To print this Readme file, choose the Print command usually found under the File menu. 1.2 OPERATING SYSTEMS AND ASSOCIATED SOFTWARE System requirements ------------------- The HP LaserJet 3100 product can function without installing the software, but certain functions will not be available unless the software is installed. If you have a computer, HP strongly recommends that you install the software. This provides you with the full functionality of the HP LaserJet 3100 product and is the easiest method for setting required features. Note: See the "Late-breaking news" section for more information on using and configuring the product in the Windows NT 4.0 operating system. Throughout this document, "Windows 3.1x" refers to Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11, and Windows for Workgroups 3.11. The JetSuite Pro (TM) software for Hewlett-Packard has the following minimum system requirements: * IBM PC (or 100% compatible) * a dedicated, bidirectional (IEEE-1284) or ECP-compliant parallel port * 30 MB (megabytes) or more of free hard disk space * a 4X CD-ROM drive (recommended for Windows 3.1x and 95; required for Windows NT 4.0) * Microsoft Windows 3.1x, Windows 95, or Windows NT 4.0 * MS-DOS (R) 6.20 or greater, if running Windows 3.1x * 486 DX33 or faster processor for Windows 3.1x and 95; Pentium (R) 90 MHz or faster processor for Windows NT 4.0 * 16 MB or more RAM (Windows 95 or 3.1x); 32 MB or more RAM (Windows NT 4.0) Note: Installing Service Pack 3 for Windows NT 4.0 is highly recommended. It is available to download from the Microsoft website at http://www.microsoft.com. The U.S.-retail (SE) version includes a business graphic and template program called By Design Office Limited (by Streetwise). The U.S.- commercial (XI) version includes CardIRIS LE by IRIS. The CardIRIS LE and By Design Office Limited software runs on the following operating systems: * Microsoft Windows 3.1x * Microsoft Windows 95 * Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 The CardIRIS LE software and the By Design Office Limited software are not installed automatically. The installation instructions are located on the CD-ROM jackets and are provided later in this document. CardIRIS LE software by IRIS CardIris LE software by IRIS allows you to create an electronic text and image address book using your business cards, scanner, and OCR software. The OCR software processes the cards and then places them in a database for sorting and searching. This software is TWAIN-compliant, and an upgrade option is available. It has the following minimum system requirements: * 4 MB or more of free hard disk space * a CD-ROM drive for installation By Design Office Limited software by Streetwise The By Design Office Limited software allows you to access business graphics and templates. It includes a library of business documents including invoices, memos, purchase orders, and more. You can also access By Design Online for a dynamic library of additional business templates. It is compatible with Microsoft Office, WordPerfect Suite, and Corel Quattro Pro and Presentations. An upgrade option is available. It has the following minimum system requirements: * 16 MB or more of free hard disk space * SVGA video card and driver * a CD-ROM drive for installation and use ******************** 2. HINTS AND ISSUES ******************** 2.1 HINTS Caution: Do not modify the contents of the Jetsuite.ini file. Doing so might cause the JetSuite Pro software, and possibly Windows, to become unstable. Do not uninstall the Win32s files prior to running the JetSuite Pro software uninstall option for Windows 3.1x. Successful uninstallation depends on the availability of these files. ------------------------------------------------ If you already have a PC fax or scanning program ------------------------------------------------ JetSuite PC Fax ---------------- The JetSuite Pro software that came with the HP LaserJet 3100 product includes a PC fax program. HP recommends using the included JetSuite PC Fax program because it is designed to work with the HP LaserJet 3100 product. However, you can continue using the PC fax program you already have if it is listed in the "Supported third-party programs" section. If you want to use the JetSuite PC Fax program, change the setup for the other PC fax program so that it does not answer incoming calls, or uninstall it. You cannot have both programs trying to answer fax calls on the same line. If you want to continue using your PC fax program, see the "Supported third-party programs" section for a list of PC fax programs that have been tested for compatibility with the HP LaserJet 3100 product. Scanning -------- The HP LaserJet 3100 product comes with a scanning software. You can also use other TWAIN-compliant scanning software. 