32 ScanMan Conflict Found
32 ----------------------
32
32 The ScanMan settings under Windows uses DMA Channel 1.
32 Because the SoundBlaster compatibility requires to use DMA 1,
32 there will be a conflict with ScanMan.
32
32 The next time you want to use ScanMan:
32
32 Please run the ScanMan driver Setup to change the DMA from 1 to 3.
32
32 For more information on how to do that,
32 please consult your ScanMan User's Manual.
33 The ScanMan driver should use another DMA than 1 for the SoundBlaster
33 compatibility to work. We will change it to DMA 3 as follows:
34 Help: ScanMan DMA Move
34
34 A ScanMan driver was found in the CONFIG.SYS file, and it uses DMA 1.
34
34 Since the SoundBlaster compatibility needs to use DMA 1,
34 it will be necessary to change the DMA for ScanMan from 1 to 3.
34
34 You may do these changes by yourself at another time, but
34 please be aware that the DMA conflict will prevent ScanMan from
34 working properly (it will just not read the images any more).
35 Press [Esc] to enter a new directory name.
35
35 Press [Enter] to continue with this directory.
35
35 Press [F3] to exit.
36 Changes to System Files
36
36 The following files are being changed.
36 A back-up copy is made as explained for each one:
36
37 Help: CONFIG.SYS Modification
37
37 The CONFIG.SYS file is modified to contain the statement
37 to call the SoundMan driver. The driver is used to retain the
37 default volume and implement the volume control hot keys:
37
37 Ctrl-Alt-U (volume UP)
37 Ctrl-Alt-D (volume DOWN)
37 Ctrl-Alt-M (MUTE)
37
37 If you are concerned about the memory space occupied by the driver,
37 please note that it can be loaded HIGH (using DEVICEHIGH) under DOS 5.0.
37 Otherwise, there is the possibility of inserting the "/U" option in
37 the line, so that it will unload itself after setting up the board.
37 Please note that in that case, the volume control hot keys will no longer
37 be accessible.

39 game software. Please note also that you may have to call some
39 specific setup or installation program to get sound out of games
39 you already have installed on your computer.
39
39 At this time, the computer should reboot to activate the changes
39 in the CONFIG.SYS file. You can do this by selecting the Reboot
39 option in the menu.

60 SoundMan Board Settings Screen
61 Help: SoundMan Settings
61
61 The SoundMan board has many options that are pre-configured
61 for you. It is usually not necessary to change these options.
61
61 If you wish to change any option, use the [Up] and [Down]
61 cursor keys to move the highlight to the option to change.
61 Then use the [Enter] key to access the selection menu for
61 that value. Follow the instructions and recommendations
61 for the menu. Use the [F1] key to obtain more information
61 about the particular value to change.
61
61 Once the highlight is on "Continue", use the [Enter] key to
61 test the board (follow instructions). If a problem should
61 occur during the test, use the [Esc] key to return to the
61 Settings Screen.
62 SoundMan DMA
62
62 Select a DMA Channel value.
62 We recommend to use a high value (5,6,7) for 16-bit operation.
62
62 Make sure that you are not selecting a DMA Channel that is already
62 used by another board. For example, if you have an Adaptec SCSI board
62 in your machine, you must avoid using the same DMA to avoid conflicts!
63 Help: SoundMan DMA
63
63 The DMA Channel is used to play and record digital audio
63 (sound that gets encoded numerically), which is often
63 used in Windows to produce sound effects and for voice annotation.
63
63 Conflicts may occur with other devices using the same DMA channel
63 at the same time. A typical example would be when a scanner is
63 used and some sound is played. For that reason, it is a good
63 idea to select a DMA channel that does not conflict with other
63 boards in the computer.
63
63 For example, if you have an Adaptec SCSI board using DMA 5,
63 select another one for SoundMan DMA: 7 may avoid any conflict.
63
63 It is recommended to select 5 or 7, as they guarantee 16-bit
63 operation, and are the ones found available most often.
64 SoundMan IRQ
64
64 Select an IRQ value.
65 Help: SoundMan IRQ
65
65 The IRQ is used in conjunction with the DMA channel to play
65 and record digital audio (sound that gets encoded numerically),
65 which is often used in Windows to produce sound effects and for
65 voice annotation.
65
65 The IRQ value should not conflict with the ones used by other
65 devices at the same time. It is also better not to use the
65 same IRQ as the SoundBlaster IRQ.
65
65 Since the SoundMan IRQ value can be set to higher values
65 not usually available to other boards, we recommend to use
65 one of 10, 11, 12, or 15.
66 Joystick Port
66
66 If you wish to use a joystick and connect it to the SoundMan board,
66 select "Enabled". Select "Disabled" if you already have a joystick
66 connected to another game port.
67 Help: Joystick
67
67 A joystick may be used with game software. The joystick
67 should be connected to a game port or to the joystick port
67 of SoundMan. The SoundMan joystick port can be
67 disabled if not needed.
67
67 If your computer already has a game port and a joystick
67 attached to it, you may disable the SoundMan joystick port.
67
67 Conflicts do not occur between the joystick port and other devices.
68 SoundBlaster Compatibility
68
68 Select "Enabled" to use SoundMan for software under DOS.
68 Most games and other software require SoundBlaster compatibility.
69 Help: SoundBlaster Compatibility
69
69 The SoundMan is fully SoundBlaster compatible, but
69 that feature can be enabled and disabled by this installation.
69
69 When the computer is started, the SMG.SYS driver will
69 insure SoundBlaster compatibility if enabled by this installation.
69
69 Notice that SoundBlaster compatibility is required by a
69 majority of game software.
70 SoundBlaster I/O Port
70
70 Select the SoundBlaster IO Port.
70 Notice that most games and other software default to 220.
71 Help: SoundBlaster IO Port
71
71 The IO Port for the SoundBlaster is used by games and other software
71 to communicate with the SoundBlaster. It is usually set to 220,
71 and some software may not even consider other values.
71
71 You may find that there the 220 value conflicts with other
71 boards in your computer. In that case, you may change the
71 value to 230 or 240. But beware that this may mean that
71 you would have to obtain a specific sound driver from a
71 game software developer.
72 SoundBlaster IRQ
72
72 Select an IRQ value for SoundBlaster compatibility.
73 Help: SoundBlaster IRQ
73
73 The IRQ for the SoundBlaster is used by games and other software
73 especially when playing and recording digital audio (sound that
73 gets encoded numerically), which is often used in games to
73 produce sound effects and voices.
73
73 Conflicts may occur with other devices that are used at the same
73 time as sound. For example, the mouse driver uses an IRQ to
73 read from the mouse and keep track of it. That IRQ could conflict
73 with the SoundBlaster IRQ while playing a game. Here are typical
73 conflicts that can occur:
73
73 IRQ 2: Cascades to other IRQs (8-15)
73 IRQ 3: Same as COM2 serial port (mouse, modem)
73 IRQ 5: ScanMan, Bus Mouse
73 IRQ 7: Printer port (LPT1), but usually shareable
74 SoundBlaster DMA
74
74 Select a DMA Channel value for SoundBlaster compatibility.
74 Notice that many games and other software assume that "1"
74 is the default DMA Channel and may not allow it to be changed.
75 Help: SoundBlaster DMA
75
75 The DMA Channel for the SoundBlaster is used to play and record
75 digital audio (sound that gets encoded numerically), which is often
75 used in games to produce sound effects and voices.
75
75 Many games that use the SoundBlaster assume that the DMA Channel
75 is fixed to 1. So it is not recommended to change that value.
75
75 Conflicts may occur with other boards in your computer.
75 For example a scanner board, such as the Logitech ScanMan,
75 may use DMA 1 by default.
75
75 If you have such a board, we recommend to change its
75 DMA value to 3.

