Printing this document may generate formatting and pagination problems. If you wish to print a copy of the HTML manual, check 3Com support WWW pages for information on downloading a PDF version of the document. FOR DOS AND WINDOWS 3.X ======================= The LAN card works with laptops that contain Card Services. If you are not running Card Services on your system, please note that the 3C574 will work with laptops that have an Intel PCMCIA (PC Card) controller or compatible controller. If Card Services is not installed, it might not work with other controllers. You may override some driver configuration parameters (IRQ, I/O base and CIS Memory base address). See the sample NET.CFG or PROTOCOL.INI files on the Installation disk for proper syntax. FULL-DUPLEX OPERATION ===================== For NetWare ODI: The DOS ODI NetWare driver supports full-duplex operation (sending and receiving data simultaneously). WARNING: You MUST be connected to a switched full-duplex Ethernet hub to use this feature To enable this feature add the ODI Keyword "FULL DUPLEX" to the NET.CFG file. For NDIS 2.0: To enable the NDIS 2.0 full duplex, add the Full Duplex key word to the PROTOCOL.INI file: ORIGINAL (Half Duplex): [ms$el3c574] DRIVERNAME=EL3C574$ MODIFIED (Full Duplex): [ms$el3c574] DRIVERNAME=EL3C574$ FULL-DUPLEX=YES PLUG AND PLAY ============= Plug and Play needs to be set to disable in CMOS when using the DOS drivers with the LAN card. Known Problems ============== ------------------------------------------------------- AST Ascentia P Series Problem. Card not working properly. Action. The LAN card does not support Ascentia P Series computers. ------------------------------------------------------- Dell Latitude LM P100 Problem. Under Windows 95 OSR 2, this computer failed some DOS diagnostics tests when the LAN card was installed in the bottom slot and card was set for I/O=300 and IRQ=10. Auto configure is unable to find any usable IRQ. Action. The DOS drivers should function properly even though the adapter fails diagnostics with the settings I/O=300 and IRQ=10. ------------------------------------------------------- Tecra 440CX Problem. On this computer running Windows 95 (OSR 2), after removing and reinstalling the NDIS driver on this platform forces the system into Safe Mode. Action. Remove the LAN card, reboot, then reinsert the LAN card after rebooting. This should allow normal operation. Once normal operation resumes, running ScanDisk should fix the problem. ------------------------------------------------------- Micron Transport XKE Problem. When running DOS Diagnostics (INSTALL.EXE) on this computer, the system may hang during Starting Configuration and Diagnostics, please wait. The system may hang while loading the NDIS2 driver. Action. In the BIOS, try setting Plug-and-Play to Yes and reboot. ------------------------------------------------------- Texas Instruments Extensa 660CD notebook computers Problem. On this notebook computer, AUTO CONFIGURE under INSTALL.EXE does not properly allocate resources to the LAN card. AUTO CONFIGURE sets IRQ 5, I/O 300 on the card, and with these settings there may be intermittent self-test failures. Action. Specify either IRQ 10 or 11 and I/O 300 for the LAN card. ------------------------------------------------------- Toshiba Satellite 220CDS Problem. The DOS diagnostics program INSTALL.EXE does not detect the LAN card. Action. In the computer BIOS, set the PC Card Controller mode to PCIC Compatible. ------------------------------------------------------- Digital Hi Note VP 575 Problem. Unable to get the INSTALL.EXE, DOS ODI, or NDIS 2.0 driver to load on a Digital HINOTE VP 575. Action. The LAN card does not support the Digital HINOTE VP 575 in DOS environments. Use the card under Windows 95, where it will install and operate properly. ------------------------------------------------------- Digital Hi Note Ultra Problem. When Auto Configure is run as part of the DOS Diagnostics, this computer cannot locate an available IRQ. This problem has occurred with NDIS 4 under Windows NT 4.0 and with NDIS 3. Action. With NDIS 4 under Windows NT 4.0, use the adapter settings I/O= 0x300H and IRQ=11. With NDIS 2, use I/O=0x380H and IRQ=5. ------------------------------------------------------- Sony VAIO PCG-808 and 505FX Problem. After initial installation and setup, the Configuration and Diagnostic program in INSTALL.EXE cannot detect the LAN card. Action. Power down the computer and reboot. After this, the computer should be able to recognize the card normally. For continued operation, be sure you are using the correct settings for the LAN card: I/O=300 and IRQ=10. ------------------------------------------------------- Failure when modem card is installed Problem. In DOS environments, the LAN card NDIS and ODI drivers may not install correctly with some 3Com, Megahertz, and US Robotics modem enablers. Action. Reload the modem enabler using the following line in CONFIG.SYS: device=a:\enable.exe /c2 /im3 /sn The switch /sn specifies the slot the modem uses and will enable the modem only in that slot. N can be any value A through H (for example, on Dell Latitude computers, A is the top slot and B is the bottom slot), so you would use /sA or /sB). The /c and /im switches set the COM port and interrupt level. NDIS 4 DRIVER ============= 3Com includes the new NDIS 4 network driver on the Installation disk. The W95EL574.INF file loads the correct driver for Windows 95 and the OEMSETNT.INF file loads the correct driver for Windows NT. The NDIS 4 driver works with Windows 95 OSR2 (version # 4.00.950b) and Windows NT 4.0, but not standard Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51. The NDIS 3 driver works with Windows 95 OSR2, Windows NT 4.0, standard Windows 95 (versions 4.00.950 or 400.950a), and Windows NT 3.51. CHECKING THE DRIVER INSTALLATION ================================ After installing the NDIS driver under Windows 95, if either of the LEDs are not turned on, click Control Panel, click the System icon, and select Device Manager to check the status of the Network Adapter. If Network Adapter has a yellow exclamation mark, an incorrect NDIS driver was loaded from the Installation disk. You must remove the incorrect driver and install the correct driver. Installing the NDIS 4 Driver for Windows 95 OSR2 You must use the latest NDIS.VXD (8/24/96 or later) to use the NDIS 4 driver. 1. To install the NDIS 4 driver, using Windows 95 OSR2 (version #4.00.950b), follow these steps: 2. Make a backup copy of the W95EL574.INF file. 3. If you are using 3Com's automatic installation program,Intelligent Auto Install, delete references to any other network adapter in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file prior to executing Intelligent Auto Install. You should delete the NET.CFG file, and a new one will be copied over. Windows NT 4.0 -------------- The most common issue that we see with the 3CCFE574BT/3CXFE574BT adapter is finding valid resources for the non-plug and play operating system of Windows NT 4.0. Below is a list of configurations that 3Com Technical Support has found through our cases to work. Every situation is different, but the below resources are a good starting point. In those instances, use whichever resources work. The most common symptom of a resource conflict is either a freeze during startup or no connection to the network. If your system is not listed, please go to http://knowledgebase.3com.com. After registering, open solution 1.0.13478523.1976541 for the latest working configurations available.