2.2 INSTALLATION ISSUES Issue: You receive the following message while attempting to install the software: "An Unknown System Exists. Remove before installing JetSuite." Solution: In the case of an incomplete JetSuite Pro software installation, the file "X:\Windows\Jetsuite.ini" might have been written. This file must be removed before attempting another JetSuite Pro software installation. Issue: You receive the following message: "Setup has determined that you do not have enough disk space on the selected drive. Please reduce the set of install components or change the install drive." Cause: The JetSuite Pro software requires at least 30 MB of available disk space to be installed. After you select the JetSuite Pro software and data directories, the installation program checks to make sure that your computer has enough available disk space. Solution: Check the amount of disk space available. If space is sufficient, run a disk defragmenter program. Otherwise, delete unnecessary files or archive older data to floppy disks or another medium. As a workaround, quit all open programs, and then try reinstalling. Issue: You receive the following message: "JetSuite Fax has detected that the HP LaserJet 3100 is either switched off or is not connected to your computer." Cause A: The parallel cable is loose or not directly connected, or the parallel port does not match the specifications listed in the "System requirements" section. Solution A: Make sure the parallel cable between the computer and the HP LaserJet 3100 product is directly and securely connected. Also, make sure that the parallel port matches the specifications in the "System requirements" section. Cause B: The power cord is loose or the power source is not working properly. Solution B: Make sure the power cord is securely plugged into the power source and into the HP LaserJet 3100 product. Also, make sure that the power source is receiving power. Cause C: The parallel cable may be faulty. Solution C: If you have another size-C parallel cable, try attaching it to the HP LaserJet 3100 product. If you do not have another cable, see the "Technical assistance and support information" section for information on ordering a cable from HP. Issue: You receive the following message: "There are not enough free COM ports on this system. You must have at least two available COM ports to install this software." Cause: The software needs at least two COM ports. At least two COM ports are not available. Generally, this is only an issue in Windows 3.1x and 95. Windows NT 4.0 has a large virtual COM port limit. Solution: Free one or two COM ports by eliminating devices or adding more COM ports to your computer. Issue: The software did not install (Windows 95 or NT 4.0). Cause: All programs except Systray and Explorer should be closed. Solution: Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to check for open programs. If there are other open programs, click one of them, and then click End Task. Repeat this step for each open program, and then reinstall the software. Issue: The computer cannot read the installation CD-ROM or floppy disks. Cause A: The correct drive may not have been specified. Solution A: Check for the proper disk drive letter. Often, the drive letter is D or E for the CD-ROM drive or A or B for the floppy disk drive. Cause B: The CD-ROM or floppy disks may be damaged. Solution B: Copy the CD-ROM or disk directories to the hard disk. Then install from the hard disk. Issue: You have installed the JetSuite software, but your Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software does not recognize documents in your language. Cause: The JetSuite software uses the Windows international setting for selecting the language it installs. However, the JetSuite Pro software only supports Dutch, English, French, and German, so for any setting other than those it installs English. Solution: The IRIS OCR software language installed matches the JetSuite Pro software language. The default dictionary for the OCR software is either Dutch, English, French, or German. The IRIS OCR software supports more languages in addition to those four. To set another dictionary as the default do the following: 1. Double-click the IRIS OCR icon on the toolbar. 2. Select a language in the Language drop-down menu. 3. Click File. 4. Click Set Default Settings. 5. Click OK to save the language as the default. 2.3 COMMUNICATION PORT ISSUES Issue: The computer cannot determine if a COM port is available (Windows 95 only). Solution: Use the Control Panel's Modem Diagnostics tool to determine COM port availability. To use the Modem Diagnostics tool: 1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click the Modems icon and click the Diagnostics tab. The COM ports detected are listed. If a modem or a mouse is attached to a COM port, it is listed next to that port. Issue: There is a conflict when attempting to use the parallel port (Windows 95 only). Cause: Windows 95, by default, does not keep track of interrupt requests (IRQs) for unidirectional or bidirectional parallel ports. Windows 95 might configure another device (most often a sound card) to use the IRQ of the LPT port. Solution: Manually assign an IRQ to the LPT port: 1. Double-click the System icon in Control Panel. 2. Click the Device Manager tab. 3. Click the + next to Ports (COM & LPT). 4. Click Printer Port (LPT1). 5. Click Properties. 6. Click the Resources tab. 7. Ensure the Use Automatic Settings checkbox is cleared. 8. Click Basic Configuration 1. 9. Click Interrupt Request in the Resources Type Area. 10. Click Change Setting. 11. Change the value to 7 (if using LPT2, use 5). If a conflict with another device is reported, resolve it by changing the configuration of the conflicting device. 12. Click OK twice. 13. A dialog box appears with the message indicating that Windows must be shut down. Click Yes. 14. Restart the computer. Issue: When you attempt to scan an image, the mouse locks up. Until then the mouse works fine. Cause: A COM port input/output (I/O) address might be in conflict. Solution: 1. Open an MS-DOS window and run MSD (Microsoft Diagnostics). Note: When running MSD on NT 4.0, a warning appears: "An application has attempted to directly access the hard disk, which cannot be supported. This may cause the application to function incorrectly. <Terminate> <Ignore>" Choose <Ignore> and proceed. 