mb of memory, and if this is already the case, try closing any other open applications. - ZSoft Publisher's Paintbrush 2.0: + Images tend to print either too thin (portrait mode) or too wide (landscape mode) because of the printer's aspect ratio. To fix: Uncheck "Proportional" in the application print dialog (the purpose of this action unfortunately conflicts with the intention of the "Proportion" setting). Change the units of the page dimensions to pixels and then change the dimensions*. + ZSoft's Publisher's Paintbrush is one of a number of applications which try to access all printer drivers installed on the system. As a result, if any unexplained behavior occurs, it will likely have been caused by a bug in another installed driver. Sometimes the title in the title bar of the Print Setup dialog will show some strange characters. - Corel Photo-Paint 3.0: + The printer's aspect ratio is not accounted for, so images always print either too thin (portrait mode) or too wide (landscape mode). If "Actual Size" is selected in the print dialog, the image will not be distorted, but then it cannot be scaled. The only workaround is to scale the image on the screen before printing. To do this, select "Transform" from the Edit menu, and then select "Area...". In the dialog which appears, turn on the "Proportional Resize" checkbox, and then calculate the new dimensions by multiplying or dividing the original dimensions. If "Actual Size" is not selected in the print dialog, the image on the screen has to be resized, or stretched, so that the result on the printer is not stretched (proportional). To do this, do the same steps described earlier for scaling the image, but turn off "Proportional Resize" before calculating the new dimensions*. - Harvard Graphics 1.0: + When working with documents that were originally created for larger paper sizes, try to avoid changing the page orientation more than once. Each time the orientation is changed, Harvard Graphics tries to fit the image onto the new page orientation by shrinking the size of the image. - Microsoft PowerPoint 3.0: + Select "Scale to Fit Paper" in the application's print dialog to reduce the slides to fit on one page. + PowerPoint apparently has problems when switching between different printer drivers. Information and settings intended for one printer driver can end up affecting another printer driver. In one instance, the Brightness drop box in the Kodak 450GL Printer Setup dialog box was always blank because of a setting made in another driver. As a workaround, try saving the document after switching to the Kodak 450GL printer driver, quit from PowerPoint, and then open up the document with PowerPoint again. It might also be necessary to restart Windows. - Corel Chart 3.0: + Remember to change the page size by selecting "Page Setup..." from the File menu and then entering a custom page size of 4.6 inches by 3.4 inches. - Micrografx Picture Publisher 3.1: + Always creates halftone images. + If printed image has text and cross-hairs, select "Color Postscript Printer" from the "Print Style" list box in the Printer dialog accessed from the Setup menu option in the File menu. Turn off all options and save as the "450GL Color Printer" print style. In the future, remember to select this print style. ---------------- * If portrait mode is set, change the width value to 1.243 times the original width (round the result); leave the height value untouched. If landscape mode is set, change the height value to 1.243 times the original height (round the result); leave the width value untouched. ---------------- Note: All company and product names are trademarks or registered trademarks of their respective owners.Download Driver Pack
