* Eight-character maximum for the Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation directory name (if you want to store the Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation files in a directory other than the default directory)

NOTE: For more information, see "Known Issues" found later in this document.

NOTE: Do not install Dell Open Manage Client into a directory where another application is installed or files already exist. When Dell Open Manage Client is uninstalled, the uninstallation process will delete the entire directory where the software currently resides. For example do not install to Dell Open Manage Client to C:\Windows if your windows installation is installed in C:\Windows, because the C:\Windows directory will be deleted upon uninstall.

NOTE: OMCI 5.1 supports Windows 2000 and the WMI/WBEM core version 1.5. Version 1.5 supports Unicode, which supports worldwide use of the WMI/WBEM components.

If your company has standardized on the WMI/WBEM core version 1.1, please use the OMCI 5.0 release for this support.

Examples:
1. Windows 2000 new and factory installs will already have the new 1.5 core. Use OMCI 5.1.
2. Windows 2000 Beta releases will need to be upgraded to the 1.5 core. Use OMCI 5.1.
3. Windows NT 4.x, Windows 9.x or if you are standardized on the 1.1 core, use OMCI 5.0.
4. If you should upgrade to the 1.5 WMI/WBEM core, uninstall OMCI 5.0 before upgrading. Use the OMCI 5.1 after the upgrade.

Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation 5 installation takes approximately 10 minutes to complete, depending on your system's resources.

Perform the following steps to complete the installation:
1. Insert diskette 1 into the 3.5-inch diskette drive.
2. Click Start, click Run, and then type the following command:

Monitor Information
-------------------
Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation reports monitor resolution information on data display channel (DDC)-compliant systems that run Windows 95 or Windows 98. The system monitor and video card must be DDC-compliant (DDC-compliant video cards have a blue connector). All Dell monitors shipped after January 1996 are DDC-compliant, except the D1428U/E-LS monitor.

DMI-to-SNMP Mapping
-------------------
Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation 5 supports DMI-to-SNMP mapping. SNMP-based application programs are able to browse and receive alerts from Dell DMI clients.

To enable browsing and alerting on a client system running Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation and a server system running the SNMP application, perform the following steps:

1. Install the dellsys.mib file in the SNMP application's database on the server system.

NOTE: By default, the dellsys.mib file is located in the \dmi\mib directory (for example, c:\dmi\mib) on the client system.

2. Install and start the Microsoft SNMP service on the DMI client system.

3. Configure the SNMP service on the client system to forward traps to the server system.

Unattended/Silent Installation
------------------------------
To perform a silent installation (no dialog boxes appear), you must generate a script file. To generate a script file, perform the following steps using a Dell system that does not have Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation installed:

1. Insert Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation diskette 1 into the diskette drive.

2. Verify that all files on the diskette are viewable from Explorer.

3. Click the Start button, click Run, and then type the following command. Do not type a space before x.

a:\setup -r -f1x:\test\setup.iss

NOTE: x:\test\setup.iss is the pathname of a silent installation script file (where x: is a driver letter of your choice, such as a network drive). All options that you select during this installation, including whether or not to reboot the system, are recorded in this file.

To test the script file, use the following procedure:

1. After the installation is complete, reboot the system and copy the contents of the two Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation diskettes to a directory named x:\test, where x is the drive letter of your choice. Be sure all files on the diskette are viewable.

2. Copy setup.iss that you previously created to x:\test.

3. Click the Start button, click Run, and then type the following command. Do not type a space before x.

setup.exe -s -f1x:\test\setup.iss

4. The setup program returns immediately, and the installation continues in the background. If you do not want the setup program to return until the installation is complete, run the installation with the following command:

start /wait setup -sms -s -f1<isspath>

The setup program reads the setup.iss script file and proceeds to reinstall Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation in the same way the program was set up when you generated the script file. If you rebooted the system after installation, the system reboots when the silent installation is complete.

