PowerVault 100T-DDS4 Tape Drive Firmware Update instructions for Windows and Linux for FW revision 8250 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This upgrade adds the latest performance enhancing features to the PowerVault 100T DDS4 tape drive. This firmware corrects an intermittent problem where some DDS4 tape drives with a firmware version lower than 8250 may damage tapes when being ejected from the drive. This release will update the drive code level to 8250. Important: If the firmware version on your drive is a version 8XXX then you require this version. If your drive has firmware version 9XXX your tape device does not need this firmware and you WILL NOT be able to load it. If you have a version 9XXX your tape device does not have the tape damage upon eject problem. Download the upgrade utility as described below for your operating system to determine your current firmware version. Prior to upgrading: - Ensure the tape drive is unloaded and the SCSI bus is in an idle state (stop and or hold all backup applications). - Confirm a valid tape device driver is installed and running on the computer attached to the tape drive. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: x: represents the system root drive letter. Upgrading the PowerVault 100T DDS4 Tape Drive Firmware Windows NT4.0 and 2000 instructions Linux RH 6.x, 7.x instructions Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 Instructions Download the upgrade utility: 1. Download and run the file DDS4 V8250 Update.exe from a Microsoft Windows Based System. This will create the directory: x:\dell\drivers\R46932\Update Utility\Windows containing the files: stdiag.exe, diagsv.exe – the program files to upgrade the drive V8250052.bin – the firmware image file IMPORTANT: If you have back up applications running services such as Backup Exec or Arcserve you must stop the services from running at this time or the application will not see the Tape Device. For help on stopping the services see your Software Documentation. 2. Go to the directory x:\dell\drivers\R46932\Update Utility\Windows. Click stdiag.exe. The software will search for all the supported tape drives that are attached to the system. Once the search is complete, the diagnostic window will be displayed, showing one tab for each supported tape drive found. Included are the drive type, target ID, drive model number and firmware revision level. Note: If the firmware version on your drive is a version 8XXX then you require this version. If your drive has firmware version 9XXX your tape device does not need this firmware and you WILL NOT be able to load it. If you have a version 9XXX your tape device does not have the tape damage upon eject problem. Upgrade your firmware: 3. If more than one supported tape drive is present, click the tab that represents the drive you wish to upgrade, then select the “Upgrade Firmware” operation in the left-hand column. 4. In the “File Name” box type in “V8250052.bin” and click the “Upgrade Firmware” button. This file should have been downloaded in the same directory as the STDIAG utility and should not be moved or renamed. CAUTION : Do not remove power to the tape drive during this process. 7. The firmware upgrade process will begin after a warning message about not powering down your drive. The message box at the bottom of the window should have the message “Firmware Version 8250 installed. If you get the message “The Firmware File you have chosen is not supported by your drive” you are at the most recent firmware revision for the tape drive you have and this fix is not needed for your drive. 9. After the tape drive have been upgraded, close the upgrade application. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Upgrading under Red Hat Linux (all versions) Download the upgrade utility: 1. Download and run the file "DDS4 V8250 Update.exe" from a Microsoft Windows based system. This will create the directory: x:\dell\drivers\R46932\Update Utility\Linux containing the files: diagsvlx – the program to upgrade the drive V8250052.bin – the firmware image file 2. If running a graphical interface (GNOME, KDE, etc.) open a command line window. 3. Put the program file (diagsvlx) and the firmware image (V8250052.bin) into a directory on the computer connected to the tape drive. 4. Go to the directory where you have put the files. Ensure the user has execute permissions for the program file (diagsvlx). If not add the execute permission by typing: chmod +x diagsvlx 5. Type: “./diagsvlx show”. This will display all tape drives recognized by the upgrade utility in the format: Port:Bus:TargetId:Lun. (Example: SCSI Port: 1, Bus: 0, Target: 6, Lun: 0) This information will be used by the utility to identify the target tape drive for the download. This will also show the current firmware level for your drive (see note below). Note: If the firmware version on your drive is a version 8XXX-XXX then you require this version. If your drive has firmware version 9XXX-XXX your tape device does not need this firmware and you WILL NOT be able to load it. If you have a version 9XXX-XXX your tape device does not have the tape damage upon eject problem. Upgrade your firmware: 6. Using the SCSI ID information from Step 5 type the following: “./diagsvlx upgrade –id:1:0:6:0 –f:v8250052.bin” (the –fid: field shown here is the example from Step 5). 7. “Issue Cmd: Download firmware”, will be displayed to indicate the firmware is being downloaded. Also, the LED’s on the tape drive will flash. DO NOT POWER CYCLE THE TAPE DRIVE DURING THE UPGRADE!!! 8. When finished, “Firmware Version 8250 installed”, will be displayed. Press ENTER. 9. Reboot the PowerVault 100T DDS4 LVD Tape Drive and the computer connected to the tape drive. 10. The firmware update is complete.Download Driver Pack
