You may also wish to remove the "HP DeskJet Utilities" program group from your Programs menu. =============================================================== 2. Problems With Specific Software Programs =============================================================== At the time HP's PrintSmart for Windows Printer Driver was released, the following known software program limitations existed: CStar 2.0+ Large Character Printing ----------------------------------- Chinese characters larger than 62 points in a document may not be printed out and sometime it may cause problem under the CStar 2.0+. To resolve this, double click on HPWCNFIG.EXE in the Windows system directory and turn off CStar Large Character. Corel Draw 5.0 (Corel) ---------------------- Scanned-in images are printed out as composite black pictures. To resolve this, double click on HPWCNFIG.EXE in the Windows system directory and turn off Jumbo Technology. Excel 4.0 (Microsoft) --------------------- After cancelling a print job, an error message may be displayed. Click OK to return to the software program. This is fixed in version 5.0. Some paths to the driver dialogs do not work correctly and settings are not retained. Use the following path to reach a printer setup that works: For version 4.0: File, Page Setup, Printer Setup, Setup For version 5.0: File, Page Setup, Options This is fixed in version 6.1. Documents formatted for printers other than HP DeskJet printers may shrink when printed. Changing print settings has no effect. This is fixed in version 5.0. Freelance 2.x (Lotus) --------------------- Doing a gradient fill pattern within a non-rectangular object (for example, a triangle) will print incorrectly. If you must do this, then disable "Rectangle Capability" from the HPWCNFIG.EXE program. HPWCNFIG.EXE is in the windows system directory. Pagemaker 5.0 (Adobe) --------------------- With the Print Manager turned off in Windows 95, or in Windows 3.1, if an error message appears during printing, then exit PageMaker after the print job is complete to correctly restore the display. Color pattern fills do not always print with the correct pattern. Some documents created in PageMaker 4.0 may not print correctly in PageMaker 5.0. PowerPoint 4.0 (Microsoft) -------------------------- Doing a gradient fill pattern within a non-rectangular object (for example, a triangle) will print incorrectly. If you must do this, then disable "Rectangle Capability" from the HPWCNFIG.EXE program. HPWCNFIG.EXE is in the windows system directory. PowerPoint 7.0 (Microsoft) -------------------------- Print jobs are not shown in the spooler. To cancel a job, go to the DeskJet Status Monitor. Printshop Deluxe 1.0 (Broderbund) --------------------------------- Objects that go outside the print region are clipped. The program does not provide a means of adjusting the bottom margin of the document to fit within the limits of the printer driver's margin settings. This problem is fixed in version 2.0. If a paper size other than Letter is selected in the printer driver when a document is sent to print, a message may display asking the user to select either Portrait or Landscape orientation. The selection has no effect on how the document is printed. Publisher 1.0 (Microsoft) ------------------------- You cannot change the HP's PrintSmart for Windows Printer Driver settings from Microsoft Publisher 1.0. You must change them through the Control Panel. If you are printing cards and images do not print, check the "MS Publisher" checkbox in the HPWCNFIG.EXE program. This program is located in the windows system directory. Publisher 2.0 (Microsoft) ------------------------- Information at the bottom of a page may be clipped. Increase the bottom margin of your page. See the user's guide for print region specifications. Word For Windows, Versions 6.0 and earlier (Microsoft) ------------------------------------------------------ Edges of italic characters may be clipped in version 2.0. This problem is fixed in version 6.0. If the 'copies' setting is changed in the ColorSmart dialog box for a document, the change will not happen for that print job, however, the change will happen when the next document is sent to print. This problem is fixed in version 6.1. When printing to a file, the path and filename must be shorter than 30 characters. Otherwise, the file that is created will be empty. WordPerfect 6.0 (Novell Corporation) ------------------------------------ WordPerfect reads the minimum print margins only when it is first started. These margins are determined by the paper size and orientation settings in the driver. If you are unable to set the margins to the minimum values for the printer, exit WordPerfect and make sure that the correct paper size and orientation settings are set in the driver through the Windows Control Panel. Then restart WordPerfect. This problem has been fixed in version 6.0a. Contact WordPerfect for upgrade information. Works 2.0A, 3.0, 3.1 (Microsoft) -------------------------------- Charts print incorrectly when the Automatic ColorSmart option is selected. Write 3.1 (Microsoft) --------------------- When printing envelopes, the left and right margins are switched with each other. If clipping occurs when printing envelopes, switch the left and right margin settings. ================================================================ 3. Formatting problems with print regions and margins ================================================================ The minimum top margin using the HP's PrintSmart for Windows Printer Driver is 1/3 inch. The bottom margin for the HP DeskJet 400 Printer is 2/3 inch. Note: The printable area on a page using the HP DeskJet printer software differs from the printable area allowed by DOS software programs. =============================================================== 4. Other Known Problems =============================================================== DOS Redirection in Windows 95 and Windows 3.1 --------------------------------------------- Redirection of DOS box printing is not supported by HP's PrintSmart driver. If you must use redirection of DOS box printing please ensure that HP's PrintSmart driver is not used at the same time. Point-n-Print Feature --------------------- The point-n-print feature will work the first time you use it after installing the driver but may get deactivated. It is recommended that you reboot the computer system at least once after installation for this feature to be fully implemented. Windows 95 Spooler ------------------ The default Spool data format is 'EMF'. If you select 'RAW', this is equivalent to disabling spooling. The HP's PrintSmart for Windows Printer Driver cannot spool RAW data. The page progress for print jobs shown in the spooler always indicates the current printing page as 0. However, the correct page number is displayed in the DeskJet Status Monitor, and the jobs will still print as normal. Windows 95 Image Color Matching (ICM) ----------------------------------- This feature is supported only if you are running Windows 95 applications. To make use of ICM in Win95 go to the printer setup dialog and select the ICM check box. All Win3.1 applications (running in Win95) does not make use of ICM. Windows for Workgroup Network Printing -------------------------------------- Sharing printers from a Windows for Workgroups machine is not supported. (This is NOT a network printer.) If you must do this, then ensure that the server machine is not being used for printing while network jobs are being sent to the printer. This limitation does not exist with Windows 95. Windows 95 Friendly Printer Names --------------------------------- To install more than one friendly printer name for a single printer, select Add Printer, and when asked to select a printer, click on 'HP. Then scroll to the bottom of the 'Printers' list to locate the printer. "Printer Port Problem" error message ------------------------------------ If a printer that is connected to FILE (instead of an LPT port) is selected from the DeskJet Status Monitor Printer menu, the message "Printer Port Problem" will appear. When this happens, the Status Monitor is attempting to communicate with the selected printer and is unsuccessful when the output is being sent to a file. Do not attempt to monitor the status of a print job that is being sent to a file. Multiple HP DeskJet printers on a port -------------------------------------- This version of the HP's PrintSmart driver for Windows does support multiple HP DeskJet printers on a port. =============================================================== 5.
