1. General Information
----------------------
This file contains information related to the use and installation of the 3Com internal telco return Cable Modem card. Some of the information contained in this file were not available at the time the manual was published and should supersed any information in the manual that came with the product. Please read this information carefully.

2. Using your Cable Modem with a NIC
-------------------------------------

Windows 9x specific:

If you want to simultaneously run the cable modem card and a network interface card (NIC) in your PC, you will need Win95B. The cable modem looks like a second NIC card and earlier versions of Win95 do not support multiple NICs. If you have an earlier version of Win95, you will need to remove or disable your NIC card before installing your Cable Modem.

If you have Win95B and decide to use the Cable Modem with a NIC, you must make sure that:
- either the Cable Modem is the default gateway to the Internet
- or the NIC is the default gateway to the Internet.

You may use the Windows utility "route.exe" to modify your default gateway settings.

After a Cable Modem connection is made, the CM will be made the default gateway and remain so even after the connection is terminated.

Windows NT specific:

Please uninstall Cable Shim from (Network Control Panel Applet)Services tab, before trying to install any new network cards or modems. This is necessary, otherwise the drivers may not be properly bound and may lead to not working of the Cable modem.

Install the other NIC or modem as the case maybe, then re install Cable shim.

3. Performance Enhancement
--------------------------

3.1 Removing Unnecessary protocol bindings

When installing the cable modem, all installed protocols such as IPX are automatically bound to the cable modem driver. To improve performance, you may remove all bindings from the cable modem driver except for TCP/IP. To do this click Start|Settings|Control Panel|Network. Click to select each protocol bound to the "3Com Inc., Downstream Cable Modem" EXCEPT TCP/IP and then click "Remove".

For example, to remove the IPX binding to the cable modem:

1. Click Start|Settings|Control Panel|Network
2. Click to select:
IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol->3Com Inc., Downstream Cable Modem
3. Click "Remove"

IMPORTANT: For the cable modem to operate, you MUST LEAVE the TCP/IP binding.

3.2 Turning off Upstream Error Control
On some PC's a significant throughput increase (up to 50%) may be possible by turning off upstream error control.

To turn off upstream error control:
1. Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, Dial Up Networking.
2. Right click on the "Cable Modem" icon and chose "Properties". A dialog box will appear.
3. Click the "Configure" button, another dialog box will appear.
4. Chose the "Connection" tab.
5. Click on the "Advanced" button.
6. Uncheck the "Use Error Control" option, (if not already unchecked).
7. Click OK three times.

The next time you dial using the cable modem, upstream error control will be turned off.

4. Troubleshooting Guide
------------------------

Problem:
--------
My computer went into ‘power save’ mode and when it came out, my screen was frozen.

Solution:
---------
In some computers, if the upstream (telco) connection is active when the computer goes into ‘power save’ mode, the computer will ‘hang’ when coming out of power save mode and must be restarted. If your computer has this problem, either hang-up the telco modem before your computer goes into ‘power save’ mode or disable ‘power save’ in your computer.

If you chose to disable power save, you should disable it in both Windows Control Panel and the BIOS setup. To disable it in Windows, go to Start|Settings|Control Panel|Power. To disable in the BIOS setup, usually you must hit a function key while booting to enter the setup menu. Consult your computer manual for exact instructions.

Problem:
--------
I installed the cable modem but it does not work.

Solution:
---------
During installation some computers assign IRQs which do not report a conflict but which are assigned to another device. This can occur especially if Windows has assigned the cable modem to one of the commonly used IRQs listed below:

IRQ 6	Usually assigned to floppy drive
IRQ 7	Usually assigned to the Parallel Port
IRQ 8	Usually assigned to the Real Time Clock
IRQ 12	Usually assigned to the PS/2 Mouse
IRQ 13	Usually assigned to the Math Co-processor
IRQ 14	Usually assigned to the Primary IDE Disk Controller
IRQ 15	Usually assigned to a Secondary IDE Disk Controller

To reassign the IRQ for the cable modem, go into Start|Settings|Control Panel|System and select the ‘Device Manger’ tab and select ‘View Devices by Type’. Scroll to the ‘Network Adapters’ icon and double click on it to see the ‘3Com Inc. Downstream Cable Modem’ icon. Double click the ‘3 Com Inc. Downstream Cable Modem’ icon.

On the displayed screen, select the ‘Resources’ tab and clear the ‘Use automatic settings’ check box. Double click the ‘Interrupt Request’ icon and select another interrupt which shows no conflict. Select ‘OK’ until you are back to the Windows desktop.

Problem:
--------
I clicked on the "Connect" icon but it did not dial the phone.

Solution:
---------
Select Start|Program|Accessories|Dial-Up Networking, check if there is a "Cable Modem" dial-up networking icon. If the "Cable Modem" icon is not found, CMCC is not able to create it programmatically and you need to do it manually. To create the "Cable Modem" dial-up networking manually, do the following steps:

* Select Start|Program|Accessories|Dial-Up Networking,
* double click "Make New Connection",
* type "Cable Modem" as the name,
* type in ANY area code and phone number,
* click "Finish",
* right click on the newly created "Cable Modem" icon,
* select properties, make sure PPP is the Dial-Up server type and TCP/IP the network protocol,
* For TCP/IP settings, check "Server assigned IP address", "Server assigned name server address" and "Use IP header compression",
* Do NOT check "use default gateway on remote network".