2. Open the COM port section. You should see a chart similar to the following. (Your chart might differ due to your computer configuration.) COM1 COM2 COM3 ------ ------ ------ Port Address 03f8 02f8 03e8 Baud Rate 7200 1200 2400 Parity None None None Data Bits 8 8 8 Stop Bits 1 1 1 Carrier Detect No No No Ring Indicator No No No Data Set Ready No No No Clear To Send No Yes No UART 8250 16550 16550 According to the chart, 3 COM ports are available: COM1, COM2, and COM3. In some cases, Windows might report a different set of COM ports (for example COM1, COM2, and COM4). In this example, the COM4 port uses the COM3 address. If this occurs when the JetSuite Pro software is installed, it configures the COM port as COM4 and uses the COM3 address. This requires that IRQ sharing be enabled. To enable IRQ sharing, add the line "COMXIRQ=-1" to the C:\Windows\System.ini file, where X is the COM port number. 2.4 SOFTWARE ISSUES Issue: Cannot acquire a scanned image in PhotoPaint 7.0. Cause: The "Scanner Transfer mode" might be set to "Buffered". Solution: Change the "Scanner Transfer mode" to "Memory". Issue: Cannot use Eudora Pro 3.0 with the JetSuite Pro software. Cause: Eudora might not be set to use MAPI. Solution: Set Eudora Pro 3.0 to use a MAPI server. To do this: 1. Click Tools, and then click Options. 2. Select the MAPI icon. 3. Select Always Use Eudora MAPI Server. 4. Click OK. Issue: The Document Assistant appears on top of the screen saver. Cause: In Windows 3.1x, if the HP LaserJet 3100 Status program (JetStat) is running, the screen saver does not function. Solution: Disable the JetStat program. Keep in mind that the JetStat program must be running to control the HP LaserJet 3100 product from your computer. To disable the JetStat program: 1. Right-click the JetStat icon found in the lower portion of your Windows screen. 2. Click Exit JetStat. Note: To restart JetStat, select "HP LaserJet 3100 Status" from the "HP LaserJet 3100 JetSuite Pro" program group. Issue: Some of the tools are hidden on the JetSuite Pro Desktop toolbar. Cause: The JetSuite Pro Desktop toolbar has a fixed size and does not have a scroll bar. Therefore, there might be programs on the toolbar that cannot be displayed. Solution: Reduce the number of programs on the toolbar: 1. With your cursor over the toolbar, right-click. This brings up the Toolbar Customization window. 2. Remove programs from the toolbar by removing the checkmark in the checkbox. To remove checkmarks, click the box next to the program. 3. Click OK. Issue: The default printer is set to the HP LaserJet 3100 product even though another printer is set as the default in Windows. Cause: The default printer in the JetSuite Pro Desktop is always set to the HP LaserJet 3100 product regardless of the default setting in Windows. Solution: You can print to another printer by selecting it from the Name drop-down list in the Print dialog box. Issue: A General Protection Fault (GPF) occurs when printing Micrografx Designer 4.0 documents. Cause: Micrografx Designer 4.0 and HP LaserJet 3100 drivers are incompatible. Solution: Download and install the following Micrografx patch: http://www.micrografx.com/mgxftp/Ds40a.zip. Issue: After loading a document in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) and clicking Preview in the JetSuite PC Send Fax dialog box, the following message appears: "C:\JetSuite\Fax\10000000.jsd This file was not found." When you click OK, the fax job is canceled. Cause: All of the paper pages to be faxed are loaded in the ADF, and are not yet scanned into memory. As a result, the JetSuite Pro software cannot display a preview of these pages. Solution: Use the Preview feature only when you are sending a fax job that includes electronic pages. Issue: I receive an error message when trying to Print to Email from within a program. Cause: 32-bit programs do not properly link to email. Solution: First, Print to File from the program: Note: The following process might vary between different programs. Please refer to the help resources of your programs, if necessary. 1. Select JetSuite Document Capture as the printer. 2. Go into the Printer Property Sheet for the JetSuite Document Capture. 3. Verify the output is set to Print to File. 4. Print the document. HINT: If prompted for a filename, save it into the JetSuite\doc folder for easy viewing later. Second, drag the document onto the E-mail button in the JetSuite Pro Desktop: 1. Open the JetSuite Pro Desktop. 2. Select the document. 3. Click the E-mail icon on the toolbar. Issue: Nothing happens when I click the Properties icon in the Print window with JetSuite Fax selected as the printer. -Or- I receive a "Could not display the printer properties. You may need to reinstall this printer" message when clicking the Setup icon in the Details tab of the Printer Properties window. Cause: Windows is missing some general printer files. Solution: Install any Windows printer by doing the following: 1. Click Start, click Settings, and then click Printers. 2. Double-click the Add Printer icon. 3. Follow the instructions, selecting any printer when prompted. ************************************ 3.