76 MPU-401 is used ONLY IF YOU HAVE AN EXTERNAL MIDI DEVICE.
76
76 If you do not have an external MIDI device, select "Disabled".
76
76 If you enable the MPU-401 interface, make sure there is no conflict
76 between its IO Port setting and another device in your computer.
77 Help: MPU-401
77
77 The MPU-401 compatibility port is provided as a service to users
77 who have an external MIDI device connected to the MIDI/Joystick
77 port on the SoundMan board.
77
77 The MIDI device can be connected to the MIDI/Joystick port
77 through a MIDI-Mate adapter box only.
77
77 If you own a MIDI device and MIDI-Mate adapter box, you should
77 enable the MPU-401 emulation and set its IRQ and IO Port.
77 Notice that the defaults provided are often assumed by
77 the MIDI software using the MPU-401.
77 It is very unlikely that you will have to change these settings.
77
77 Note: The MPU-401 compatibility is limited to the UART mode.
77 The MPU-401 Intelligent (or Smart) Mode is not supported.
78 MPU-401 IO Port
78
78 Select the MPU-401 IO Port.
78
78 Make sure that your choice does not conflict with another board
78 in the computer. For example, the Adaptec SCSI board has a
78 default IO Port address at 330, and you should not select that
78 value for MPU-401.
79 Help: MPU-401 IO Port
79
79 The MPU-401 IO Port should be changed only if there is a conflict
79 and if the MIDI software recognizes the new value. There are only
79 two possible values, and the default is often assumed by the
79 MIDI software.
79
79 However, we have found that an Adaptec SCSI board has a default
79 IO Port address at 330. If the MPU-401 IO Port were set at the
79 same value, a serious conflict would occur.
79 Make sure it is not the case in your computer.
80 MPU-401 IRQ
80
80 Select the MPU-401 IRQ value.
80 Notice that software using the MPU-401 may require to use "2".
81 Help: MPU-401 IRQ
81
81 The MPU-401 IRQ should be changed only if there is a conflict
81 and if the MIDI software recognizes the new value.
81 IRQ 2 is often assumed by the MIDI software.

83 Volume Level Help
83
83 The default volume level of 50 has been found to be adequate for
83 non-powered speakers and headphones that are usually connected to
83 portable CD players and cassette players.
83
83 A lower volume level like 10 or 25 would be adequate with battery-
83 powered speakers, or for connection to a home stereo receiver.
83
83 A higher volume level like 75 or 90 may be required for direct
83 connection to speakers requiring more power.

139 Potential Conflict with ADAPTEC SCSI
139
139 An Adaptec SCSI board has been found in your system.
139 Usually, the default DMA channel for it is 5.
139 Make sure that you know the Adaptec SCSI board's DMA channel,
139 to avoid any conflict with the SoundMan DMA channel.
139
139 Although we try to avoid using the same value for SoundMan DMA,
139 you are the only one to know that the jumper on the Adaptec board
139 is set to another value for the DMA channel.
139
139 If the SoundMan DMA and the Adaptec SCSI DMA are the same, a conflict
139 will occur and it could damage the file system on a SCSI hard drive!
