Overview

This is the Windows Millennium driver for the Conexant 56k PCI Red Owl modem, Gateway part numbers 6001260 and 6001681.


Identification

The Gateway Red Owl modem is identifiable, externally, at the rear of the computer, by the two jacks used for connecting a telephone line and an external phone.  The jacks are labeled with a telephone symbol for the phone jack and an outline of a phone jack in a green square for the line in from the wall phone jack.

Internally, the modem has a black plastic casing toward the back of the card.

Device Manager listings include PCI Modem Enumerator under HCFMODEMWDM, 56k PCI Voice Modem SF-1156IV R9A under Modem, and Wave Device for Voice Modem under Sound, video and game controllers.


Installation

You can download the driver from Gateway's ftp site:

If you have any problems downloading from Gateway's ftp site, you can also download file 7510495.exe from Gateway's Web site at the following address: http://www.gateway.com/support/product/drivers/modem/6001260.shtml

Download the file to the desktop, and then follow these steps: 

1.  On your screen, locate and double-click the 7510495.exe file. 

2.  In the WinZip Self-Extractor window, click Unzip to expand the files to folder C:\Drivers\7510495.  When complete, click OK, and then click Close. 

3.  Close all open programs. 

4.  From the Start menu, click Run.  On the Open line, type: C:\Drivers\7510495\Setup.exe, and then click OK. 

5.  An Updating Hardware Information Database window will be displayed, followed by three New Hardware Found windows for the PCI Modem Enumerator, the 56k PCI Voice Modem SF-1156IV R9A, and the Unimodem Half Duplex Wave Device.  When finished, the driver installation is complete. 

6.  From the Start menu, click Shut Down.  In the What do you want the computer to do? list, select Restart, and then click OK. 


Removal

1.  From the Start menu, point to Settings and then click Control Panel. 

2.  In Control Panel, double click the Add/Remove Programs icon. 

3.  On the Install/Uninstall tab, in the list of installed programs, click 56k PCI Voice Modem SF-1156IV R9A (Uninstall), and then click Add/Remove. 

4.  The 56k PCI Voice Modem SF-1156IV R9A (Uninstall) is removed from the list, signifying that the software removal is complete.  


Reason for Update

This driver update includes a utility to automatically remove any Conexant modem drivers that are currently installed when reinstalling the modem drivers, to ensure proper installation and functionality.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
