1) XEM5600 CHARACTERISTICS
   =======================

This release of the Xircom 10/100 Network & 56K Modem PC Card
   supports the following features:

-XEM5600 provides Integrated Ethernet, modem and telephone
    pass-thru connectors.

-Auto-negotiation of either 10Mbps or 100Mbps Ethernet networks
    with simultaneous modem connections.

-Full suite of network driver support - Allows 10Mbps or
100Mbps connections across a wide range of operating systems
and networks, including native 32-bit NDIS3 driver support for
    Windows 95 and Windows NT.

-56K modem technology which allows access to information and
e-mail on corporate networks, the Internet, and other online
services at speeds up to 56Kbps over standard phone lines. K56
technology enables speeds up to 56Kbps when data is
    downloaded.
Upstream data sent from the user travels at the standard V.34
rate. The modems at both ends of the connection must support
56K protocols (V.90/K56Flex) in order to achieve 56Kbps
    speeds.

-Please see the Xircom Web site (http://www.xircom.com) for the
latest modem software for your XEM5600.

-SNMP network management agent - Allows portable PC's to be
managed using SNMP-based network management software.

-HotSwap support - Supports easy replacement of one card with
another while power is on, as well as the ability to
    gracefully disconnect from the network.

   Supported Environments
   ----------------------

The following driver types are included with this release:

-NDIS3 Driver for Microsoft Windows NT (Ver. 3.51, 4.0),
    Windows 95, and Windows 98 (CEM56.SYS)
-NDIS4 Driver for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Windows
    95 (OSR2), and Windows 98 (CEM56N4.SYS)

or Phoenix Card and Socket Services (CEM56NT.SYS)
   -Modem test program (MDMTESTW.EXE)

   Features
   --------

The following features are available in this release:

   -Automatic NDIS Driver Selection

This driver release now supports automatic NDIS version
selection for installs under Windows 9x.

NDIS switching is not supported in Windows NT 4.0. The NDIS4
driver will be installed by default by pointing to the root
of the CD or of Disk 1 if diskettes are created. The NDIS3
driver may be installed by pointing to the \NDIS3
    subdirectory.

    Known Limitations
    -----------------

-In order to achieve 56Kbps connects (V.90 or K56flex), there
can be only one digital to analog conversion between the
connecting modems. Also, the modems at both ends of the call
must be 56K compatible to achieve 56K speeds; otherwise a
standard V.34 connection (maximum 33.6Kpbs) will be
negotiated. Current FCC regulations limit download speeds of
     the modem to 53Kbps.

-Full-duplex Ethernet transmission is only supported on 10Mbps
networks. This feature is only available when the Adapter is
connected to switched full-duplex 10Mbps Ethernet hubs.

-In order to connect to a 100Base-TX Ethernet network,
Category 5 unshielded twisted pair (UTP) network cable
terminating in a male RJ-45 connector must be connected
to a 100Mbps hub or switch. Check with your LAN
Administrator if you are not certain of your network speed
     and infrastructure.

-Under OEM Service Release Version 2 of Win95 (OSR2), the
multi-function parent device may be displayed under the
Modem category in addition to the modem device. The modem
     device string is:
"Modem of Xircom 10-100+56". The other device listed
     represents the parent multifunction device.

-Using Windows NT 4.0 with Microsoft Service Pack 1 may cause
some portable PCs to lock up on Shutdown or Restart. Updating
to Microsoft Service Pack 3 or later resolves this issue.

-When installing on some notebooks under Windows NT 4.0 with
Microsoft Service Pack 4, a library procedure error
associated with the GetPCMCIAConfig procedure may be
encountered. If this occurs, it is advised to update to
a later Service Pack version or return to Service Pack 3.

-In Windows 95 or Windows 98, the XEM5600 may in some cases
install the modem on COM5. Some applications may not be able
to access the modem in such cases. If you encounter this
situation, you should be able to correct it and move the
modem to a conventional COM port location (COM1 through
COM4) via one of the methods described below:

     Solution 1

If your computer contains an Infra-red serial port or a
standard serial port that is not being used, disable this
device in both the computer's system BIOS and in Windows
     via the Device Manager.
Then reboot the computer. In many cases, Windows will then
re-assign the modem to the resources that are now open
(typically I/O address 02F8, COM2) and the situation will
     be corrected.

     Solution 2

If you are unable to disable such devices or Windows fails
to re-assign the port used, try the following:

     1. Go to the Device Manager. Locate the "Multifunction
Parent" device entry for the XEM5600 (this may be located
in either the Modems group or the Multifunction Adapters
        group). Double click this entry.

