  The 3C90X Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL Bus Master Adapter Family
                   NDIS 3.0 driver and Windows 95


The NDIS 3.0 driver for Windows 95 is the 32-bit driver version that 
Windows 95 defaults to.  The actual driver file that 3Com supplies is 
EL90X.SYS, included in the 3Com EtherDisk diskette. Windows 95 does not 
have a built-in driver for the Fast EtherLink XL adapters, so the drivers 
must be installed from the 3Com EtherDisk diskette.  Following are 
guidelines for installing the NDIS 3 drivers.
 

First-Time Installation
------------------------
1.  After installing the card in the PCI slot and connecting the cables to
    the network, turn on the computer and start Windows 95.

    Windows 95 will autodetect the new hardware in the system and search
    for existing driver files.

2.  Select Driver from disk provided by the hardware manufacturer from the
    prompt that appears. Then click OK.

3.  Insert the 3Com EtherDisk diskette in your floppy drive and then 
    specify the correct drive letter at the prompt. For example, for floppy
    drive A:, type:

    A:\ [Enter]

    Click OK.

4.  Once the W95EL90X.INF file has been read, select the correct adapter
    from the list and then click OK. 

5.  Windows 95 now reads the W95EL90X.INF file from the 3Com EtherDisk 
    diskette and imports the following files:

        EL90X.VXD       for Enhanced mode 32 bit NDIS driver (NDIS3)
        EL90X.DOS       for Real mode 16 bit NDIS driver (NDIS2)
        
6.  Installation is complete.


 Replacing an Old Adapter  
 ------------------------
1.  In Windows 95, click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.

2.  In the Control Panel, select Network and then the old adapter driver
    description in the configuration box. Then click Remove.

3.  Click OK, then Start. Then select Shut Down Computer.

4.  Turn off the computer and then insert the new adapter in the PCI slot.

5.  Connect the cables to the network, turn on the computer, and start
    Windows 95.

6.  Windows 95 automatically detects the new hardware and checks for
    available driver files.

7.  When prompted, insert the 3Com EtherDisk diskette in the floppy drive.
    Specify the drive location and then click OK.

8.  Windows 95 reads the W95EL90X.INF file and imports the drivers from the
    diskette.

9.  Installation is complete.


Updating Adapter Drivers  
------------------------
1.  In Windows 95, click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.

2.  In the Control Panel, select Network and then select the old adapter
    driver description in the configuration box. 
     
3.  Click on Remove and then click Add.

4.  Select Adapters and then select 3Com.

5.  Click Have Disk and then insert the 3Com EtherDisk diskette in the 
    floppy drive.

6.  Specify the correct letter of the drive where the driver is located.
    For example, if the drive is A:, type:

    A:\ [Enter]

    Click OK.

7.  Once the W95EL90X.INF file has been read, select the correct adapter
    from the list. Then click OK. Follow the instructions on the screen
    to update the other Windows 95 drivers.

8.  The driver update is now complete.


Verifying Driver Installation
-----------------------------
1.  In Windows 95, click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.

2.  Select Network and then select the adapter from the configuration box. 
    Then click Properties.

3.  In the Driver Type tab, verify that the item below is selected: 
        
    Enhanced mode (32-bit and 16-bit) NDIS driver


Hints
-----
1.  If an error message appears, saying that the .INF file cannot be found
    in the specified location, verify that the file actually exists. The
    file should be in the root directory of the 3Com EtherDisk diskette. 
    The filename is W95EL90x.INF.

    If it is missing, download the disk from 3Com's download sites, and
    make sure you expand it properly. Refer to the SUPPORT.TXT file on this
    disk for more information.

2.  To verify that the actual NDIS 3 driver was copied to your Windows 95
    system, compare the date of the EL90X.VXD file in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM
    directory of your hard drive with the date of the one in the \WIN95
    directory of the 3Com EtherDisk diskette. The dates should be the same.