NOTE: You may require more than one installation script. To calculate the number of scripts required, multiply the total number of system types (OptiPlex, Dell Precision WorkStations, Latitude) by the number of operating systems. For example, suppose you have the following installation base:

150 OptiPlex computers
25 Latitude computers
Windows 98
Windows NT

Two types of systems multiplied by two operating systems equals four installation scripts.

One script can be utilized for all 150 OptiPlex systems if they all run the same operating system. It does not matter if the OptiPlex systems are different models (such as GX1, GN, GXPro, GXa, or GX1p), as long as the systems are all on the list of supported products found earlier in this document.

NOTE: If any changes are made to the installation process after you generate the installation script, you need additional installation script(s). For example, a change that requires an additional installation script is a path change or an instrumentation installation instead of a full installation.

Unattended/Silent Uninstallation
--------------------------------
To uninstall Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation, you must use the uninsdmi command located on diskette 1. The syntax for the uninsdmi command is shown in the following example:

x:uninsdmi [-r][-y]|[-c]

where x is the diskette drive where diskette 1 is located, -r indicates no reboot at the end of uninstallation, -y indicates a silent uninstallation (no dialog boxes appear), and -c forces uninsdmi to clear all the registry entries.

NOTES: You must type a space after the uninsdmi command and between each option.

Do not type brackets in the actual command.

Do not use the -c option with either of the other two options.

Use the -c option only when both of the following conditions apply:

* Installation was successful
* Uninstallation fails

The -c option removes the registry entries that remain if the \dmi directory is removed without using the uninsdmi command.

Administrator privileges are required to run this command.

Service Layer Version Information
---------------------------------

Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation uses the DMI Service Provider version 2.62.

Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation Frequently Asked Questions
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. Can I install Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation 5 on a system that has Dell Inspector 4.3, 4.2a, 4.2, or 4.1 installed?

A. Yes. When you install Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation 5, you are first prompted to uninstall Dell Inspector 4.3, 4.2, 4.2a, or 4.1. Follow the instructions displayed on the screen to perform the uninstallation. After you have uninstalled Dell OpenManage Client 4.3, 4.2, 4.2a, or 4.1, the system prompts you to reboot the system. You must reboot the system to successfully install Dell OpenManage Client Instrumenatation 5. Run Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation 5 setup again to complete the installation.

Q. Why does Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation report some attribute values as Unknown or -1?

A. If Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation does not detect an attribute value for the selected group of the local or remote system, or if the attribute value exists but is not detected, Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation displays Unknown or -1.

Q. What happens when one of the system's thermal probes is missing or not working properly?

A. If a thermal probe is missing or malfunctioning when the system boots, the system reports a noncritical event. To avoid damage to your system, replacing the faulty probe is recommended. If a thermal probe malfunctions during run time, the system reports a critical event and Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation shuts down the system automatically.

NOTE: To determine whether a system has an actual temperature problem or a faulty probe, check the current temperature using any DMI 2.0 compliant browser.

Q. Will my system shut down when Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation detects a critical event?

A. The system shuts down automatically when the temperature probe reading for the hard-disk drive or microprocessor exceeds a critical range (too high or too low). Before the system shuts down, a message appears that instructs the user to save all files. The user has 60 seconds to save all files.

NOTE: Some older Dell systems do not support environmental monitors.

Q. How can I upgrade Dell OpenManage Client 4.3, 4.2 or 4.1 silently?

A. First uninstall the existing version. Run uninsdmi.exe from the Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation 5 diskette 1 with the silent option, as shown in the following example:

uninsdmi -y

This uninstalls the existing version and restarts the system.

Next, create a setup.iss file by using the procedure defined in "Unattended/Silent Installation" found earlier in this document, and run the setup with the setup.iss file, as shown in the following example:

start /wait setup -sms -s -f1<isspath>

Known Issues
------------
Latitude customers please note: When warm docking, you will have to restart your system for OMCI 5 to work correctly.

The following issues have been identified in Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation running on all Dell systems:

* OMCI requires your system's NIC (network interface card) driver to be installed prior to the OMCI installation. Installing OMCI without the NIC driver will result in a missing LAN adapter MIF.

