This document describes the steps required to properly install the Windows 98 Second Edition HSF Generic Modem driver, which accompany this document. Please understand that the modem drivers you will be installing are intended for basic modem operations and are generally not supported.

I.  Extracting the generic modem driver.

  1.  Download the Win98SE HSF Generic Driver from the website (www.conexant.com).
  2.  To extract the driver double clicking on the HSF_Win98SE.exe file and pointed the your C:\ drive.

**Note:  It is recommended that you take note of the exact location of the extracted files, as you will be required to use this information during the installation process.
	 On how to download the generic modem drivers please read the document "Instructions on How to Download Generic Drivers".

III.   Instructions for Windows 98 Second edition.

  i.   Uninstall and install the generic modem drivers with HXFSetup.exe.
   
    1.  Go to the folder where the modem driver is located, C:\HSF_Win98SE, and double click on the HXFSetup.exe file.
    2.  By clicking on the HXFSetup.exe, you will be uninstalling the current installed modem driver and installing the HSF generic modem driver that was downloaded from the Conexant website.
    3.  If during the installation process, the "Add New Hardware Wizard" pops up which indicates that you need to direct it to the drivers.
    4.  Click on Next, then select "Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended)" and click Next.
    5.  To direct windows to the drivers select "Specify a location" and go the folder where the drivers are located, C:\HSF_Win98SE.
    6.	The next window will say "Windows driver file search for the device: Generic PCI Modem Enumerator", click Next and then Finish.
    7.  Next pop up wimdow, "This wizard searches for new drivers for: Generic SoftK56 PCI Modem", click Next and then repeat step 5 and 6.
    8.  The next window will say ""Windows driver file search for the device: Generic SoftK56 Data Fax", click Next and then Finish.
    9.  Allow a few seconds for the installation process and then click on Finish when ready.

IV.  Testing your modem

   1. Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel and open the modem control panel "Phone and Modem" options in ME & 2K.
      -WIN98SE  Highlight the modem in the list, then click on the More Info button. Windows will communicate with the modem and return the results. If this test is successful then your modem is working and is ready to be used.
      -WINME/2K  Click on the modems tab, then click on the Properties button. Next select the diagnostics tab and click on the Query Modem button. Windows will communicate with the modem and return the results. If this test is successful then your modem is working and is ready to be used.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
