Dell Program Patch
The primary Year 2000 hardware resolution provided by Dell is the Dell-produced code in the system BIOS which properly executes the century rollover on January 1, 2000. There are some older Dell systems, mostly pre-1995 units, which either do not have a flashable BIOS or for which it is not feasible to provide a BIOS update. For these systems there is an alternative method for bringing the hardware into Year 2000 compliance. It is a simple program patch which can be inserted at the beginning of a system's config.sys file.

This program patch is NOT necessary if your Dell system BIOS is already Year 2000 compliant, but it won't hurt anything if it is installed. Follow the step-by-step instructions below for installing the program patch on your system.

Description

This program will perform essentially the same YEAR 2000 operations as the Year-2000 Compliant BIOS available in all recent DELL computers.

The program patch does the following: Reads the date through BIOS interrupt 1A, function 4 (get Real-Time Clock date)

If the year is less than 1980
Then
  Set the most-significant 2 digits to 20,
  Set the date through DOS function 2B (set system date).
EndIF

Exit without staying resident.

Since these statements can possibly alter the date, this code should be executed prior to any other program that could use the date for any function.

Since this program only runs at system boot time, it does not alter system operation after the system has processed the CONFIG.SYS file. It will not alter the date of a system that is running at the 1999-2000 transition. Therefore we reccommend the system be turned off before Midnight December 31,1999, and rebooted on or after January 1, 2000.

Installation

The program should be inserted at the beginning of the CONFIG.SYS file of any computer system running a DOS-based or WIN95-based operating system that does not have a Year-2000 Compliant BIOS.

i.e. CONFIG.SYS

DEVICE=C:\path\FIX2000.SYS <=Insert this line to your CONFIG.SYS file (path = directory where fix2000.sys is located)
BREAK=ON
FILES=30
.
.
.

When a Year 2000 compliant BIOS is not available for your Dell system, you should use the program patch when running any of the following operating systems:
  MS-DOS (all versions)
  PC-DOS
  Windows 3.x
  Windows for Workgroups
  Windows 95
