Introduction: Softex PC-Card Controller Installation Guide
-----------------------------------------------------------

The Softex utility provides PC Card control features for your Dell(r) 
Latitude(r) portable computer running the Microsoft(r) Windows NT(r) 
operating system. 

If you have an earlier version of the Softex PC-Card Controller installed, 
remove it before you install the updated PC-Card Controller. Refer to 
Uninstalling the Softex PC-Card Controller found later in this document 
for instructions.

If you do not have an earlier version of the Softex PC-Card Controller 
installed, or if you already have uninstalled the previous version of 
Softex PC-Card Controller, you are ready to install the new Softex 
PC-Card Controller. Refer to Installing the Softex PC-Card Controller 
found later in this document for instructions.

CAUTION: Do not reinstall any version of the Softex utilities earlier than
2.19 if you have installed the Windows NT Service Pack 4. If you do, your
system may become unusable.

Installation of the Softex PC-Card Controller should occur with the system 
undocked, and with any peripheral devices removed from the system.



Uninstalling the PC Card Controller Utility
-------------------------------------------

Perform the following procedure to uninstall the PC Card controller utility:
1. Insert Disk 2 of the Softex PC Card Controller software into drive A:.
2. Click the Start button on the Windows NT Taskbar.
3. Choose Run and enter A:\uninstl.exe

The Softex PC Card Controller Uninstall window appears.

NOTE: If the Softex PC Card Controller Uninstall window notifies you that
one or more installed PC Card device drivers must be uninstalled prior to
removing the Softex PC Card Controller utility, record the devices listed,
click OK, and then uninstall each of the listed devices. Refer to
Uninstalling PC Card Devices (below) for instructions.

4. Click the icon to begin the uninstallation procedure.
5. When the Softex PC Card Controller Uninstall window notifies you that
   the uninstallation has successfully completed, click OK. The Reboot Now
   window appears.
6. Click Restart Now to restart the system.

Introduction
If an error message appears when you attempt to uninstall the PC Card
controller utility, make a list of the drivers which must be uninstalled.

To uninstall a PCMCIA IDE driver, refer to Uninstalling PCMCIA IDE Drivers for
instructions.

For uninstallation instructions on all other PC Card device drivers listed,
refer to Uninstalling Other PC Card Device Drivers.


Uninstalling PCMCIA IDE Drivers
-------------------------------

To uninstall the PCMCIA IDE drivers, perform the following steps:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the SCSI Adapters icon.
3. Click the Drivers tab.

CAUTION: Do not uninstall the CMD CSA-646U Ultra DMA IDE Adapter (if it
is listed). If you do, the system may become unusable.

4. Click PCMCIA IDE Driver, and then click Remove.
5. When the Remove Driver window asks if you are sure you want to remove
   the driver, click Yes.
6. When the driver is successfully removed, click OK.
7. Proceed to Uninstalling Other PC Card Device Drivers for instructions
   on uninstalling the other drivers on your list.


Uninstalling Other PC Card Device Drivers
-----------------------------------------

To uninstall the other drivers on your list, perform the following steps:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Network icon.
3. Click the Adapters tab.
4. Click a driver on the list you recorded earlier, and then click Remove.
5. When the Warning window asks you to verify that you want to permanently
   remove the component, click Yes. The selected device driver is uninstalled.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for all remaining devices drivers you must uninstall.
7. When all necessary drivers have been removed, click Close.
8. When the Network Settings Change window prompts you to restart the system,
   click Yes.

The system restarts. You are now ready to remove the PC Card controller
utility. Refer to Uninstalling the PC Card Controller Utility for
instructions.

NOTE: If you already have an earlier version of the Softex PC Card
installed on your Dell(r) Latitude(r) portable computer, you must uninstall
it before installing the newer version. Refer to Uninstalling the Softex
PC-Card Controller found in this document for instructions.



Installing PC Card Controller Utility
-------------------------------------

Perform the following procedure to install the PC Card controller utility:
1. Insert Disk 1 of the Softex PC Card Controller software into drive A:.
2. Click the Start button on the Windows NT Taskbar.
3. Choose Run and enter A:\setup.exe. The Softex PC Card Controller Setup
   screen appears, and then the Softex PC Card Controller Setup window
   displays the license agreement.
4. Read the agreement and then click Accept.

NOTE: If you do not accept the license agreement, you cannot install the PC
Card controller utility.

5.  Click the icon on the Softex PC Card Controller Setup window to accept
    the default installation directory. The Softex PC Card Controller Setup
    window monitors the installation and displays a status bar. The Creating
    Control Panel window appears and notifies you that the setup program will
    install the Softex PC Card Controller in the Control Panel, and that the
    PC Card (PCMCIA) icon will be disabled.
6.  Click I Understand.
7.  When the Softex PC Card Controller Setup window notifies you that the
    installation is complete, click OK. The Reboot Now window appears.
8.  Click Restart Now to restart the system. The system restarts and the
    Softex PC Card Controller Diagnostics window appears.
9.  Click Next>, and then click Next> again to start the diagnostics utility.
10. When the Softex PC Card Controller Diagnostics window notifies you that
    the diagnostics are complete, click Finish. The system restarts.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
