Driver support for Windows 9x has been improved. Driver support for Windows 2000 has been added. 4) KNOWN LIMITATIONS ================= -With Windows 98, if the PGENET10 adapter is disabled or removed using Device Manager, the LED will remain on until the machine is restarted. -With Windows 2000, if a PGENET10 is attached to a second, cascaded USB hub and the first USB hub is hot swapped, the system will stop responding and need to be restarted. -If a PortGear USB Serial product has been installed, but is not currently attached, the communication port(s) remain assigned to that product. If a second PortGear Serial product is installed, the communication ports are incremented above the previously assigned port(s). -Under Windows 95 OSR2.x and Windows NT 4.0, after installing the PGENET10 you must "Add" the adapter using the Network applet in Control Panel. -Under Windows NT 4.0, after adding the PGENET10, or after a Suspend/Resume event the PC must be re-started before the adapter will function correctly. -Under Windows 98SE with the PGUNET, when Internet Connection Sharing is installed on a Client machine, an error is generated indicating that a networking adapter was not found. See The Troubleshooting section for workaround instructions. -The PGENET10 fails to make a network connection when used with a Compaq HB3320 12-Port Dual Speed Hub, SMC TigerStack II 10/100 MSC5900, or Accton CheetaHub Power-3016A. -HP Scanjet 6100 and IICX scanners, and Archive SCSI tape drives do not work with the PGMFHUB and PGSCSI. -Windows NT 4.0 is only supported with the PGENET10. For device compatibility information please visit the Xircom website at www.xircom.com. 5) TROUBLESHOOTING =============== Workaround for PGUNET Internet Connection Sharing error ------------------------------------------------------------------ After the Server machine is configured, note the IP address which is being used for the Internet connection, then use the following procedure to configure the PortGear USB to Ethernet Adapter's TCP/IP settings on the Client machine. 1. Set up each Client machine that will connect to the Server machine with a valid static IP address in the same subnet as the Server. For example, if the Server's IP address is 192.168.0.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, then you must assign each client a unique IP address between 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.254. 2. The Primary Gateway needs to be set to the IP address of the Server machine, in this case 192.168.0.1. 3. For DNS, use any valid DNS server information. Usually this will be the same as what is used on the Server machine. Locating the port to connect the PortGear product ------------------------------------------------------------------ The PortGear product connects to your computer via the USB port. To find the USB port, look for the USB symbol on the side, rear or front of your computer. You can also connect the PortGear product to a USB hub connected to your computer. If you cannot find a port featuring the USB symbol, consult your computer documentation for USB port availability and support. What to do if the PortGear product is not detected ------------------------------------------------------------------ If your PortGear product is not detected by the operating system, here are a few things you should check: Is USB Support enabled? ----------------------- If your computer features a USB port, in all likelihood your computer supports USB. However, USB support may not be enabled in the system setup program (also called BIOS). Verify that USB support is enabled in the BIOS. Consult your computer documentation for instructions. Is Plug & Play BIOS enabled? ---------------------------- Newer computers feature a Plug and Play ready BIOS. Verify that Plug & Play BIOS is enabled in the BIOS if using Windows 95 or 98. Consult your computer documentation for instructions. Microsoft recommends setting Plug and Play to "Disabled" or "No" if using Windows 2000. See Microsoft article Q252420. NOTE: If while in the computer setup program you come across a setting for Legacy Mode for USB devices, we recommend that you not change this setting. This feature is related to providing USB support at boot time for USB keyboards and mice. This feature has no effect on your PortGear product. Does your version of Windows support USB? ----------------------------------------- Refer to the operating system compatibility section for information on support for your operating system: Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows 2000. Operating system compatibility ------------------------------ Windows 95 The original version of Windows 95 does not contain native support for USB. Depending on when you originally bought your computer or installed Windows 95, you may or may not have a version of Windows 95 capable of USB support. Supported Windows 95 versions include 4.00.950B or 4.00.950C (these are technically referred to as OSR2.x). To verify the version of your operating system, do the following: 1.Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel. 2.Double-click the System icon. If your version is not 4.00.950B or 4.00.950C, please contact your computer manufacturer or Microsoft for an update. Microsoft provides a USB Supplement to enable USB support for Windows 95 (versions 4.00.950B or 4.00.950C). This supplement is not installed as part of a regular installation of Windows 95. It is located in a folder on your Windows 95 (OSR2) compact disc. To determine if USB support is enabled for Windows 95, do the following: 1. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click the System icon. 3. Select the Device Manager tab. 4. Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers item. You should see both Host Controller and USB Root Hub items. If either of these items appear with an "x" or exclamation point "!", contact your computer manufacturer for assistance. If you do not see these items, you must install the USB Supplement. To install the USB Supplement, do the following: 1. On the Windows 95 (OSR2) compact disc, locate the folder <CD Drive>:\OSR2\USBSUPP (where <CD Drive>: is your compact disc drive). 2. Double-click USBSUPP.EXE and follow any on screen prompts. The next time you start Windows 95 a dialog box will appear indicating that new hardware has been found. Follow the instructions outlined in the Windows 95 Software Installation section of the Setup Guidelines. Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Windows 98 and Windows 2000 provide native USB support. No updates are necessary. Follow the instructions outlined in the Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Software Installation section of the Setup Guidelines. To determine if USB support is operating normally for Windows 98, do the following: 1. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click the System icon. 3. Select the Device Manager tab. 4. Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers item. Both Host Controller and USB Root Hub items are present and confirm USB support. If either of these items appear with an "x" or exclamation point "!", contact the computer manufacturer for assistance. To determine if USB support is operating normally for Windows 2000, do the following: 1. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click the System icon. 3. Select the Hardware tab. 4. Click Device Manager. 5. Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers item. Both Host Controller and USB Root Hub items are present and confirm USB support. If either of these items appear with an "x" or exclamation point "!", contact the computer manufacturer for assistance. Using USB Viewer to check your Windows 98 USB setup Included on your Windows 98 compact disc is a program called USB Viewer for inspecting your current USB setup. USB Viewer is part of a technical reference package called the Sample Resource Kit. To install the Windows 98 Sample Resource Kit, do the following: 1. On the Windows 98 compact disc, locate the folder <CD Drive>:\TOOLS\RESKIT(where <CD Drive> is the letter of your compact disc drive). 2. Double-click SETUP.EXE and follow any on screen prompts. To use USB Viewer: 1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Windows 98 Resource Kit, and then click Tools Management Console. 2. Select the U to Z item under Tools A to Z. 3. Double-click USB Viewer. 6) MACHINE SPECIFIC NOTES ====================== Toshiba Satellite 330CDT and Satellite 440CDT --------------------------------------------- While using the PGENET10 to transfer large amounts of data the network connection may be lost. Acer TravelMate 330 Series -------------------------- The PGENET10 fails to function on these machines with Windows NT 4.0. This is a machine BIOS issue. Dell Dimension XPS T500 & 600 and Gateway Performance 500 --------------------------------------------------------- These computers hang at the BIOS splash screen when the PGSDB9 serial adapter is connected. Both of these machines utilize the Intel 440BX chipset in conjunction with Phoenix BIOS. 7) XIRCOM CUSTOMER SUPPORT ======================= To obtain customer support for your Xircom product, please call or send a facsimile to the appropriate number listed below.
