Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN Software Version 1.28 PROSet II version 5.3.42.0 Release Notes August 23, 2002 ======================================================================== CONTENTS ======== - Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN CardBus Card - Customer Support =========================================== Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN CardBus Card =========================================== Review this information before installing your Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN CardBus Adapter. Supported Operating Systems for the Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN CardBus Adapter ========================================================================== Windows XP Windows 2000 Installing Drivers ================== Do not plug the CardBus Adapter into your computer until prompted to do so by the installation software. To install drivers, insert the Intel CD and click the Install Software button on the Intel PRO Network Connections window. The driver and PROSet II configuration software will be installed automatically. At the appropriate time you will be prompted to insert the CardBus hardware. If you inserted the card and installed the driver before running the Intel installation software, you will be prompted to uninstall the adapter. Click Next to remove the device, then click the Install Software button on the Intel PRO Network Connections window again. The driver and PROSet II configuration software will be installed automatically. For troubleshooting information see the online user guide on the Intel PRO Network Connections CD. Uninstall Previous Versions of PROSet II ======================================== Previous versions of the Intel(R) PROSet II utility do not support the Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN CardBus Adapter. If there is a version of the PROSet II configuration utility on your system that was installed for some other Intel product, uninstall that version before starting to install the Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN CardBus Adapter. Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, and remove any earlier versions of PROSet II. Disable Windows XP Wireless Configuration Feature ================================================= You cannot use both Intel(r) PROSet II and Windows XP wireless configuration features to set up your adapter. The adapter installation instructions provided for Windows XP in the online user guide include instructions on how to disable the Windows XP wireless configuration feature. It is recommended that the XP utility be disabled and that Intel(R) PROSet II be used to configure your wireless adapter. If the Windows XP feature is enabled and PROSet II is also loaded under Windows XP, the Windows XP feature overrides PROSet II. The PROSet II main screen displays the current status and signal strength information, but profiles in PROSet II are disabled and cannot be activated. Updating Drivers ================ To take advantage of the features in the Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN Software, update your driver. Drivers are available at the Dell support web site at http://www.support.dell.com. For information about updating drivers, see the Intel Pro/Wireless User's Guide. You can find this guide either on the CD or on the Dell support website. If you downloaded the software from the website, the guide is included in the files you downloaded. Known Limitations and Compatibility Notes ========================================= Adapter Not Inserted -------------------- Adapter Not Detected by PROSet II --------------------------------- When you close PROSet II after launching it from the system tray or Control Panel WITH THE ADAPTER INSTALLED BUT NOT INSERTED, you will be prompted to remove PROSet II. There is no need to remove PROSet II unless the adapter is not detected when it is both installed and inserted. In that case, it is recommended that the adapter driver and PROSet II be uninstalled and re- installed. See the Troubleshooting section in the online user guide for detailed instructions. Changing profiles may take up to two minutes -------------------------------------------- When you move from one profile to another, it may take up to two minutes for the adapter to connect to the network. Adapter Switching feature limitations -------------------------------------- The Adapter Switching feature in Intel PROSet II - requires DHCP. - only supports Intel wired and wireless adapters. - does not support VPN. - is primarily designed to maintain a connection to the network. It is not intended to handle an active data stream. It is recommended that you avoid switching adapters when an active data transfer is in progress. Help not available for Enable Profile checkbox in Intel PROSet II ----------------------------------------------------------------- In My WLAN Places, the Enable Profile setting in the Settings group does not have any help text. The text below explains how this feature works: "If this checkbox is checked, the driver scans the network for wireless connections. The driver stops scanning the network when it finds an enabled profile." TCP/IP settings for profiles ---------------------------- Currently, profile settings for the Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 5000 CardBus Adapter do not include the ability to define TCP/IP settings. All profiles for this adapter use the same TCP/IP settings defined in the TCP/IP properties for the adapter. Driver Installation under windows 2000 -------------------------------------- After installing the Intel PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN Adapter driver on Windows 2000, it may take up to two minutes for the adapter to confirm the wireless settings. Performing the Suspend/Resume function in Windows 2000 ------------------------------------------------------ When you are running Windows 2000 and use the Suspend/Resume feature, a message may display indicating that you need to close and open the Intel PRO/Wireless LAN application due to changes in the Device Manager. If this occurs, you must close Intel PROSet II and open the application again. Using Peer-to-Peer (Ad Hoc) mode -------------------------------- When you are running the Intel PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN CardBus Adapter in peer-to-peer mode, it is recommended that you specify a channel or group of channels to be used. The channels must be clear channels. In other words, the peer-to-peer clients should not use a channel being used by an access point servicing the same area. If there is a conflict with an access point channel, the peer-to-peer clients may fail to connect. Viewing the Ethernet address for an adapter ------------------------------------------- When you edit a profile in Intel PROSet II, you can use a locally administered Ethernet address by checking the Locally Administered Address checkbox. If you select this option and you view the Ethernet address from the General Tab in PROSet, an incorrect address displays. To view the correct address, go to a DOS prompt and type IPConfig/All. ================ Customer Support ================ - Main Dell web support site: http://www.support.dell.com - Network products information: http://www.dell.com - Worldwide access: Dell has technical support centers worldwide.
