2.0 Installing Monitor Green

Installing Monitor Green is easy. The installation program asks you a few
simple questions and then copies the necessary files and programs onto
your hard disk. If your PC is attached to a local area network, please
refer to Section 11.0 of this guide for other important information.

To start the installation program, do the following:

1. Insert the Monitor Green diskette into drive A or B.
2. Type A:INSTALL or B:INSTALL <Enter> at the DOS prompt.
3. Follow the installation instructions on the screen.

If you have chosen to run Monitor Green software under Windows, the program
will create a program group for Monitor Green automatically the next time
you enter Windows.

3.0 Starting Monitor Green

If MGREEN.EXE was added to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file during the install
procedure, Monitor Green will be started automatically whenever you start
your system. Otherwise, you must do the following to start Monitor Green:

At the DOS prompt, type MGREEN and press <Enter>.

4.0 Choosing operation options

You specify operating options by running the program MGCONFIG.EXE. You
can run this program under DOS by typing MGCONFIG at the DOS prompt.
You can run the program under Windows by double-clicking the OPTI-GREEN
Config icon.

From the MGCONFIG screen, choose one of the following operation options.
1. Disable power saving function
If you choose this option, Monitor Green will turn off the power saving
function. While this option is selected, your monitor will be
prevented from entering power saving states.

2. VESA DPMS
If your monitor complies with the VESA DPMS specification, choose
this option. Monitor Green will use the standard method provided by the
VESA DPMS specification to signal to the display to enter into power
   saving states.

3. RGB Detection
Some green monitors have an RGB detector in addition to a VESA DPMS
detector. The RGB detector detects whether the screen is blank and if
so, puts the monitor into a power saving state. If you choose this
option, Monitor Green will clear the screen to initiate entry into a
power saving state, rather than sending the signal in the standard
   VESA DPMS way.

In addition, this option can be used as a "blank screen" screen
saver, by sending a blank screen to the monitor whenever activity
   ceases.

5.0 Power management states

In the terminology of VESA's DPMS Proposal, the power management states
have been defined as "On", "Stand-by", "Suspend", and "Off". "Stand-by"
mode is optional; i.e., not all monitors and VGA adapter cards support
this mode. These monitors then have only "Suspend" mode in addition to
"On" and "Off".

Monitor Green tries to determine whether your VGA card is capable of
handling all four modes or just three. If Monitor Green determines that
the card can handle only three modes, i.e., cannot signal "Stand-by"
mode, it will never use that mode. However, you can force Monitor Green to
implement the number of states you want by adding a parameter to the
command line. Use MGREEN/3 or MGREEN/4 to force Monitor Green to implement
three state transitions or four states, respectively.

Please note: If you use MGREEN/4 with a VGA card that is not capable of
four state transitions, when Monitor Green tries to signal to the display
to enter into "Stand-by" state, the display will jump into the "Off"
state incorrectly.

6.0 Changing time settings

The time settings tell Monitor Green how long a period of inactivity should
pass before entering a power saving state. To change the settings under
DOS, run MGCONFIG.EXE. Under Windows, just double-click the Monitor Green
Config icon.

If you have selected the RGB Detection operation option, only one time
setting may be entered. This setting tells Monitor Green how long of an
idle period to wait before clearing the screen.

If you have selected the VESA DPMS mode of operation, either three or
four state transitions that may be in effect (see Section 5.0). If
Monitor Green is implementing all four state transitions, the configuration
screen will allow you to enter idle period times for the STAND-BY,
SUSPEND, and OFF states. If Monitor Green is implementing only three state
transitions, the STAND-BY setting will not appear.

Please note that the time settings must be kept in ascending order, or
Monitor Green will not accept them. That is, the STAND-BY setting must be
less than or equal to the SUSPEND setting, and the latter setting must
be less than or equal to the OFF setting. Also, if you specify the same
value for two settings, Monitor Green will signal to the display to enter
into the higher power saving state when the computer has been idle for
this period of time. For example, if you specify a two-minute idle time
for both SUSPEND and OFF modes, Monitor Green will signal to the display to
enter into the OFF state when the computer has been idle for two
minutes.

7.0 Detecting mouse activities

You must load the mouse driver before loading MGREEN.EXE, or Monitor Green
will NOT detect any mouse activities.

8.0 TSR program MGREEN.EXE

This section contains information about TSR problems.

8.1 Loading MGREEN.EXE into high DOS memory

MGREEN.EXE can be loaded into the DOS Upper Memory Block (UMB) by using
DOS command LOADHIGH or QEMM386 LOADHI.COM or 386MAX 386LOAD.COM.

NOTE: If you have problems when MGREEN.EXE is loaded high, try loading
it in conventional memory.

8.2 Removing MGREEN.EXE from memory

Always remove TSRs in the reverse order that they loaded in, or
unpredictable behavior may result.

9.0 Using Monitor Green with other screen saver and power saver programs

If you are using a DOS screen saver program, you must remove it before
running Monitor Green. However, Windows screen saver programs may be run
at the same time as Monitor Green.

Do not use Monitor Green with other power saving programs, or you may
encounter a problem with the display not recovering from power saving
states.

10.0 Using Monitor Green with MS-Windows

This section contains information about using Monitor Green with MS-
Windows.