* If the SNMP service is installed, SNMP will add entries to the 'Win32 Service Provider Indication Subscriptions' after every reboot.

* Attribute values for 'System Cache Size' (in the 'Dell Systems MIF' or the 'Dell Portables MIF') for L1 and/or L2 cache may be reported incorrectly. Update your system's BIOS to the latest available from Dell's support website.

* If your system is deployed in a NetWare environment, it may transmit SAP640 broadcasts. Please contact Dell Technical Support for a utility to update the Operating System's registry to prevent the SAP640 broadcasts. For more information, please see Microsoft's Knowledge Base article #Q142533.

* On Dell Precision Workstation Systems 620 configured with a single processor. The terminator card may be incorrectly reported as Pentium II processor running at the speed of the actual Pentium III processor.

* The parallel port mode may show it is unsupported until altered for the first time.

* The serial number for some PCMCIA Network cards may be blank under NT4.0.

* A Token Ring card installed on a Cdock/Cdock II will not be seen using a DMI viewer.

* OMCI enumeration of PCMCIA slots may show a total of 4 slots when there are only 2 physical slots. This is a feature that has been added for multi-function cards.

* If you have a 3Com(R) network adapter card installed in your system and run the 3Com diagnostics, the system is disconnected from the network after the diagnostics are run. A warning message displays on the screen to alert you that the system will be disconnected from the network. You must restart your system to reconnect to the network.

* If you have 3Com(R) Instrumentation installed, to avoid possible .dll conflicts and program errors, 3Com(R) Instrumentation needs to be uninstalled before Dell Open Manage Client 5 is uninstalled. If Dell Open Manage Client 5 is uninstalled before the 3Com(R) Instrumentation, DOM Client 5 may not be able to be reinstalled on client machine. Other possible errors may occur as well.

* Under Windows NT, the primary user field will display "System" instead of the login name of the user because the instrumentation service is started with the system account.

* To store the Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation files in a directory other than the default directory, the directory name can be a maximum of eight characters. Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation does not support directory names longer than eight characters.

* Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation does not detect any video BIOS installed if the video card is an add-in card.

* Adding SNMP services and rebooting the system adds an additional subscription to the service layer subscription list. A new subscription is added after every reboot.

* Installing Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation under the Windows 95 or Windows 98 operating system while logged in as a particular user and then uninstalling when logged in as another user may prevent the program groups from being removed.

* A reboot is needed to refresh a client system's status if a warning condition is detected and then corrected on that system. For example, to make the system's status in the DMI Clients window return from Warning to Normal and OK, you need to reboot the client system.

The following issues have been identified in Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation running on Dell OptiPlex systems and Dell Precision WorkStations:

* When you change the system's integrated drive electronics (IDE) hard-disk drive setting from Off to On, the following error message appears when the system restarts:
Plug & Play Configuration Error
Plug & Play Configuration Error
Plug & Play Configuration Error
Plug & Play Configuration Error
Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility

You can correct this error by rebooting the system or accessing the System Setup program, and then pressing <Alt><B> to save and reboot.

* If a directory named "DMI" is present in the system at the time of installation, the default path selected by install program will be "DMI0".

* The "Bios Characteristics Description" attribute under the "Bios Characteristics" group in the "Dell Systems MIF" reports "Not Available".

* In order to change the Setup Password, you must have the CMOS Password Status set to "Unlocked." The Password Status can only be set from CMOS Setup.

*A long format on Iomega Jazz drive won't complete when OMC/A 4.2, 4.2a, 4.3 or OMCI 5 is installed. To work around this problem the SMART Polling has to be set to "Disabled" in the "Dell Configuration Group" in the "Dell Systems MIF" on versions 4.3 or 5. The workaround for previous versions (4.2 and 4.2a) is to set the SMART polling interval to 720 minutes.

*If you have 2 nics installed, each nic by a different manufacturer, the manufacturer attribute under Component ID of the Nic MIF will be left blank.
