Lucnt141.EXE - 2/14/97

Description:
------------
Lucnt141.EXE provides modem driver version 1.41 for HP Pavilion models
7295V, 5315, 5315D, 7310, 7320, 7330Z, 7335, 7350P, 7360, 7360P, and 7370V
only.

Lucnt141.EXE is a self extracting file used to create a startup disk
containing all files necessary to install this version of the driver.

Installation Process:
---------------------
1. After downloading Lucnt141.EXE, disconnect your on-line connection
   to free the modem.

2. Use Windows Explorer to locate Lucnt141.EXE and move it to an empty
   or temp directory.

3. Format a bootable floppy diskette.
   a. Insert a blank floppy diskette into drive A: and double click
       on My Computer.
   b. Right mouse click on the A: drive, choose Format
   c. Under Format type, select Full.
   d. Under Other options, place a checkmark alongside Copy system files
   e. Click Start and wait for the format to complete.

4. From within the directory you downloaded the file to, double-click
on Lucnt141.EXE file to expand the files. After the opening screen, you
are prompted with a dialog box requesting a destination directory. Use
the 'A:\' default to expand files to the floppy you just formatted.

5. Remove your current modem from the systems configuration:
   a. From the Start Menu, select Settings - Control Panel
   b. From the Control Panel window, double-click on Modems
   c. If not already highlighted, click on your AT&T modem entry
   d. Click the Remove button.

6. When you are ready to perform the upgrade, boot the system from
the floppy disk created in Steps 3 & 4. The update process is automatic
and you will be prompted when to remove the floppy and reboot.

7. Once these steps have been completed and verified, you may
go back to the directory where you downloaded Lucnt141.EXE and
delete it. You should keep the floppy you created as you will need it
should you ever restore your system using the Recovery CD.

Determining your current modem revision.
---------------------------------------
To determine your current modem revision, perform the following:
1 On the taskbar, select Start/Settings/Control Panel.
2 When the Control Panel window opens, double-click on Modems.
3 Click on the Diagnostics tab.
4 Click on the COM port entry that represents your modem. Most likely,
   this will be COM2.
5 Click More Info.
6 The modem's parameters are returned, and the ATI5 parameter contains
three numbers separated by commas. The first of these three numbers
is your current modem driver revision.

Requirements for the patch
--------------------------
To successfully install this patch, files are updated in the C:\Windows and
C:\Windows\System directory. In addition, masters are updated in your
C:\Windows\Options\Cabs directory. If you relocated or removed this
C:\Windows\Options\Cabs directory, the patch will fail.

Other notes
-----------
1. This patch functions differently depending on the model it runs on.
Operation for the 7295V is slightly different than all other models
in that the modem's firmware is also updated. The following
paragraphs provide some background information for those interested:

The modem card included with the 7295V requires two interrupt channels
(or IRQs) for operation: IRQ 3 for standard COM port communication, and
either IRQ 10 or 9 depending upon whether any PCI cards are installed
in your machine. This is true for both Windows and DOS operation. This
additional IRQ is used for DMA transfers between the modem and driver,
and is primarily used only during video applications.

This updated 1.41 driver consolidates both these functions to a single
IRQ freeing up one IRQ for the Windows environment. Your PC will now
have an additional IRQ available should you ever need it for installing
additional hardware options. In the DOS environment, two IRQs are
still required when using the DOS driver (LEPNPTSR.EXE).

Since the new driver uses a single IRQ under Windows, the modem needs to
be reconfigured to request only one IRQ during the Plug-and-Play startup
procedures that occur each time the system is turned on. This patch
automatically reflashes a small ROM on the modem card so this change
takes place automatically for now on.

The side effect of this change is that its non-reversible. That is,
should you ever restore your system using your Recovery CD, you will
be reinstalling your original modem driver. Since the modem's firmware
will now only request one IRQ, it will not work properly with the old
modem driver that expected two IRQs. Simply remember that if you restore
your system using your Recovery CD, reapply this patch using the floppy
you created in this procedure. You may wish to store this floppy with
     your Recovery CD.

IRQ Details: Since the modem is configured for COM2 by default, the
standard IRQ used for Input/Output is IRQ 3. Under Windows, IRQ 3 is
now the only IRQ required for all modem applications. Under DOS, in
order for the modem to operate, the DOS modem driver, LEPNPTSR.EXE must
be loaded in the Autoexec.BAT file. This is automatically accomplished
when the computer is restarted in MS-DOS mode. When entering this mode,
Windows 95 uses information stored in the C:\Windows\Exit To Dos.PIF
file to create Config.SYS and Autoexec.BAT files specifically for
MS-DOS mode. The original Config.SYS and Autoexec.BAT files are
restored when you return to Windows mode.

During this upgrade, C:\Windows\Exit To Dos.PIF is updated to reflect
a change for MS-DOS mode. The new command line for LEPNPTSR.EXE is:
LEPNPTSR.EXE /Ix where x is the second IRQ to use. In Exit To DOS.PIF
IRQ 4 is specified, meaning that IRQ 3 is used for standard I/O (since
the modem is located at COM2) and IRQ 4 is assigned as the second.
The side effect of this is that other devices using IRQ 4 (such as
serial devices connected to COM1 or COM3) cannot be used at the same
     time).

This change makes the 7295V modem perform the same as all 73xx models.

2. Patch floppies formatted on the 7295V can not be used on 53xx or 73xx
machines and visa versa. The operating system on the 7295V is an
earlier revision of Windows 95 and if this is booted on a 5300 or
7300 machine, drive C: will not be recognized.

   The 7295V uses Microsoft's OSR0 while 5300 and 7300 systems use OSR2.
There was a significant change in the disk formats and core operating
system code uses between these revisions and accounts for why
software on your boot floppy must match the software on your hard
   drive.
