PowerVault 136T Library, Remote Management Card, Fibre Channel Bridge, and LTO Tape Drive Firmware

This release contains the following firmware versions for the PowerVault 136T Tape Library.
* PowerVault 136T Library Firmware v2.60.40
* PowerVault 136T Remote Management Card Firmware v131d.00012
* PowerVault 136T LTO Tape Drive Firmware vE15V 4.211
* PowerVault 136T FC Module Firmware v4.03.08

Downloading the upgrade

1. Download and run the file 136FWA03.EXE.   The file will extract its contents to the following locations:

x:\dell\drivers\136T\FirmwareA03 - Contains the update procedures.
x:\dell\drivers\136T\FirmwareA03\Library - Contains the library firmware.
x:\dell\drivers\136T\FirmwareA03\RMU - Contains the remote management card firmware.
x:\dell\drivers\136T\FirmwareA03\LTO Drive - Contains the LTO tape drive firmware.
x:\dell\drivers\136T\FirmwareA03\FC Module - Contains the Fibre Channel bridge firmware.

Upgrading the PowerVault 136T Library Firmware

The PowerVault 136T Library Firmware is updated through the remote management card of the library.  The remote management card must have a valid IP address.  

1. Open a web browser from the computer that contains the firmware files.

2. Point the web browser to the IP address of the remote management card that is contained in the library whose firmware is to be updated.

3. Select the firmware tab from the main page.

4. Enter the administrator user name and password for this library.  The default user name is admin and the default password is password.

5. Select Update Library Firmware in the Select Target for Update box that appears.

6. Click on the Browse button and select the location of the firmware file.  The default directory is x:\dell\drivers\136T\FirmwareA03\Library.

7. Click on the Update Firmware button and the process will begin.  DO NOT POWER CYCLE or RESET the library during the firmware update.  

8. Reboot the library once the update has finished.

9. The firmware level of the library can be verified by going to the main web page of the remote management card.  The firmware version is listed in the Library Firmware field.

Upgrading the PowerVault 136T Remote Management Card Firmware

1. Open a web browser from the computer that contains the firmware files.

2. Point the web browser to the IP address of the remote management card that is contained in the library whose firmware is to be updated.

3. Select the firmware tab from the main page.

4. Enter the administrator user name and password for this library.  The default user name is admin and the default password is password.

5. Select Update RMU Firmware in the Select Target for Update box that appears.

6. Click on the Browse button and select the location of the firmware file rmu-dell136t.lif.  The default directory is x:\dell\drivers\136T\FirmwareA03\RMU.

7. Click on the Update Firmware button and the process will begin.  DO NOT POWER CYCLE or RESET the library during the firmware update.  

8. Reboot the library once the update has finished.

9. The firmware level of the remote management card can be verified by going to the main web page of the remote management card.  The firmware version is listed in the RMU Firmware field.

Upgrading the PowerVault 136T LTO Tape Drive Firmware

There are two methods for upgrading the PowerVault 136T LTO Tape Drive Firmware.  These methods are through the remote management card or through the use of Dell's Library and Tape Tools Application.  The Library and Tape Tools Application is contained in the x:\dell\drivers\136T\FirmwareA03\LTO Drive directory.

Upgrading the LTO Drive Firmware through the Dell Library and Tape Tools Application (Recommended)

You must use the version of Dell Library and Tape Tools supplied with this release.  If you have any other versions of Dell Library and Tape Tools installed on the system performing the update, you must un-install that version.

1. Go to the directory x:\Dell\Drivers\136T\FirmwareA03\LTO Drive.  Click on the program Dell_LTTInstall2.7.exe and follow the directions to complete the installation.  This program will create the default directory x:\Program Files\Dell Library & Tape Tools.  Do NOT execute the utility at this time.

2. This will also install a copy of the Dell Library & Tape Tools icon on your system desktop.

Upgrading the firmware

NOTE: DO NOT USE THIS FIRMWARE FILE ON THE POWERVAULT 110T LTO TAPE DRIVE OR POWERVAULT 128T LTO TAPE DRIVE.  THIS FILE IS ONLY FOR USE WITH LTO TAPE DRIVES CONTAINED IN THE POWERVAULT 136T.

1. Click on the Dell Library & Tape Tools icon on your system desktop or click on HP_LTT.exe in the directory x:\Program Files\Dell Library & Tape Tools.

