IBM LAN Server Installation Notes

 IBM LAN Server 4.0
 ------------------


 1.  Insert the disk labeled "DOS LAN Services Disk 1" into 
     drive A:.

 2.  At the A:\ prompt type "INSTALL" 

 3.  Choose the directory you want the software installed to.
     The default is "C:\NET".

 4.  A menu will appear that provides a list of  Network Cards.
     Choose "Network card not shown in the list below..." 

 5.  Remove the "DOS LAN Services Disk 1" diskette and insert
     LAN Installation Disk 2 into drive A.

 6.  Enter:
     A:\NDIS2\DOS and press Enter

 7.  The next menu should display "3Com LAN PC Card" 

 8.  Additional menus will appear, choose the appropriate options
     for your network environment. Refer to the IBM manual if 
     there are questions regarding these menus.

 9.  After completing the installation, copy A:\NDIS2\ELPC3.DOS 
     from LAN Installation Disk 2 to C:\NET or the directory
     chosen in Step 3. 

     A. Edit CONFIG.SYS and the following lines before rebooting.

        DEVICE=C:\NET\ELPC3.DOS
     
     B. To enable full duplex mode, edit c:\net\protocol.ini, 
        and add Full_duplex=yes below the [IBM$NETBEUI].

NOTE: Do not add this if your network is not configured to support
      Full Duplex.


LAN Installation Disk 2 also contains Ethernet driver import 
files for IBM LAN Server 3.0 and 2.0.


 IBM LAN Server 3.0
 ------------------

IBM LAN Server 3.0 contains an installer DOS (DXMAID).  The 
installation utility fully supports the OEM network adapter 
driver import capability.  The following section describes how
to install the driver for DOS.  


DOS

1.  Insert the LAN Support diskette into drive A:.

2.  Run the DXMAID installer from the IBM LAN Support diskette.  
    Use the defaults from the first menu.  The Process Adapter 
    Option Diskette box prompts you to enter the drive and path 
    for the option diskette.  

3.  Remove the LAN Support Program Installation diskette, 
    insert LAN Installation Disk 2 in the drive, and type:
    A:\NDIS2

    The installer pauses after it copies the files from 
    LAN Installation Disk 2 diskette.  

4.  Place the LAN Support diskette back in the drive, 
    and continue the installation.

 
IBM LAN Server 2.0
LAN Server 2.0 is not as sophisticated as LAN Server 3.0.  
Installation can be done successfully, but manual intervention 
is required.  In all cases, you are required to edit files.

DOS
Run the DXMAID installer from the LAN Support diskette.  Specify 
the Ethernet adapter installation from the menu.  When DXMAID is 
completed, do the following to complete the installation.

1.  Insert LAN Installation Disk 2 into the A: drive. Enter:

    COPY A:\NDIS2\ELPC3.DOS C:\LANMAN

2.  Enter the LANMAN subdirectory of your hard disk. Enter:

    CD LANMAN

3.  Rename the current PROTOCOL.INI file to save it. Enter:

    REN PROTOCOL.INI PROTOCOL.OLD

4.  Append the PROTOCOL.INI fragment from LAN Installation Disk 2. 
    Type:

    COPY PROTOCOL.OLD + A:\NDIS2\PROTOCOL.INI  PROTOCOL.INI

5.  Edit the new PROTOCOL.INI file.

    a. Four lines after the line [ETHERNET], change the line:

         Bindings = IBMAC

         to

         Bindings = ELPC3

    b. Two lines before the line:

         ;3C589 3Com Megahertz/PCMCIA adapter

       change the blank line to

         [ELPC3]

    c. Save the file and exit the editor.

6.  Return to the root directory of your hard disk.

7.  Edit the CONFIG.SYS file.

    a. Change the line:

         device = \LANMAN\PROTMAN.DOS

         to

         device = \LANMAN\PROTMAN.DOS /I:\LANMAN

     b. Change the line:

         device = XX.DOS

         to

         device = \LANSRV\ELPC3.DOS

     c. Save the file and exit the editor.

    The installation is complete.  The LAN Support program activates 
    the next time the notebook boots.


OS/2
This procedure describes how to install the NDIS driver 
for LAN Server 4.0.  These instructions work
for Warp 3 and Warp 4. OS/2 must already be installed on 
your computer.  To install the NDIS driver for the LAN PC Card, 
follow these steps:

1.  Open an OS/2 prompt.

2.  Insert the LAN Server MPTS (Multi-Protocol Transport 
    Services) Disk 1 in your diskette drive.  

3.  Make that drive your current drive.  Enter: 
    A: [Enter]

4.  Enter:
    Install [Enter]

5.  Select OK.

6.  Select Install.

7.  Select a target drive and then choose OK,
    The default drive is C.

8.  When prompted, remove Disk 1 and insert Disk 2.

9.  Select OK when the MPTS installation is complete.  

10. Select  Configure.

11. Select LAN Adapters and Protocols 
    and then choose Configure.

12. Select Other Adapters and then choose OK.

13. Insert LAN Installation Disk 2 in the 
    floppy drive and enter the drive letter and path to 
    the 3Com NDIS drivers.  For example, type:

    A:\NDIS2\OS2

14. Select OK.

15. Select 3Com LAN PC Card for OS/2 and then choose Add. 

16. Under Current Configuration, select 3Com 
    LAN PC Card for OS/2 and then choose 
    Edit. 

17. Enter the 12-digit address of your LAN PC Card 
    and then choose OK. 

    The address is found on the back of the 
    PC Card following the characters EA=.  
    Run the install.exe utility to find the address
    if you have the XJACK LAN PC Card.

18. Select the protocol(s) you will be using with 
    your network and then choose Add.  

19. Select your protocol(s) under Current 
    Configuration and then choose Edit.

20. Enter the 12-digit address of your 
    PC card and then choose OK.  

21. Select  OK. 

22. Select  Close.  

23. Select  Exit.  

24. Select Update CONFIG.SYS and choose Exit.  

25. Select OK.

26. Select Exit.

27. Quit OS/2 and reboot for the changes to take effect.

28. Follow the IBM instructions on installing 
    LAN Server to complete the installation.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
