NETGEAR FA310TX Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter
-----------------------------------------
Driver Installation for Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98
-----------------------------------------------------------
Getting Started
---------------
Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98 does not come bundled with the driver
for the NETGEAR FA310TX adapter. You must go through the following
procedure to install the device driver into the Windows 95 or Windows 98
system for the adapter to function properly.
The Windows 95 or Windows 98 installation disks or CD are needed to
complete this installation.
Installation Procedure
----------------------
1. Shut down the computer and install the FA310TX adapter into the
system.
2. Start your system normally. Upon power up, the system will indicate
to you that new hardware has been found and the "Add New Hardware
Wizard" window will appear.
3. Click the Next button as the Wizard prompting "This wizard searches
for new drivers for PCI Ethernet Controller".
4. Choose the "Serach for the best driver for your device" option, then
click Next.
5. Insert the NETGEAR FA310TX driver disk.
6. Select the "Floppy disk drivers" and click Next.
7. The wizard shows the NETGEAR FA310TX Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter.
Click the Next button. The system will copy the driver files
from the FA310TX driver disk. At this monent, Windows 95/98 will
also copy the necessary files from the Windows 95/98 CD-ROM.
Prepare your Windows 95/98 CD-ROM or diskettes for this process.
8. After finishing file copying, click the Finish button. The Windows
system will ask you for rebooting the system. Select YES to reboot.
Advanced Setup
--------------
The FA310TX driver configures the adapter card to operate in autosensing
mode by default. In this mode, the card automatically selects the most
appropriate operating speed and duplex mode. There might be instances
when you need to configure the adapter card to operate at a particular
speed and duplex mode. The following procedure guides you into the
Windows 95 or Windows 98 system for this setting.
1. In Control Panel, open "Network".
2. Click on the "NETGEAR FA310TX Fast Ethernet Adapter" selection and
click on the "Properties" button.
3. Click on the "Advanced" tab in the FA310TX adapter card window.
4. Click on the "Connection Type" property selection.
5. The "Value" windows will show the following possible selections:
AutoSense
10Base-T (Ethernet)
10Base-T Full duplex
100Base-TX (Fast Ethernet)
100Base-TX Full duplex
Choose the appropriate setting as needed.
Troubleshooting
---------------
1. Symptom: No error appears in Device Manager and the NETGEAR FA310TX
driver is properly intalled. But you still have difficulty browsing
and locating other systems on the network.
Solution:
a. Check and make sure that you have a unique computer name for each
system in the whole network. All systems in the same local
network should use the same workgroup name. You can change your
computer name and workgroup name in:
"My Computer" -> "Control Panel" -> "Network" -> "Identification"
b. Check and make sure that the adapter is properly connected to a
network device (eg. HUB) and the "connection type" for this adapter
is set to "AutoSense" or the correct connection type. You can
check it in:
"My Computer" -> "Control Panel" -> "Network" -> "Properties"
Select the "Advanced" tab to modify the operating speed or duplex
mode.
Possible selections are: Autosense, 10Base-T, 10Base-T full_duplex,
100Base-TX, 100Base-TX full_duplex.
Explanation of Advanced Parameters
----------------------------------
Burst Length
------------
Programmable burst length. Indicates the Maximum number of
longwords to be transferred in one DMA transaction. Changing
this parameter may affect the device performance. The more
Longwords per burst the better the adapter performance will
be. The default should be used whenever possible.
=====================================================================
In Windows 95/98, parameters with the (32 bit) suffix are used by the
protected mode (NDIS 3/4) drivers. Parameters with the (16 bit)
suffix are used by the real mode NDIS 2 driver.
=====================================================================
Connection type (32-bit)
------------------------
Choose the connection/media type you would
like to use, or NONE for preprogrammed card's
default.
Full/Half duplex (16-bit) and Speed 10M/100M (16-bit)
------------------------- -----------------------
These two parameters choose the connection type of NDIS 2
real mode driver.
Connection type (32-bit) Full/Half duplex Speed 10M/100M (16-bit)
------------------------ -------------------------------------------
"AUTOSENSE" "AUTOSENSE" -------
"10Base-T half duplex" "Half Duplex" "10BaseT"
"10Base-T full duplex" "Full Duplex" "10BaseT"
"100Base-TX half duplex" "Half Duplex" "100BaseTx"
"100Base-TX full duplex" "Full Duplex" "100BaseTx"
Network Address
---------------
Specifies the IEEE Ethernet address to be used by the
Adapter. Setting this parameter will override the value
specified in the serial ROM on the adapter card.
Transmit Threshold
------------------
Controls the transmit threshold of the MAC controller. The
MAC controller starts transmitting data after the data
read from the Host computer to the FIFO at the controller
exceeds the threshold. The smaller the threshold the better
the transmitting performance is. However, a smaller threshold
will cause the adpater card to access the PCI bus more often.
As a result, it increases the possibility of transmitter FIFO
under-run. In some machines it could cause many packets to be
lost.
Download Driver Pack
After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.
Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).
If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.
Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.
Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.
From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.
Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
