This update contains the following information about your Dell
ActiveArchives software:

• Installing an important update file
• Naming persistent image files in NAS Manager
• Naming persistent image files in Microsoft® Windows®
• Multi-volume persistent images in a cluster environment
(PowerVault 750N and 755N only)
• Multi-volume persistent images when a volume fails

See your system’s Service Manual and Administrator’s Guide for more
information.

Installing an Update File

When reinstalling your NAS system, you must install an update file to ensure that your Dell
ActiveArchives software works properly. You can find the update file on the Dell | Support
website at support.dell.com.

To install the update, perform the following steps:
1 Download the AA_QFE_1.exe file from support.dell.com.
2 Double-click AA_QFE_1.exe to open the extract-file window.
3 Enter the desired extract directory or leave the default extract directory, "C:\dell\AA_QFE_1".
4 Click Unzip to extract the update file, Dell_ActiveArchives_QFE_1.exe, and readme.txt to the
directory you selected
5 If you are not connected to your NAS system, perform the following steps to map a
drive to the C: default share, C$:

a) Open Windows Explorer.
b) Click Tools —> Map Network Drive.
c) Select a drive letter from the drop-down list.
d) Type "\\<systemname>\C$" as the folder, where systemname is the name of your NAS system.
The default systemname is "Dell<servicetag>".
e) Click Finish.
The client system is now mapped to the C: share of your NAS system at the drive letter you specified.

6 Copy the update file, Dell_ActiveArchives_QFE_1.exe, to your NAS system.
7 On the NAS system that you want to update, log into the NAS Manager as an administrator.
8 Click the Maintenance tab.
9 Click Terminal Services.
10 Enter the administrator username and password to the system.
11 Open Windows Explorer if it is not already open.
12 Browse to the directory where you put Dell_ActiveArchives_QFE_1.exe.
13 Double-click Dell_ActiveArchives_QFE_1.exe to install the update.
A pop-up window appears during the installation.
14 After the pop-up window disappears, restart your system to complete the upgrade.

Naming Persistent Image:
When naming persistent images in the NAS Manager, avoid creating persistent image
names that exceed 64 characters. Dell ActiveArchives may experience
problems when persistent image names are named 64 characters or longer.

Naming Persistent Image Files in Windows:
Windows has a limitation of 255 characters in a filename, including the
path. When you make a persistent image, the entire path and filename of
the data is stored in addition to the ActiveArchives directory (default directory name) and
persistent image filename.

For example (if using the default ActiveArchives naming conventions):
E:\ActiveArchives\Snapshot 01-01-2001 12.00.00\<Path and Filename>

If the <Path and Filename> approaches or exceeds the Windows Explorer character limit (255 characters),
then when combined together with the "\ActiveArchives\Snapshot 01-01-2001 12.00.00\", it may exceed the 255 character
limit and become inaccessible through Windows Explorer.

If this occurs, then use the following procedure to access long path and filenames in Windows Explorer:
1 Create a share on the desired snapshot folder (i.e. E:\ActiveArchives\Snapshot 01-01-2001 12.00.00\).
2 Access that share through the desired client.

The <Path and Filename> at this point does not include the additional directory structures
(i.e. E:\ActiveArchives\Snapshot 01-01-2001 12.00.00\) which shortens the <Path and Filename> back to
the original character length, so the file can now be accessed through Windows Explorer.

Multi-Volume Persistent Images in a Cluster Environment
(PowerVault 750N and 755N Only):
You can make persistent images of more than one
volume in a cluster environment. If you frequently move volumes from
one cluster node to another, Dell recommends that you make persistent
images of individual volumes only. Multi-volume persistent images may
become inaccessible if one or more of the volumes in a multi-volume
persistent image fail over to another node in the cluster. Also, do not make
multi-volume persistent images of a cluster-protected volume and a noncluster-
protected volume. If the cluster node fails for any reason, cluster-
protected volumes fail over to another cluster node and the multi-volume
persistent images may become inaccessible.

Multi-Volume Persistent Images After a Volume Fails:
If volumes are not protected by RAID 1, 5, or 1/0, or if volumes are
frequently being added and removed, Dell recommends that you make
persistent images of individual volumes. Because multi-volume persistent
images are linked to each other, a multi-volume persistent image may
become inaccessible if one volume in the multi-volume persistent image
fails or is removed from the system.