     2. Click the Resources tab. Uncheck the box labeled "Use
        Automatic Settings".

     3. Note the Basic Configuration number the adapter is
assigned to (in most cases this will be 0000). Choose a
different Basic Configuration number to assign the modem
to the port desired according to the following scheme:

        Basic Configuration 0005 - I/O address 03E8, COM3
        Basic Configuration 0006 - I/O address 02F8, COM2
        Basic Configuration 0007 - I/O address 03F8, COM1

We have found the first choice (0005, 03E8, COM3) to be
the best selection in most instances.

     4. Once the new configuration is selected, click OK. A
warning message will be displayed indicating you have
made manual changes and asking if you wish to continue.
Click Yes. After a few seconds, the modem will be
assigned to the new settings and the problem should be
        corrected.

-On some computers running Windows NT 4.0, if NT networking
functionality has not already been installed, lockup and/or
"blue screen" symptoms may be encountered when installing the
XEM5600 adapter along with networking. This has been
observed primarily on computers that support CardBus. The
following workarounds for this situation have been found to
     be successful:

     Solution 1

Perform the installation of Windows NT networking WITHOUT the
XEM5600 adapter in the computer. Assign resources
that are appropriate for your computer. Once the installation
process has completed, shut down the computer and insert the
XEM5600 adapter in the computer and then reboot.

     Solution 2

When initially installing networking, choose the "MS Loopback
Adapter" from the adapter list instead of installing the
XEM5600 at this time. Once networking is installed, reboot
the computer, remove the "MS Loopback Adapter" from the
configuration, and install the XEM5600 according to the
     instructions in your User's Guide.

     Solution 3

In some cases, it is necessary to install the XEM5600
while installing networking for the purposes of joining a
Domain. This is true in the case of an unattended
installation to an NT domain server. In such cases,
Xircom recommends obtaining an updated version of
PCMCIA.SYS from Microsoft. At the time of this publication
this file could be obtained via ftp at the following URL:

     ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/usa/nt40/
     hotfixes-postSP3/pcm-fix/

You can also use the PCMCIA.SYS file from another computer
that has Service Pack 3 or later installed.

Rename the existing PCMCIA.SYS located in the
     \I386 directory.
Copy the updated version to the \I386 directory.

In a case in which Windows NT has already been installed but
networking has not and the need exists to join a domain in
this manner, overwrite the PCMCIA.SYS file that currently
exists in the \%systemroot%\system32\drivers directory with
the new one. You should then be able to install the XEM5600
     while installing networking without difficulty.

-PCMCIA adapters may feel hot to the touch after prolonged
periods of normal use in some environments. This is normal
and is not known to affect operation of the Xircom card, the
host computer, or any other peripheral device. However, to
avoid discomfort, use caution when removing the card from
your computer after extended use (see your computer manual
     for removal procedures).

    Other Notes
    -----------

-Documentation regarding unattended installations of Windows
NT 4.0 is no longer included in this release. Please
download 'XIRCUNAT.EXE' from the utilities section on
Xircom's web site at www.xircom.com for information
     concerning such procedures.

4) CARD AND SOCKET SERVICES IN WINDOWS NT 4.0
   ==========================================

With this release, full functionality with several types of
Windows NT third-party Card and Socket Services software is
   now available. Supported packages include:

Phoenix CardExecutive versions 2.18 and above
   Softex versions 2.18 and above
SystemSoft CardWizard versions 4.0 and above

The following items and instructions are pertinent when
   installing in these environments:

-If Windows NT Service Pack 4 is installed, the file NDIS.SYS
(located in the WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS directory) may need to
be replaced with the NDIS.SYS file included with either
Service Pack 3, or a later Service Pack should be used.
This is known to be an issue with SystemSoft Card Wizard.

-The Phoenix CardExecutive and Softex packages require the use
of a special set of drivers for the Xircom adapter. These
drivers are located in the \CEMNT subdirectory on the Xircom
CD-ROM. The installation procedure for these drivers differs
somewhat from the standard Windows NT installation procedure
described in the Xircom help documents.

To install the adapter with Phoenix CardExecutive or Softex,
    perform the following steps:

Caution: Do not insert the Xircom CD-ROM until instructed to
    do so in step 3.