2. The Dell Library & Tape Tools - Version 2.7 window will appear.  

3. Click on Continue.

4. The upgrade utility will search for any Dell PowerVault 136T LTO drives attached to the system.

5. Click on the By Product tab in the left frame.

6. Select the HP Ultrium drive you want to upgrade.

7. Click on the Firmware icon above.  A warning message may be appear that states:

There are no matching firmware files in the currently selected firmware folder.

This is normal since the firmware upgrade directory has not been specified.  This will be performed in the next few steps.

8. Instructions for upgrading will appear on the left screen.  

9. In the local firmware files tab of the Dell Library and Tape Tools application, select the firmware location by Browsing to the directory x:\Dell\Drivers\136T\FirmwareA03\LTO Drive

10. Click on the update firmware tab a select from the devices listed the LTO drive that you wish to upgrade.

11. Click on Start Update button.

12. A warning message will appear.  After reading the message, click OK.

13. The drive will begin to upgrade the firmware.  This may take up to 2 minutes.  The 4 LEDs on the drive will flash and go solid during the upgrade.  Do not remove power to the drive during this time.

14. At the end of the upgrade, a window will appear with the results of the upgrade.

15. Once the upgrade is complete, click OK.

16. This process will need to be repeated for each tape drive contained in the PowerVault 136T Library.  

17. Once all drives have been upgraded, close the application.

Upgrading the LTO Drive Firmware through the PowerVault 136T Remote Management Card

1. Open a web browser from the computer that contains the firmware files.

2. Point the web browser to the IP address of the remote management card that is contained in the library whose firmware is to be updated.

3. Select the firmware tab from the main page.

4. Enter the administrator user name and password for this library.  The default user name is admin and the default password is password.

5. Select Update Drive X (where X is the drive number) in the Select Target for Update box that appears.  NOTE: All tape drives can be selected at one time for an upgrade or they can be individually selected and upgraded.

6. Click on the Browse button and select the location of the firmware file.  The default directory is x:\dell\drivers\136t\FirmwareA03\LTO Drive.  Select the firmware file ending the in the .e extension.  The firmware file ending in the .frm extension is for use only with the Dell Library and Tape Tools Application.

7. Click on the Update Firmware button and the process will begin.  DO NOT POWER CYCLE or RESET the library during the firmware update.  

NOTE: The LTO firmware update through the remote management card takes approximately 30 minutes per tape drive.

8. Reboot the library once the update has finished.

9. The firmware level of the LTO Drive can be verified by going to the Firmware tab of the remote management card.  The firmware version is listed in the parenthesis next to the drive.

Upgrading the Fibre Channel Module Firmware

NOTE: The firmware for the fibre channel module has been combined into one file instead of the three files found in previous releases for convenience purposes.

1. The Fibre Channel Module firmware is upgraded using the PowerVault 136T FC Bridge Manager software.  See the PowerVault 136T FC Bridge User's Guide for instructions on installing and running the PowerVault 136T FC Bridge Manager.

2. NOTE: The IP address of the PowerVault 136T FC Bridge must be set up and connected to the LAN to upgrade the firmware.

3. Start the PowerVault 136T Server application on the system where the PowerVault 136T FC Bridge Manager software has been installed.

4. Start the PowerVault 136T Client application on the system where the PowerVault 136T FC Bridge Manager software has been installed.

5. Log on to the PowerVault 136T FC Bridge Manager software using the user name and password.  The default user name is admin and the default password is password.

6. Connect to the PowerVault 136T FC Bridge by inputting the IP address of the FC Bridge needing the firmware update.

7. Right click on the PowerVault 136T FC Bridge in the PowerVault 136T FC Bridge Manager.  Select Update Firmware from the pop-up menu.

8. Select the firmware file v040308.bin.  The default location is x:\Dell\Drivers\136T\FirmwareA03\FC Module\

9. The following message will appear:

Stop all I/O with this DELL PV-136T-FC before downloading firmware.  Download file x:\dell\drivers\136T\FirmwareA03\FC Module\v040308.bin now? 

A Yes and No button will appear as well.  Select Yes to continue the upgrade.

Note: x:\dell\drivers\136T\FirmwareA03\FC Module\v040308.bin is the default path of the firmware file.

10. When the download is complete, a message will appear asking to reboot.  Select Yes to restart the PowerVault 136T FC Bridge.  A confirmation message will appear.  Click Yes.

11. You must wait until the bridge has finished restarting.  When the bridge has finished restarting, a message will appear asking to refresh the data.  Click Yes.

12. Turn off the PowerVault 136T Tape Library by using the power switch located on the front of the library.

13. Wait 30 seconds and turn the power on to the PowerVault 136T Tape Library

14. The firmware update is complete.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