10.1 WIN.INI

When you install Monitor Green for use with MS-Windows, the installation
program will back up the original WIN.INI file to a file named WIN.MG.
It will then append the command C:\MGREEN\WMGREEN.EXE to the "load"
entry in the [windows] section of the file. (The directory name may be
different, depending on the directory name you specify during
installation).

10.2 Installing Monitor Green with a Windows shell other than Program
Manager

The Monitor Green installation program will create one program group which
contains two program items (WMGREEN.EXE and MGCONFIG.EXE) under Windows.

If you have trouble installing Monitor Green with a non-standard Windows
shell (other than Program Manager) there are three possible solutions:

1. Run MGSETUP.EXE under Windows to install the Windows portion of OPTI-
   GREEN manually.

2. Add WMGREEN.EXE and MGCONFIG.EXE to your Windows shell yourself, and
make WMGREEN.EXE run automatically whenever you start Windows.

3. If the above methods fail, run WMGREEN.EXE manually every time you
   start Windows.

10.3 Installing MS-Windows after Monitor Green

If you install Monitor Green and later install Windows, you must then re-
install Monitor Green.

10.4 Running MS-DOS based applications within Windows

Monitor Green works the same with an MS-DOS based application regardless of
whether you start it from the MS-DOS prompt, from Program Manager, or
from File Manager.

NOTE: Be sure to load MGREEN.EXE into memory before starting Windows.
Do not try to load it from the MS-DOS prompt.

11.0 Using Monitor Green with networks

This section contains information about using Monitor Green with networks.

11.1 Installing Monitor Green on file server networks

If you are installing Monitor Green on a file server network, take note of
these special considerations.

Monitor Green cannot be used directly by a file server machine; it only
works on workstations. Also, for every workstation which will use OPTI-
GREEN, you must install a unique copy of the program. The program
cannot be shared.

There are two ways to install Monitor Green on a file server network. The
first is to install Monitor Green on a local hard drive at each workstation
that will use it. The second method is to install Monitor Green on the
file server, in a different directory for each workstation. For
example, if five network workstations will use Monitor Green, you create
five directories on the file server, each with its own copy of OPTI-
GREEN. Please remember that you will need access rights on the server
to create the necessary files.

If you boot your workstation from a local drive, install Monitor Green on
your local hard drive and let the Monitor Green installation program modify
the AUTOEXEC.BAT file automatically. Alternatively, if your workstation
is a diskless workstation and you don't boot from a local drive, select
"Let you make the modification later" when the installation program asks
whether to modify AUTOEXEC.BAT for you. You will then need to remember
to run MGREEN.EXE manually every time you boot your workstation.

11.2 Installing Monitor Green on peer-to-peer networks

If you are installing Monitor Green with a peer-to-peer network, please
note the following:

1.You can install Monitor Green onto the server machine and workstations.

2.For every machine which will use Monitor Green, you must install a unique
copy of the program. Monitor Green cannot be shared.

12.0 Uninstalling Monitor Green

For the DOS portion, remove the line MGREEN.EXE from your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file if it exists. For the Windows portion, restore file WIN.INI from
its backup file (WIN.MG).

13.0 Starting a shell program (DOSSHELL, MS Windows, PCSHELL, etc.)
     within AUTOEXEC.BAT.

The only restriction is that the AUTOEXEC.BAT file must execute
MGREEN.EXE before executing the shell program.

Appendix A. Problems and possible solutions

Please check Section 1.0 Hardware and Software requirements first,
no matter which problem you encounter.

1. You receive error messages during the installation process.
Solution: Follow instructions on the screen and try it again. For
network users, please refer to Section 11.0 in this file.

2. The installation program fails to install the Windows portion of
Monitor Green.
Solution: Please refer to Sections 10.1 and 10.2 of this file.

3. Monitor Green turns on the monitor at an unexpected time.
Solution: Please refer to Section 9.0 of this file.

4. The monitor does not enter into a power saving state.
Solution: Be sure that you do not mark Disable power saving function.
Make sure that MGREEN.EXE is loaded in conventional memory and there is
no DOS screen saver program being used. In addition, for Windows users,
please refer to Sections 10.1. and 10.2 of this file.

5. The monitor enters into an incorrect power saving state.
Solution: Please refer to Sections 5.0 and 6.0 of this file.

6. The monitor does not recover from a power saving state.
Solution: Please refer to Sections 7.0 and 9.0 of this file. If the
problem still occurs under Windows, change the display driver to a
standard VGA driver.

7. You test a power saving state via the configuration panel, and
recovery fails when you press the <Space> or <Enter> keys.
Solution: The key which you press to have the display recover is not
removed from the keyboard buffer by Monitor Green. If you press <Enter>
when the display is in a power saving state, the display will change its
state to "ON", but the configuration program will receive this <Enter>
key too, and signal to the display to enter into power saving state
again. Just press any key other than <Enter> or <Space>.

8. WIN.INI is damaged.
Solution: Restore your WIN.INI file from its backup (WIN.MG), and
install Monitor Green again.

9. MGREEN.EXE tells you "Cannot remove OPTI-GREEN from memory" when you
   try to remove it.
Solution: Please refer to Section 8.2 of this file.

10. The message "OPTI-GREEN DOS TSR is not loaded" appears on the screen
    when you enter Windows.
Solution: Be sure that MGREEN.EXE is loaded in memory before you start
Windows.