    1. With Windows NT 4.0 running, connect cables and insert the
Xircom 10/100 Network + 56K Modem PC Card into the PC Card
slot. The "PCMCIA Card Not Configured" screen will appear.

the driver that was provided with the PC Card" and click OK.
The "Path Not Found" screen will appear.
    3. When the "Path Not Found" screen appears, insert the Xircom
CD-ROM and type the path to the \CEMNT directory (for example,
    D:\CEMNT). Click OK.
    4. The Xircom Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 for Softex - Properties
window will display default network and modem settings. Click
    Continue.
    5. The "PCMCIA Configuration Complete" screen will appear.
Click OK. Restart the computer by clicking Yes if prompted,
or by clicking Start, Shut Down, Restart.
    6. When Windows NT restarts, click Start, Settings, Control
Panel, and double-click the Modems icon.
    7. At the Install New Modem screen, the "Don't detect my
    modem"
item should NOT be checked. Click Next.
    8. Windows NT will detect the Xircom modem as a Standard
    Modem.
    Click Change.
    9. On the screen showing Manufacturers and Models, click Have
    disk.
    10. On the "Install from Disk" screen, type the path to the
\CEMNT directory on the Xircom CD-ROM (for example, D:\CEMNT)
    and click OK.

Xircom 10-100+56" is selected, then click OK.
    12. On the Install New Modem screen verifying the selection,
click Next, and on the following screen, click Finish.
    13. On the Modems Properties screen, click Dialing Properties
to set up dialing properties (not necessary if a modem has
been previously installed), then click Close.
    14. Use Start/Run to run SETUP.EXE from the Xircom CD-ROM.
Xircom utilities and online documentation will be copied to
your hard drive and installed under Start/Programs/Xircom
    Utilities.
    15. Restart the computer by clicking Yes if prompted, or by
    clicking Start, Shut Down, Restart.

After Windows reloads, Xircom CountrySelect software will
launch. Select the country from which you are calling, or
select "United States or Canada" (default) and click Save.

5) WINDOWS 2000 INSTALLATION CORRECTIONS
   =====================================

Under Windows 2000 the Xircom 10/100 Network + 56K Modem may
install as a Standard PCMCIA Card Modem if the installation
instructions are not followed. To correct these types of
installations, please perform the following steps:

From CD-ROM drive, run S.Exe and install Xircom Software and
Tools, or if from floppy disk, run Setup.exe from Disk2.
Choose defaults unless your drive is partitioned and the drive
letter needs to be changed. You will be prompted to restart
your machine. While the machine is restarting, the Found New
Hardware Wizard should appear, finding the Multifunction,
Modem and Network Devices. The Xircom Modem Test and
Registration may appear, these utilities should be cancelled
until your Xircom adapter finishes installing properely.

Should the Found New Hardware Wizard not appear, simply remove
and reinsert your Xircom 10/100 Network + 56K Modem with
Windows 2000 running. The Found New Hardware Wizard should
   then start.

6) V.90 CONFIGURATION AND USE INFORMATION - S109 REGISTER
   ======================================================

Current released firmware for Xircom 56K modem products now
includes support for the V.90 56K modem standard. This
firmware is designed to initially attempt to make a V.90
connection, and then fall back to K56flex if the host
being dialed does not support V.90. However, the host
being dialed must support V.90 autodetect in order for
a V.90 connection to be initiated by default. At this
point in time some V.90 hosts do not yet support autodetect.
In such cases it will be necessary to issue an ATS109=2
command to the modem in order to force a V.90 connection.

Please note that if this command is used and a V.90 connection
is not achieved the modem will fall back directly to V.34.
When S109=2,fallback from V.90 to K56Flex is disabled.
To set this value back to the default, issue an ATS109=1
   command.

In summary, the values of this register and the resultant
   behavior are:

S109=1 (default) - Negotiates initially at V.90 if host
                      supports V.90 autodetect.
                      If host does not support
V.90 autodetect or does not support V.90 at
all, will negotiate back to K56flex.
S109=2 - Forces V.90 for PCM connects. If host does
not support V.90, falls directly back to
		      V.34.

Changing the value of the S109 register can be implemented via
   the following means:

-When using a terminal emulator program, enter ATS109=n
(where n is the value desired).
-To implement with Windows 95/98/NT dial up networking,
go to Control Panel\Modems. Highlight the Xircom modem
and click Properties. Click Connection\Advanced. Enter
S109=n (where n is the value desired) in the Extra
    Settings box.

7) CREATING A DISK INSTALL
   =======================

If you need a diskette version of the software for installation
on a system without a CD-ROM, the CD-ROM includes three
directories DISK1 and DISK2 which contain files that can
be copied to diskettes. This can be done manually or by running
MAKEDISK.BAT. DISK1 and DISK2 include the files necessary for
   Windows 95, 98 and NT 4.0. (NDIS3 drivers only).

8) MACHINE SPECIFIC NOTES

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
