********** Special Notes: Windows 2000 **********

1) Due to a change in the Windows friendly name from "Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet Controller" to "Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Controller" additional steps will be required when upgrading versions of the driver prior to 1.30 in Windows 2000.

Under My Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager -> Network Adapter

Double click on the adapter you would like to upgrade.

	Select - Driver tab
	Select - Update Driver button

The "Upgrade Device Driver Wizard" window should appear

	Click - Next
Select - Search for a suitable driver for my device
	Click - Next
Select - CD or Floppy depending on the media
Select - Install one of the other drivers
	Click - Next

The "Driver Files Found" window should appear

Select - Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Controller
	Click - Next
	Click - Finish

At this point the latest version of the driver will be installed.

2) Due to benchmark differences with different settings of Flowcontrol and TX Checksum Offload, the default settings of the base driver in Win2K need to be changed. The default setting for the W2K Broadcom driver is TX checksum offload enabled and flow control disabled. The optimal settings according to our benchmark tests are, flow control set to Auto and both TX and RX checksum offload enabled.

a) On the Desktop, right-click the My Computer icon and select the Properties option from the pop-up menu. The System Properties window displays.
b) Click the Hardware tab and then click Device Manager. The Device Manager window displays.
c) Scroll down the list of hardware devices to Network Adapters.
d) Click the plus (+) to the left of the icon to display the list of adapters currently configured.
e) Double-click the Gigabit Ethernet Adapter you want to configure. The Gigabit Ethernet Properties window displays, showing the General tab.
f) Click the Advanced tab. A window showing the list of configurable properties (and default values) for the adapter displays.
g) Change flow control to Auto and both TX and RX checksum offload to enabled.

********** Special Note: Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 **********

Dell’s Broadcom based integrated network interface connection on the Power Edge 2550 may have an older revision of controller firmware that may need to be updated as well as the Windows driver. Using the older version of firmware may cause the integrated NIC to malfunction under some conditions.

To check the firmware version, use the DOS based utility ‘b57util.exe’ provided with the driver and run ‘a:\b57util’, the firmware version is displayed in the second column of the output. Firmware versioning omits the leading zero following the decimal, so 1.2 is an earlier version than 1.12. If the version is earlier than 1.12, you should upgrade your firmware. To upgrade the firmware, use b57util and run ‘b57util -upgf x boot eeprom.bin’ where x is the device number of the integrated NIC you are upgrading firmware for. Further documentation for b57util.exe is included with the utility.

To ensure proper operation of the integrated NIC, ensure the latest driver and latest firmware are used. The driver version recommended for use with this updated firmware is Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Software Set 5.1 or later.

The updated firmware is available from <http://support.dell.com> .

********** Special Notes: NetWare 6.0 **********

Jumbo frames may not be supported on Netware 6.0.

********** Special Note: Windows .Net **********
