Overview
--------
This readme file contains information specific to the installation,
configuration, and operation of the Sonic Impact A3D product under 
Windows NT. For hardware installation and general information about
Sonic Impact A3D, please reference the readme.txt file in the root of
the installation CD or WEB-based download image.


The Sonic Impact s90 drivers included in this download are named 
Sonic Impact A3D to reflect the 2nd generation of the Original Sonic  
Impact Product line.  The Sonic Impact A3d drivers are based on the 
Aureal Vortex 1 chipset and drivers. 


Installing the Sonic Impact A3D Drivers
---------------------------------------
Before proceeding, please be sure you have installed the Sonic Impact 
A3D hardware into your system. See the readme.txt file in the root 
directory of the installation CD or WEB-based download image.

Since Windows NT4 does not support Plug-N-Play, you will need to install 
the drivers manually using the following steps:

   1. Click on Start->Settings->Control Panel.

   2. Double-click on the Multimedia icon, then select the Devices tab. 

   3. Click on the Add button, then select Unlisted or Updated Driver 
      from the list box. Click on OK. 

   4. You will now be prompted to insert or locate the vendor-provided 
      driver disk. Enter the path to WinNT directory on the Sonic Impact
      A3D installation CD-ROM or WEB-base image.

   5. A dialog box titled Add Unlisted or Updated Driver will appear.
      Make sure the Sonic Impact A3D driver is selected, then click OK.

   6. A dialog box titled "Aureal Vortex PCI Audio AU8820" will appear.
      Click on OK to continue.

   7. Once the drivers have been copied to your system, you will be 
      prompted to reboot. Do not reboot at this time. Instead, wait
      for the software utilities Setup program to complete. After Setup
      completes you may reboot your system.


Installing the Sonic Impact A3D Software Utilities
--------------------------------------------------
After the drivers are installed, the Sonic Impact A3D setup program will
start. Follow the on screen instructions to install the utility 
software. If the setup program does not automatically start, run 
Setup.exe from the root directory on the installation CD or download
image.


Removing the Sonic Impact A3D Drivers and Software
--------------------------------------------------
Use the following steps to remove the Sonic Impact A3D driver and 
software utilities:

   1. Click on Start->Programs->Sonic Impact A3D

   2. Select Sonic Impact A3D Uninstall

   3. Follow the on-screen instructions

   4. Click on Start->Settings->Control Panel

   5. Double-click on the Multimedia icon, then select the Devices tab.

   6. Under Audio Devices select the Sonic Impact A3D entry, then click
      on the Remove button.

   7. Follow the on-screen instructions, rebooting the system when 
      complete.


Tips and Other Useful Information
---------------------------------
1. If you have installed the MediaWorks98 utilities and are having 
   problems playing .avi files, you may need to install the latest
   ActiveMovie drivers. The file amov4ie.exe, located in the
   \ActMovie directory on the installation CD, will update your system
   with the latest necessary files.

2. It is recommended that Windows NT4 users update their system with the
   most recent Service Pack release.


Known Limitations
-----------------
The following are known limitations in this release:

1. The A3D positional audio feature is not supported under Windows NT4.
   This is because hardware acceleration is not currently implemented
   in the version of DirectX that is included with NT.

2. Direct Sound hardware mixing is not supported under Windows NT4. This
   is because this feature is not currently implemented in the version
   of DirectX that is included with NT.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
