------------------------------------------------

Version A00
-----------

Required Software:
------------------
* OS: Windows NT 4.0 Workstation
* OS Updates: Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 with Y2K
* Video Driver:       Neomagic NMG5
* Audio Driver:       Neomagic NMA2
* Touchpad Driver: Synaptics Touchpad Driver
* APM:                Softex APM Driver
* PCMCIA:             Softex PCMCIA Driver
* Internal Modem (if applicable): Lucent Technologies Modem Driver

Software Installation Sequence:
-------------------------------
* Install Windows NT 4.0 Workstation by modifying the bios. The bios
  can be accessed by pressing F2 when the Dell logo is displayed after
  power on. Change the Boot sequence to CD-ROM first, then save and exit.
  This will allow the system to boot from the NT CD-ROM and will
  ask if you wish to continue installing NT.

  During installation, go ahead and install Microsoft Networking.
  Select the 'MS Loopback' adapter for the network adapter (select 802.3
  frame type), and 'IPX/SPX' for the protocol.
  (Explanation: The reason for this is that Networking must be installed
  before the Service Pack is applied because the Service Pack will only
  update files that are already on the system. Therefore the Server
  service will not be the same version as the installed Service Pack.
  The MS Loopback adapter is a Software-based 'virtual' adapter that can
  be used as a placeholder for a user specified NIC that may or may not
  be added at a later time.)

* After Windows NT is installed and you have booted to the desktop,
  install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 or 5 by running 'Update.exe' from the
  CD. It is NOT necessary to make a backup of the current system files.

* After the Service Pack is completely installed, and you have booted to
  the desktop, install the video driver. Right click on the desktop and
  select 'Properties'. Click on the last tab, 'Settings'. Click on the
  'Display Type' button. Click on the 'Change' button. Since we are
  installing 3rd party drivers, click on the 'Have Disk' button and
  navigate to the 'Video' directory on the CD-ROM. After the driver is
  installed, close the 'Display Properties' dialog and restart the computer.

* Install the audio drivers. Open up the Control Panel and double click
  on 'Multimedia'. Click on the last tab 'Devices', and then press the
  'Add' button. Again since we are installing 3rd party drivers, select
  'Unlisted or Updated Driver' and press the 'OK' button. Navigate to
  the 'NTAudio' directory on the C: drive. After the driver is
  installed, click the 'Restart Now' button to restart the computer.

* Install the Touchpad driver by running 'Setup.exe' in the Touchpad
  directory on the C: drive. Follow the instructions for installation.

* Install the Softex APM drivers by running 'Setup.exe' in the
  'APM' directory on the C: drive. Follow the instructions for
  installation. You can install the PCMCIA drivers before restarting
  the computer.

* Install the Softex PCMCIA drivers by running 'Setup.exe' in the
  'PCMCIA' directory on the C: drive. Follow the instructions for
  installation. Restart the computer after setup completes. After the
  system is restarted, Setup will continue. Follow the instructions and
  finish the installation.

* If there is an internal modem installed installed in the laptop (AND it is
  enabled in the BIOS), install the Lucent Technologies Modem Driver.
  Run 'Setup.exe' in the 'Modem' directory on the C: drive. The setup
  wizard will walk you through the installation of the modem driver. After the
  modem driver has been installed, allow the setup wizard to restart the computer.
  After restarting the computer, open up the Control Panel and double click on
  'Modems'. Click on the 'Dialing Properties' button. Fill in all the information
  in this dialog, especially your area code. Close the dialog. Finally, close the
  'Modems Properties' dialog. The modem is now ready for use.

*
* Installing an External Modem:
*
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
External Modem Installation Procedure (with internal modem already installed):
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If the modem vendor has provided a 'Setup.exe' program to install the modem, simply
run that program and follow the setup instructions. If the vendor has provided
driver files only, you can install the modem by following these simple steps:

Open the 'Control Panel' and double click on the 'Modems' icon. Click the
'Add' button. Click the 'Don't detect my modem, I will select it from the list'
check box and click the 'Next' button. Since we are installing 3rd party drivers,
click on the 'Have Disk' button and navigate to the location of the modem vendors
driver files. Install the modem on a free COM port. (NOTE: If you are installing an
external modem (non-PCMCIA), typically you should select COM 1.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
External Modem Installation Procedure (without internal modem installed):
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If the modem vendor has provided a 'Setup.exe' program to install the modem, simply
run that program and follow the setup instructions. If the vendor has provided
driver files only, you can install the modem by following these simple steps:

Open the 'Control Panel' and double click on the 'Modems' icon. Click the
'Don't detect my modem, I will select it from the list' check box and click

Install the modem on a free COM port. (NOTE: If you are installing an external
modem (non-PCMCIA), typically you should select COM 1.

After the modem has been installed, and if you have not already done so,
open up the Control Panel and double click on 'Modems'. Click on the 'Dialing
Properties' button. Fill in all the information in this dialog, especially your
area code. Close the dialog. Finally, close the 'Modems Properties' dialog.
The modem is now ready for use.
