PowerVault 110T-LTO2 Tape Drive Firmware Revision 3AYC Update instructions for Windows and Linux

Prior to upgrading:
- Ensure the tape drive is unloaded and the drive is in an idle state 
(stop the services for all backup applications).

Extract instructions
--------------------

Download and run the file “R82373.exe” from a Microsoft Windows Based System.  This will create the directory c:\dell\drivers\R82373\ containing the files:	
	
   readme.htm  				- installation instructions in HTML format
   readme.txt  				- installation instructions in text format
   releasenotes.txt 			– release notes in text format
   \Firmware\de031031l_3AYC.ro 		– Firmware image file
   \Windows\LTO-TDX-WinToolV.03.02.exe 	– upgrade tool installer
   \Linux\LTO-TDX-LinTool 		– tool to upgrade the drive in Linux
   \Linux\tool.bin			- binary file for Linux upgrade tool


IMPORTANT:  If you have back up applications running services such as Backup Exec or Arcserve you must stop the services from running at this time or the application will not see the Tape Device.  For help on stopping the services see your Software Documentation.

Windows Instructions
--------------------

1. Go to the directory c:\dell\drivers\R82373\Windows.  Click LTO-TDX-WinToolV.03.02.exe.  This will start the installation program for the LTO 2 update tool.  Once completed, the installation will have created three desktop items:  a folder called "LTO Firmware", a folder called "LTO Dumps", and the LTO-TRX Tape Drive Tool executable.

2. Copy the de031031l_3AYC.ro located in c:\dell\drivers\R82373\Firmware to the "LTO Firmware" directory on the desktop.  Then double click on the LTO-TDX Tape Drive Tool executable.

Upgrade firmware:

3.  Run the upgrade tool by double clicking on its desktop icon

4. The program will display a licensing agreement; once you have agreed to the terms it will begin a scan for connected IBM devices.  When it has completed the scan, enter the device number corresponding to the drive you want to upgrade.

5.  At the following menu, choose "1. Load Drive Firmware".  The program will display a list of firmware files; enter the number corresponding to the 3AYC image.  At this point the tool will begin flashing the drive.

<--- CAUTION : Do not remove power to the tape drive during this process. --->

6.  Once the firmware flash has been completed, the command menu will re-appear.  Choose "99. Exit Program" to quit.

7. Reboot the server prior to the next scheduled backup.  This will restart the backup services and force the OS to see the device with it’s new firmware level.

Red Hat Linux Instructions
--------------------------


**NOTE: There are several known issues with the default Adaptec SCSI host driver aic7xxx included in RedHat AS 2.1.  Dell recommends that users upgrade to the aic7xxx_mod driver that resolves many of these issues.  The aic7xxx_mod driver is automatically installed on AS 2.1 systems, so no RPMS are needed.  To use it:
	1.  Edit the /etc/modules.conf file so that references to aic7xxx are replaced by aic7xxx_mod
	2.  Remake initrd
	3.  Reboot server

1. Copy de031031l_3AYC.ro, LTO-TDX-LinTool, and tool.bin from the Windows Server to the Linux Server that has the tape drive attached. 

2. If running a graphical interface (GNOME, KDE, etc.) open a command line window.

3. Put the program files (LTO-TDX-LinTool, tool.bin) and the firmware image (de031031l_3AYC.ro) into a directory on the computer connected to the tape drive.

4. Move to the directory where you have put the files.  Create a new directory called “LTO Firmware” by typing the command:
      	mkdir LTO\ Firmware
   Move the firmware file into the new directory:
	mv ./de031031l_3AYC.ro ./LTO\ Firmware/

	./LTO-TDX-LinTool
