Migrate HD RedHat GRUB.txt Driver File Contents (T-FTS-02-RHD73.zip)

Hard Drive Migration under RedHat 7.2 and 7.3 using GRUB (Draft 1)

This document describes the procedure of migrating a hard disk drive from the motherboard controller to the Promise FastTrak RAID Controller, as it applies to a personal computer running RedHat Linux version 7.2 or 7.3 using the GRUB bootloader.

[Preparation]

1. Download the latest driver package from the Promise website
   (www.promise.com).

2. Obtain a new, formatted diskette and label it "FastTrak Driver Disk".

3. Extract the contents of the driver package onto your diskette. Use either
   WinZIP in Windows or
   Unzip in Linux to extract the files.

4. Have a Linux Boot disk from your original installation incase a mistake
   is made and you need to boot back into your original configuration.

[Driver Installation]

1. Boot your Linux system and login as root.

2. Insert your FastTrak Driver Disk into the floppy drive.

3. Open the console and type the following commands:

      # mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
      # cd /mnt/floppy
      # sh install-ft
      Answer Yes or No during setup configuration. Yes loads the FastTrak
      driver every time Linux boots.
      # sh setup-ft
      # cd ..
      # umount /dev/fd0

4. Move to the grub directory:

     # cd boot
     # cd grub

5. Type "cat grub.conf" (without quotes) to display the grub.conf file.
   The file will include the following:

     default=0
     timeout=0
     spashimage= (hd0,0) /grub/splash.xpm.gz
     title Red Hat Linux (2.4.7-10)
         root (hd0,0)
         kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.7-10 ro root=/dev/hda ide0=0x1f0, 0x3f6,14
     ide1=0x170, 0x376,15 ide2=0 ide3=0 ide4=0 ide5=0 ide6=0 ide7=0 ide0=0
     ide9=0
            initrd /initrd-2.4.7-10.ft

6. Type "vi grub.conf" (without the quotes) to edit the grub.conf file.
   Press the Insert key on your keyboard to start editing.
   Change the letter "h" to an "s" in the line shown below:

   before: kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.7-10 ro root=/dev/hda ide0=0x1f0, 0x3f6,14
   after:  kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.7-10 ro root=/dev/sda ide0=0x1f0, 0x3f6,14

7. Press the Esc key, then type ":wq" (without the quotes) to save the file
   and quit the vi editor.

8. Shut down your PC.

[Disk Drive Migration]

1. Disconnect the boot drive from the motherboard controller and connect
   it to the FastTrak RAID Controller.

2. Boot your PC. Early in the boot process, the FastTrak BIOS will appear.

3. Press Ctrl-F to open the Fast Build Utility. The Main Menu appears.
   Press the keyboard arrow keys to navigate the utility.

4. Select View/Define Array ... [ 2 ]. The Define Array Menu appears.

5. Highlight an Array number and press Enter to select it. The Define Array
   Definitions Menu appears.

   At this point in the process, we will make a temporary single-drive
   array using the disk drive with the FastTrak driver.

6. Create an Array 1, RAID Level 0, Total Drv 1, ignore Stripe Block and
   Gigabyte Boundary.

7. Select the channel with the attached drive and assign it to the Array.
   Press Ctrl-Y to Save.

8. Press Esc to exit.

9. Restart your PC. When the FastTrak BIOS appears, the array status should be
   functional. The system will continue booting.

[Verification]

1. When the FastTrak BIOS appears, the array status should be functional. The
   system will continue booting.

2. When booting is finished into the OS, open the console.

3. Type "cat /proc/partitions" in the console window. Examine the array
   information:

    major minor #blocks name rio rmerge rsect
      8      0      14668352    sda     4335    8911   102878
      8      1         48163    sda1      34     469     1006
      8      2       2040255    sda2    4290    8442   101850
      8      3        257040    sda3      11       0       22

   Under the name column, all partitions should be "sda". If so, the
   migration is successful.

   If the partitions show as "hda", the FastTrak driver did not load. Move
   the disk drive back to the motherboard connection and repeat the driver
   installation procedure.

[Mirror Existing Array]

If your objective is to Mirror your original drive, do the following:

1. Shut down the PC and install the new target drive. Connect the data cable
   to the FastTrak controller.

2. Boot the PC and open the FastBuild Utility.

3. Delete the existing Array. Note that deleting the array does not delete
   your data.

4. Create a new RAID 1 array including the new target drive. The data of
   the original drive will be duplicated onto the target drive.
