	How to Install PCtel HSP Modems on Windows NT Workstation 4.0


ii. Nonpnp/PCI modem installation

    1. Open "Control Panel" and click on the "Ports" CPL.

    2. Double click the "Add" button and set to available I/O base address
and IRQ. Make sure there is no hardware resource conflicts. You can use 
"Windows NT Diagnostics" in the Administrative Tools to browse resources. 

    3. Go to "Control Panel" and click on the "Modems".

    4. Add a new modem from the "MDMCHPIV.INF" file(HSP 56K PCI MICRO MODEM) on the driver disk and
attach the modem to the port that you have just added.

    5. When Windows NT finishes the modem setup, return to the "Control Panel".
On the menu bar, click "View" and then click "Refresh".
    
    6. Go to "Control Panel" and click on the "PCtel Port".

    7. Choose the port attached your modem and click OK.

    8. Restart the computer. 


iii. PCMCIA modem installation

    1. Insert the modem into the computer.
    2. Turn on the computer.
    3. Go to the "Control Panel" and select "PC CARD (PCMCIA)". Select the
your PCMCIA modem and click on the "Properties" button.
    4. Open the "Resources" property sheet. Write down the "Interrupt 
Request" and "Input/Output Range" settings assigned to the modem (The IRQ 
and I/O address will be used later in the installation).
    5. Click on the "Ports" in the "Control Panel".
    6. Click "Add" button to add a port and use the I/O resources you wrote 
down in step 4 for the new COM port. When finished, click "OK".  (NOTE: 
You may see a message saying to restart Windows for the new COM port 
changes to take effect.  If this happens, click "Don't Restart Now!")
    7. Return to the "Control Panel" and select the 'Modem'.
    8. Add a modem and do not allow Windows to detect the modem.
    9. Under "Install New Modem", click "Have Disk" button.
    10. Insert your Windows NT Modem Installation Diskette into the floppy   
drive and click 'OK'.
    11. Select the 'HSP PCMCIA MODEM' from the modem list and click "OK".
    12. At the next screen, attach the modem to the COM port you created in 
step 6, then click "next".
    13. When Windows NT finishes the modem setup, return to the "Control Panel".
On the menu bar, click "View" and then click "Refresh".
    14. Within the "Control Panel", select the "PCtel Port".
    15. Select the COM port attached to your modem and the click "OK".
    16. Remove the modem from the computer.
    17. Shut down your computer.
    18. After your computer has been shut down, reinsert the modem into the 
computer, then turn the computer back on.

Note: If Windows NT does not detect your PCMCIA modem, check if the PCMCIA
socket service works properly.

iv. Uninstall Pctel HSP Modem

    1. Go to "Control Panel" and click on "PCtel Port" CPL.

    2. Click on "Uninstall" button.

    3. Answer "Yes" to the modem you want to delete.

    4. Go to the "Windows NT/Inf" directory. Delete the OEM*.INF and 
OEM*.PNF files the Pctel modem used.
    
    5. Restart the computer. 

Note:
    If Windows NT does not copy files during the installation, please
goto "Windows NT/Inf" directory and delete unused "oem*.inf" and "oem*.pnf"
files, then try again.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
